Forgot to mention that my daughter competed at the National Champs on Sunday in the Javelin (500g) and although she had been throwing between 24-27m all year and not really enjoying it she once again popped up with a 3m pb to break the 30m barrier and win a Bronze medal.

She always performs much better at Nationals I think that's 12 events she has competed in and she has produced 11 pb's.

She is ranked 3rd in the Hammer (3kg 42.73m) about 2m off the 2nd ranked athlete (44m+) but 9m off the number 1 ranked athlete (51m+) so realistically a Silver/Bronze there.

Ranked 6th in the Shot (3kg 10.70m) but only 50cm separate the 3rd - 6th ranked athletes so anything could happen there.

My Daughter was little below her best with a 39.60m in the 3kg hammer (only 2 turns) just 14 cm of the silver and again off the pace in the shot 10.21m 50cm of the bronze at the national champs a few weeks ago.

we are hoping to get 1 more javelin and hammer comp in at the end of August before taking a good 3 or 4 weeks off before the training begins all over again.

She has achieved nearly all of her targets for the year, medal at the Irish schools, medalled at the UK sportshall Champs, 30m for the Javelin.
All that is but 1 the 45m throw in the hammer 3kg so 1 more chance to achieve this at the end of the month, hope to have mastered the 3 turns by then.

LJ your daughter may have to consider dropping a couple of those disciplines as she gets a little older. It's fine while she's beating most other athletes in all four but the time will come where - with other non-athletic pressures coming to bear - she needs to concentrate on those she is best at/enjoys.

A lot will probably depend on which training groups and coaches are available. It's not great fun training on your own outdoors during an Irish winter :(

    Keep us informed.

Yes we have discuss this this year as her javelin was not going well and she didn't seem to be enjoying it.

Would like her to continue with the shot even for the indoor period as it's a long winter without competition.

However she is still only 14 and will let her go another year till she has to specialise

You mentioned Sportshall - I guess you're involved with the Donegal team? Certainly here in Jersey we have found Sportshall to be a lifesaver in the early winter months, and we always take U13 teams over to the UK for the regional champs in January.

We have not-so-fond memories of trying to keep our youngest ones training outdoors during the bleak weather.

And of course you've got the 'indoor' comps there, though even in Dublin they tend to happen mainly outside :P One year at Santry we rocked up to the indoor champs to find the hall had been booked by the Irish bobsleigh squad :pac:

Yes I was one of the managers this year for the Donegal team, Naoimh has won a bronze medal the last 2 years and is still u-15 by UKA rules next year so hoping she can make it a treble.

Yeah sportshall is a welcome distraction to the constant training

The standard of javelin and shot putt in underage in Ireland is increasing at a huge rate we have at the moment various young throwers throwing at international standard for instance our recent u13 girls javelin throwers would be ranked in the top 3 on Europe , our under 12 girls turbo javelin again ranked in the top ten in Europe , our girls shot putters under 13 and 14 throwing in excess of 14 meters huge throws by any standard we are moving forward and setting new standards we just need to keep improving

    The bump reminded me

If you are an athletics coach in Dublin and interested in becoming a javelin coach, there is a new programme. Bart Rogers is going to coach a group of coaches over a six month period. Each coach will be trained, and expected to coach a couple of athletes from their club to the graded meets.

    PM me for details

Great stuff. I'd love to see something like this for the horizontal jumps.
