    Club Kildare Update

The Executive Committee of Club Kildare met last night to consider recent developements.

All members of the Committee, other than the County Treasurer, have given notice that they will neither seek nor accept nomination to serve on the Executive after the Club's AGM on 6th February next.

    A sorry state of affairs.

    A sorry state of affairs.
the indo paraphrases the press release and adds the following background on the story:
<snip>The departure of the officers now puts the future of Club Kildare very much in doubt. They were known to be very supportive of previous manager Kieran McGeeney and, as an official of a sub-committee of the Kildare County Board since late 2012, Mangan was adamant he was entitled to a vote - which he didn't get - on the night McGeeney was removed.

Club Kildare have been one of the most active supporters' clubs in the GAA. In 2013 they generated €90,000, while, over the past number of years, they have brought in up to €130,000 for team preparations.

During negotiations with Croke Park over funding in 2012, they agreed to become a sub-committee of the Kildare County Board.

Their main officers were highly influential in securing the most recent sponsorship deal with Brady's Ham and are understood to be unhappy with some of the board's handling of other commercial and fundraising ventures.

Back in October Club Kildare wanted to hold a testimonial match in Newbridge for Dermot Earley and Ronan Sweeney (similar to what they had for Anthony Rainbow which was a roaring success) on the same weekend as the annual race day in Naas. The County Board wouldn't facilitate it.

Dermot Reilly was also sent to Croke Park to negotiate the deal to move the two home league fixtures to Croke Park last year. When he arrived, he was told that the County Board had already agreed to the matter in writing.

Farcical carry on and I can understand Pat Mangan's and Dermot Reilly's frustration.

Centre half back remains a problem area, it will be interesting to see how Bolton does. Overall the team is taking shape nicely and there are a few to try come back in like Ollie Lyons, Peter Kelly, Eoin Doyle, Niall Kelly, Padraig O'Neill and possibly Johnny Doyle.
Donnellan in goals is not as good as Connolly but he deserves game time.
As long as Meath don't give Kildare a hammering in this I'll be content enough.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

I think Eoin Doyle is the best option for centre back if he can manage to stay injury free for more than ten minutes!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,231 ✭✭✭BNMC

Don't get the reasoning behind starting Donnellan ahead of the clearly better keeper Connolly. Sentiment should not come into it, especially in a final.

It will be interesting to see how the likes of Fogarty and Mulhall get on against much stronger opposition.

I'd give the no 6 to chalky when darly flynn is back in midfield. I dont think bolton is strong enough for cb while chalky would take the head of any lad.
should be an interesting game for sure and id say we should be winning it or id take a point or two of a loss but with mayo the following week it be nice to keep the pace going and stick it up to the royals....

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

I think Chalky is better at midfield than in the half backs but it could be a move that is forced if Eoin Doyle isn't fit.

Had a bit of a laugh this evening, some fella is after putting a kildare flag up on the bridge in newbridge. Or maybe its a peace flag for all the moorefield and sarsfield stuff claiming the bridge in October.

Lets hope the flag is still there come September! !

    Kildare 1-10 Meath 0-9

Well done to all. Always nice to win silverware. Conditions were awful, making for a poor enough game. Paul Cribbin was outstanding as was Mulhall and Murnaghan.

Mayo up next in the first round of the league next Sunday in Newbridge.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Nice to see some of the new players standing out. Murnaghan got on a lot of ball and Mulhall was sharp. I had my doubts about whether he would take his chance but so far so good. Mick O'Grady did a lot of things right and should improve as he gets more experience.

Cribbin was excellent and Mick Foley had a good second half after a few ropey moments in the first. Mayo will be another step up again and Kildare will have to improve on their performance today.

Two Mile House (Kildare) 0-13 Emyvale (Monaghan) 2-6

Conditions weren't conducive to a free flowing match, but Meath had so many chances to drag themselves back into that game that they didn't take. Even Stephen Bray was fluffing his lines.

Good day for the county two mile house producing and kildare seniors held meath off.

Far too much hand passing from Kildare. Forwards reluctant to shoot.

I am always saying that tbh... kildare leave themselves open to losing posession by hand passing all the time rather than being more direct

To be fair to the players yesterday, the conditions will dictate the gameplan. It was blowing a gale yesterday and the pitch was very heavy after all the rain recently. They aren't ideal conditions to be kicking the ball. That sort of wind makes accurate kick passing very difficult and you have to be very precise with your kick passes on that heavy ground because the ball won't hop off the turf in front of your full forward line like it will in June or July.

Hand passing is fine when it's done at pace and you have players creating overlaps. Kildare managed to do that a few times yesterday. Moolick's goal was the result of an excellent attack with the ball worked all the way up the field by hand at pace. Mulhall had another great chance that brought a good block out of the Meath keeper. Fogarty and Brophy could have been put through one on one only for the final pass to go awry. Kildare managed to get Cribbin free up the stand sideline on a number of occasions during the second half with some clever interchange.

The problem occurs when the short passing is done casually, laterally and the players are not running onto the ball at pace. That was the case for a lot of the game yesterday but it's only January so it's forgivable. A lot of hard physical training being done at the moment and not a whole lot of ball work. You'd hope that they will be a lot sharper further down the line. Kildare were kicking the leather off the ball for the past few years trying to land everything on top of Tomás Connor and our forward play suffered as a result.

Yeah not being direct enough and being afraid to shoot is pretty much the exact opposite of things I would have said were wrong with the Kildare set up over the last four or five years.

Hey klairon, but kildare play year round handpassing rather than attempt any other route... thats why we got slammed by the dubs as dublin move the ball beautifully and are like tigers chasing the ball down kildare look sluggish and awkward handpassing all the time it all comes down to options kildare could and should play the kicking game more

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,206 ✭✭✭✭DARK-KNIGHT

Really not looking forward to playing dublin this year especially after our last few attempts apart obviously from last years obyrne cup win

I disagree. Kildare have kicked the ball more than most counties over the past few years. O'Connor on the edge of the square was central to this. It had mixed results but in most big games against better teams it failed.

Kildare have the players to mix up their approach a bit more. Our half backs aren't great kickers and I think that's a lot of the reason why McGeeney was so desperate to find a place for Mikey Conway. Gary White's return will help because his distribution is generally very good. Paudie O'Neill is another who can supply good direct ball into the forward line when he returns.

What Kildare have is an abundance of strong direct runners who can take on their opponents. Cribbin is the best of these. Bolton, Hurley, O'Flaherty, Hyland, Lyons, McGrillen and Eoin Doyle are also very good runners from deep. Quick hand passing and interchange can see these players thrive.

That's not to say we shouldn't kick the ball either. We've two inside forwards in Brophy and Fogarty who are well able to win their own 50/50 ball and kick scores. If we can mix up the approach a bit more, I think we will improve on the last two years.

Do you watch Kildare play at all DK?

If anything we weren't doing enough hand passing, instead we were giving long hail mary balls into TOC or Brophy. This tactic doesn't work against the big boys as they are a lot cuter and funnel players back around the target man. The first half of our game against the Dubs in the championship was a perfect example of this.

I've always felt we are at our best when we are running at teams at pace, remember 1998? I think Pat Spillane once said we were the best basketball team in Ireland.
