I think I broke my toe, am in agony.

Had Til at the vet yesterday for her vaccinations and the vet said she has luxating patella :-( Anything I can give her supplement wise that might help?

One of my housemates dogs has a luxating patella; was so bad he was falling several times a day. We were told it would be 3000euro to fix it which might not work. The other option was to try glucosamine tablets. He's 60kg so gets 3 of the human glucosamine tablets (3.85e in dunnes) a day, hasn't fallen since and that was twelve months ago.

    €3000????:eek::eek::eek::eek:
Berluddy hell! I know these things are more expensive for big dogs, though this particular condition is more common in smallies.. but €3000???:eek:
I talked to a lady yesterday who told me she'd paid €1500 for her dog to have this surgery on one knee, and I was still :eek::eek:
I know a number of vets who do this relatively straightforward surgery for around about €600-€800, but my own vet does it for significantly less again, and she's an orthopaedic specialist!
Tilly, I don't know what you can do to make your poor toe better (I'd suggest several vodkas), but whilst I'm not at all convinced that any supplements or additives can really help with a luxating patella, sure give them a go (chondroitin/glucosamine: I'd feed it in the form of fish, bones and all). You never know, perhaps Rommie's example is a common example. But to the best of my knowledge, it's one of those things that eventually needs to be attended to surgically.

Hence why she opted not to go for the surgery :P:P Crazy money. This was from a vet that we no longer use though because they've got nothing but money on their minds so it could probably be done for far less somewhere else. The glucosamine really has made a huge difference though

Isn't there different grades to it and different ways of correcting it - so possibly the 3k was the most complicated method? To give an idea Bailey's ops were €1700 and €1500 - similar to tplo where a wedge was cut out, bones realigned and held together with a plate and pins. He stayed down there for a few days before and after the first OP and they used a different plate that time so there was a price difference. Second time we dropped him in, bummed around Mahon Point all day and collected him that evening lol!
I supplement with 2 joint supplements (Luposan pellets and Flexicose) and he doesn't need any pain killers. I took him off the Flexicose thinking I could double the other one and save money but he was showing signs of being sore after a week - back to normal after a few days when I put him back on it.
When I was made redundant in may the only thing I splashed out on with my payment was a years supply of Flexicose lol!! :p

Me and Cream both have gingivitis! Well, I do for sure and I've diagnosed Cream myself but he's coming to the vets with me on Tuesday to get sorted. At least we have each other for moral support :pac:

my cat's operation for luxating patella cost 500, that was 2 years ago. Wasn't a success, but I believe dogs have a much higher success rate. At least you can restrict dogs from jumping more easily. I hope it's just mild.
Same cat now having disc problems, which is exceedingly rare in cats - mine seems to be the unluckiest cat in ireland:( No answers on my disc disease thread, which is good really - I wouldn't wish it on anyone else's pet.
But how do you decide when to give up on your pet, and stop trying to fix her? I'm agonising here, I don't know whether enough is enough now.

I faced something similar with our Minnie before Christmas. I eventually made the last decision on the day she was physically unable to get out of bed in spite of being on 3 different pain killers. The next level of pain relief was skin patches and would have meant keeping her away from the other dogs :( that was not an option!
From a quality of life perspective it was the only choice I could make :(
I had spent months trying to fix her but every time we sorted something, something else cropped up.

It's heart breaking having to make that decision, had to do it myself a couple of times, and like above it's quality of life. You know your pet better than anyone, you know when it's time. The first time I had to make the decision I was 16 and so was my dog, but I knew when he looked at me, he'd had enough.

Think it's getting near the time to spay Mouse, think she was born mid August as we rescued her mid September, she was just about able to eat but hard to since she was almost dead, not sure if that was age or lack of strength. Better go chat to vet.

:mad: A young EBT came trotting over to us earlier this evening - 10-12 dogs off lead playing. All of a sudden dogs are being called back to their owners in fear- and who did all the barking and growling? A Labrador and other collie/shep/lab (don't know) cross - barking in his face and he just stood there wagging his tail.

"Would he attack the other dogs"
"Well who did all the barking and growling!?"

    GAAAAAAAAAH!!! :mad::mad:

When people announce that the "Pit bull" ie staffy who's walked in our park should be muzzled and on it's lead I happily start listing all the dogs in the park who are clearly crosses of RB's and would technically need to be muzzled and put on a lead too lol!
It drives me MAD!! I'd need a muzzle if I had a bully in my area - to stop me giving out!! ! :p:pac::pac:

It's really funny with staffies/bullies, in the vet they never do a bit of harm! When giving an injection to a yorkie she was snapping and screaming but doing a skin scrape on a staffie (considerably more painful) she just lid there wagging her little tail off!

