    Keystone cops race yesterday.

After two controls Zoran was gone and clear, easily 3 or 4 minutes ahead. I opted to contour around Stony Top he went higher, our paths crossed with Zoran maybe 10 seconds ahead but he then pulled away to control 3, we left it together after he'd had a bit of standing still map consultation.

Not quite hare and tortoise but he was running faster, climbing things that didn't really need climbing eventually ending up above me at the river which was our next control. I was 50m closer to the control so led into that one. Next one was a bitch, plenty of forest sh*te to hack through. I told him I was going to take a risk on finding a forest ride, I think the feeling was two sets of eyes are better than one. Anyway we didn't find it and had to do some extra climbing but it worked out ok-ish. He blasted down Carrigshouck to the military road, then stopped for more stationary map consultation. 30 or so second later I got down to him and we went into the next crap forest together, again looking for a forest ride. This time we found it and he ran on opening up another big gap as I was cramping up calves and hamstrings like the couch potato I am.

Last control was tricky but i got it and began the pain march to the finish. Opted for a longer route that minimized bog time as I had to get onto a road, the cramping was killing me on the uneven ground. I could see the finish when Zoran came flying into view from my left, he'd messed up the last control finding it after I had, then took the direct route. I tried to respond but legs point blank refused, cramping up savagely and my fairytale comeback disappeared into a cloud of impolite language. Still happy for Zoran.

A real feel good kind of day that the lunatic fringe of IMRA specialises in.

The race points system loves distance and climb and laughs at speed and intensity.
I did both IMRA races available to leinster heads this weekend, had a great time at both in their very different ways and relative to the winner probably performed equally well both days, ie 108% Saturday and 110% Sunday. My race points though are 98.7 and 189.9...
Very happy for both Barry and Zoran, both men were pushed hard by quality opposition and in the trial 4 men finishing within 50 seconds and all ahead of the previous record bodes well for the team at the worlds.

Zoran had a great race, stuck to his guns including the non navigator thing of stationary route choice, something I also indulge in :) I was much happier stopping, working out my line to the next one and in the mist I really enjoyed the keeping the thumb on where I thought I was, the mist lifting and the actual reality of where I am aiming for is never a pleasant surprise so more nav practice is required for me.
The nav race will stay in the memory banks longer but that is probably to do with the novelty of it all as the trial race was the hardest race I've done this year. My calves are still tight from it..
Kudos to both Gerry Brady and Philip Brennan too, soldering on putting in huge manhours and time and imagination for less than 20 entrants really shows a huge love for their sport.

I agree, its kinder to people that can go for longer.
But the intensity bit I have to disagree with.
The hardest race I've run all year was a nav race - build your confidence on nav and you'll be able to go full gas... going full gas in heather makes you realise of all these small muscles you never knew you had!
The hard packed trails of the trial aren't exactly kind to the legs.

Fair duce Zoran on the Nav series win.
Spread the word on how fun they are. The more runners taking different route choices the more fun it is - it adds the beautiful dimension of who has the best skill at taking clean lines in terrain.

(and barry on his 100th race, 28th race win and Worlds selection... not that that was ever really in doubt ;) )

From Philip B on Stone Cross to Lug
Just a reminder that today is the last day for entry for the Lug Relay. So far I have four teams entered (Setanta, CNOC, Boards & DFO) which is a pretty poor show indeed. Where are the rest of ye???

If I don't get at least half a dozen teams entered I see no point in running the event with such poor support. It is a great race & really should take place but we need more teams so come on, get out there & put your teams together.

I wonder if a club ran Stone Cross and it gave them a guaranteed entry to the WWR, would that get more clubs running it...

    Probably not actually

I wonder what's happened to the orienteers this year. Setanta last year had 2 teams running under the Setanta banner with Setanta members on other teams, Ajax had a team, GEN had a team, CNOC had 3 teams. Not every one of them is at WOC. I know the likes of the Cooley Thriller, Gaelforce and the 10 mile in the Park(yuck) draw people away but still...

I appear to be the only CNOC member not at WOC or WOC Tour.
One of my team members is been flown home for the relay.

    Nice idea.

    Where are...

    Crusaders?
    Rathfarnham?
    UCD?
    Ajax?
    GEN?

