I have a large chunk of money invested in Prize Bonds. I used to have a few wins but now the returns are dismal. So much so that I will be getting a form from the Post Office next week and I intend to cash in half of them.

€50 for me today from the same bunch that won €100 last week. Looking through the prizes there seems to be more than usual doubles and triples this week. Two examples. The CM bonds would be 20 years old.

Prize Value Winning Prize Bond Location

    €50 CM904714 Dublin
    €50 CM904718 Dublin

    €50 ZS294620 Wexford

You can download the form: https://www.statesavings.ie/media/pdf/prizebonds_repayment_form

The full repayment instructions are here:
    https://www.statesavings.ie/help-support/help-articles/withdrawal-request-repayments

Last time I requested a repayment I specified that it was to be paid directly to my bank account and I had the money within 7 days. For security purposes I sent the repayment request (with the bonds enclosed) by registered post.

Almost 1.4 million new bonds issued in a week. From the serial numbers of the reinvested bonds I got from the last two draws.

Nothing for me today, but today's €1,000,000 winner gives me hope, it was an AW series bond, my 100 bonds that I purchased between 1985 and 1990 are AF AG AH AI AJ AK AL AM AN series, today's 1 milion winner probably purchased the bond early or mid 1990s, over 20 years old, because I do wonder about these old 2 letter bonds, bonds only been held for a short period 3 letter bonds and winning the top prize seems to happen more often, then again 3 bonds today purchased in 1957 won €50euro, the owners could well be gone to their eternal reward, somebody has posted today's 1 million winner purchased bond in 1994

Nothing for us this week. Seriously thinking of cashing in and buying an apartment as an investment.

Confirmation that the bond was from 1994. I knew that from other bonds, but these press releases go out for every draw. You can see the date of €50K winners if you Google. I noticed that a €1 million winner in 2010 was from 1981.

Hold on to those old bonds, they have a slightly better chance of winning than ones bought in Euros. But don't get your hopes up too much. There is someone with bonds worth over €4 million, and I never saw them winning a prize over €75.

I posted before about how many bonds have been issued since 1957. I estimate that about half of them have been issued in the last 7 years, so newer bonds win more often. But every bond has exactly the same chance, regardless of age (with the proviso about bonds bought with IR£).

    Great post

Some of the posters here who, I suspect, are “buy and hold” people may not realise that the churn rate on prize bonds is quite high. I know a number of people (mainly self employed) who buy substantial quantities of prize bonds between Jan and Sept each year as money comes in and encash the lot in November to pay the taxman. I have done this on a number of occasions in the past and would still be doing it if it weren't for the holding limit. This contributes to the preponderance of recently issued bonds going into a draw. This in turn gives rise to the conspiracy theories that new bonds have a better chance of winning .......

I have a £5 bond issued in 1957 which is a treasured possession. It was a gift to my mother and father at the time of their wedding. It’s a quaint but imposing document, with the name and address of the holders typed (probably on a Remington cloth ribbon typewriter). Issued by the Bank of Ireland, who were bankers to the Government of Ireland at the time. Now if only the bloody thing would win, sixty years later !

Home from holiday yesterday, and €50 waiting for me.

That was very thoughtful of you, buying a prize bond for your mother and father as a gift for their wedding day.