Some wee chap came over kicking Lola and I said dont do that shes your friend, so he petted her instead.

Here comes the mother im reporting you im reporting you!!

    wtf

Had a similar experience with millie a while back. We were out for a walk in the park and decided to let her off for a run. She saw two kids over by the goal ando decided to waddle over to get them to throw her ball for her. All of a sudden the dad came out screaming at his kids to get over to his side. I went over and told them that shes a nice dog and wont bite. Asked the if they wanted to pet her (which they seemed keen on) but then the father went on to spout rubbish about how he was going to call the warden on me. He scared the kids and I bet now theyll never want to go near dogs for the rest of their lives.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,021 ✭✭✭✭tk123

Our park is the same most of the time - you either have parents screaming at the kids or the kids left to run over to the dogs and we end up minding the dogs and the kids!! The odd time somebody will come over and tell them to ask nicely if they can pet the dogs - a toddler came over to us all yesterday with his grandad and was telling the grandad to pet the big dogs with him lol!!!

Aw I remember little man having his skin scrapes and he hated it. He just looked at me like I was not doing my job letting that happen and tried to snuggle into me. Poor baby. It's not at all nice. He still has a little mark on his head from his last one and it was over a year ago. :(

Cordelia spends a lot of time out of her viv, when I at home I give her the freedom of the house. Anyway I had her in her viv today to make sure she got the benefit if the UV light. However, from the corner of my eye I seen her jump from a log to bang the door open. It looks like she might have worked out her own way of geeting out when she wants!!!

Hey does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy dog coats for big dogs? Is zooplus best place to buy from?

We have the Grizzly one from zooplus and I find it brilliant. It seems to be a copy of the Hurrta ones but much much cheaper! It's made really well and covers his tummy which is where he'd be most mucky! Bailey's in the photos for it lol!!

How do people find the prices here? I have brought live food off them in the past, and they are significantly dearer than places I use now.

I find them too expensive most of the time and usually leave empty handed!! I always price check on zooplus first before I buy anything - I don't mind paying and extra euro or two to have something now instead of waiting for the post but some of the prices are crazy! A chew I wanted one time for example was 1.99 on zooplus and 6.99 in there. Another time I bought a bag of food to try - it was €17 more expensive. Obviously on-line prices will be cheaper but PetMania and PetStop would be cheaper than them and frankly not in your face trying to push their food etc so we usually go there instead.

Yeah, I was initally paying 3:95 for a tub of locus whereas down the road in PetCo I now get them for 2:50. I had to buy some lighting which is expensive there last week, but it cost me over 70e.

he looks so happy with himself! What size did you get? Nala's 28" long but she's slim so i don't know if that size would be swimming on her.

I have cream in the vets with me for the day today, poor baba is so sad but at least I'm here to dote on him :D

    Creams in jail!

I got the second biggest and the measurement was spot on. Delighted with it! Normally they don't fit properly because he's not a fatty retriever so it can be hard to get stuff that fits his chest and back! You don't see the fur on the collar unless you have it folded down btw ;)

Cream just pooped in the bath because the door to the utility where their tray is was closed. At least he want somewhere easy to clean!

I always put Cordelia in the bath to do the same, she seems to perfer to go in bath. Gives her a bit of a swim and a clean at the same time.

Though sometimes she doesn't make the bath and would go in the viv, though I think she dislikes that.

I clipped Drake and Cloud's wings with my flatmate's help two days ago but they could still fly.

Came home kinda drunk and decided to clip more off the young one's wings. Cloud was no problem, caught him, trimmed his feathers and stuck him back into the cage. Caught Drake then and clipped his feathers, he took it badly, started crying out and Yellow and Cloud were anxious for him. Held him in my hand for a while trying to show him that I'm not mean and bad. Stuck him back into the cage and the cutest thing ever happened. Yellow walked over to him and started to preen him, to tell him he was ok, and Cloud came up the other side and they both comforted him. Budgies are awesome!

Millies starting to sit like a person. Really weird. Kinda like this but not as set up.
Trying to get a photo of her when she does it but can never get the camera in time.

    A bit like this?

Benson does it too, loves sitting up like a person until a human sits down and then he hugs in beside them.
