Sometimes, but they're so easy to fake its usually age card or passport.

Seriously, get an age card, so many dont for some unfathomable reason, its the best €10 I've ever spent.

    +1

the amount of people I know who have lost/damaged their passports... age cards are easy to replace and easy to clean if you accidentally spill drink on them or drop them into a puddle :D

    unlike passports :/

Do they accept provisional licenses as ID in Dublin?

I moonlight as a bouncer and we reluctantly accept provisional licences, but not everywhere does. You're better off just getting an age card.

What exactly do you say to the Tutor though? Just like go up and say hi? And do they have an office or something so you can find them easily?
What kind of things do they help with?

They're well used to people meeting them at the start of term, so they know the drill. All you have to say is that you were told it's a good idea to meet your tutor and chances are they'll just tell you about what they do and ask you about your course. It's not a big deal.

If you buy a 'freshers week band', do they check ID in the clubs that night?

Yes. All clubs have the right to refuse entry if you are without a Garda ID

I just went in said hi and he told me that I will never see him again unless I start failing exams or I have problems in college. Since that day I haven't met the chap again! :P

We didn't have Facebook in my day. We had to meet people the old-fashioned way! Kids these days, etc.

Ah feck it, I'm so old I can't even summon enthusiasm for a "kids these days" rant.

    WHAT HAVE I BECOME

I remember when Trinity was all fields.

they've changed it drastically since I got one last year... could take anything from a week to a month

back last year it took 3 months :/

Dropped off the forms at the Garda Station today, after waiting about 3 days for the forms to be sent to me, was assured I'd have it by Freshers. My mate's came after about 3 working days, but some seem to get slightly lost in transit.

It really varies, mates have waited 6 months, mine got held up in a backlog when the system changed over 2 years ago, others younger than me got them in two weeks. Usually its quick enough now though I hear.

When my friends were all getting them (about this time last year if not a bit before), the cards seemed to all come at once every month or so no matter when you applied. I think they make them in batches

Yeah, how do people manage this one? Really don't fancy going to a club on my own hoping to meet new people there... :o What have other people done before?

You usually meet people in the sports clubs and societies. Also, if you're in an arts or science course the Student2Student Peer Support Network will likely organise something, even if it is a pile of wánk.

Gone out on my own. Stand in front square and talk to the least attractive person in sight, and organise to go out with them. When you make more attractive friends, leave them!

The best way of making friends in a science-type course like dentistry is in and through lab groups and project groups.

I know that in Engineering we had a project to do in 1st year which involved a lot of out of college time to complete it. Made good friends through that.

Like I said to others... Join 1 or 2 societies and leave it at that! In my first year I joined like 10 and didn't actively partake in any of them. If you join 1 or 2 you will be able to make good friends that way.

Wait, so if you're under eighteen there's no point getting that wristband? Just go home early? Great, only Freshers week and already getting left out of everything -.-

There are plenty of events run by societies that don't involve going out drinking, and plenty more that serve "refreshments" without much regard to the age of the students in question.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a second round of offers for Trinity Halls in sept but you gotta mail them to be sure. Are you from Ireland or elsewhere, if you're from outside Ireland it doesn't make sense for them to reject you.

I totally get what you mean, but I assume most loners like myself will go with people they've just met through freshers. (:

So if I haven't got a garda age card thing be when the clubbing on fresher's week starts, what else can I use in place of my passport? I've got a student card from my country, would that work?

Nope. Bring your passport until you get an age card.

I just applied for the age card today and it's only €10. Give them 3 days to send out the relevant forms and then get them all signed at the local Garda Station with passport photo etc. Then it only takes 10 days to process your application and send you the card. So, all in all, it takes only about 2 weeks to recieve...just in time for freshers week! ;)

Lads, this is university, everyone meets people. Join something and contribute regularly. You'd have to try very, very hard to not make friends in uni. Introduce yourselves to people in clubs and societies, and you'll be fine, as long as you don't kick someone square in the grapes or offer to show them your severed hand collection.