Maybe a move to the busier Spring would see more teams entering, it seems as if many runners have moved their attention from the hills at this stage of the year.

    Crusaders?
    Rathfarnham?
    UCD?
    Ajax?
    GEN?

Only GEN and Ajax of those five have any interest in a mountain navigation relay at club level.
At the individual level there are many other races on which have more appeal to the average runner.
If the conditions for the wicklow round are perceived to be at their best in May/June then this race could be held in May or June?

  • Registered Users Posts: 930 ✭✭✭jeffontour

It's a shame to see this in doubt. I'm partially at fault for not racing but I've other things to do Saturday morning which have taken priority.

I'm not sure if encouraging clubs to enter is really a solution as we're all aware the nav errors that happen on the WWR. Imagine the problems we could end up with on open mountain, unmarked courses with under prepared runners?

I think it's down to the core IMRA membership to support this in conjunction with the orienteering posse.

A move to March/April may be good as a nice kick start to the season for those with no love for the winter league but wanting a good season opener with the enhanced atmosphere a team relay brings.

Vegetation was never a major issue on the Stone Cross route, the real challenge was the bog. I remember recceing it one year in July and nearly drowning in the stuff and having nearly dry bog when I actually raced it a month or so later so you can't really predict when the best conditions are going to be, it's heavily rainfall dependent. In any case, everyone's in the same boat in that they're racing it on the same day (unless you ask for a really early start) whereas the Round is a time trial where you get to pick your dates so it makes sense to go for the most favourable date possible.

Any fellows here doing Gaelforce this weekend - I will be near to the finish area with my massage table and pretending to look like I know what I am doing.

In relation to the World Trials - I will one day get over my demons of going downhill...one day...

    Stone X relay cancelled. :(

IMRA can get 150+ turning up for a Wed night trail run (with 130m climb!), but no more than 4 teams entered in a tough mountain relay?

PS Well done earlyevening on a podium finish last night! (in case my above post seems like I'm denigrating the trail race- I'm not!):D

Much as I like the trail league I struggle to see where it fits in with IMRA. Give me an all out hill race any day. Last nights race was a sprint :) Scarcely a bump of a climb. And whats this with downhill starts :)

The lug relay scheduling probably was the main cause for the lack of support. In previous year's the numbers weren't significant either but there wasn't the same clashes with other events.

If there was 15 people that were potentially ready for a relay there is nothing to stop those people putting together their own run, of say leg 1 end to end as a social race. It would be a shame for nothing to happen particularly if people had made arrangements to be there for the relay which included foreign travel. I'd put myself forward to help if there was an appetite.

It seems to suit some people though (like me).
Equally I'm sure some people like the trails and are put off by the thought of the Nav Challenge or the Championship races. Keep 'em - I like variety and they're a nice finish to the season.

What would be the best time of year to run the relay to avoid contention, maximise teams etc?

I enjoyed yesterday evening as much as any race in LL ot TL so far, probably a combination of the lack of a steep climb and the weather which it's fair to say is a cop out on the spirit of the mountain running ethos :pac:.

I do think it is a good way to introduce people to the IMRA though and I wish now I had started with the TL and learned a bit about mountain/trail running from there.

I think the Trail League is a great part of the IMRA calendar. It compliments a different type of running ability to the Leinster League and for that reason a chance of placing is way more realistic for alot of people than in the LL.Pure speed and athletic fitness generally wins over technique! For me, very few of the LL races are completely runnable, from start to finish, whereas the trail runs are and that makes them fast and enjoyable.
Personally I would prefer the LL overall because I think the mountains are more fun, but the trail league is a great introduction to IMRA for people who may be too intimadated to start off with an open mountain,or just to get a break from road running.
Never understand why some of the regular top performers in the LL don't bother with the Trail League...is it cause they know they will be under more pressure ;):p

To be a top performer you need to train. People can't be taking 10 months out of their training schedule to do every single race on the IMRA calendar. You'll notice that many of the top runners in the Trail league don't come out of the woodwork until that point in the season.

Vicious headwind on the boardwalk on leg 2 this morning. Glad it was today and not last Saturday or Pablo T would have had difficulties.

Encountered a closed gate around the river between Knockree and Crone. Posted a note on the IMRA forum for Joe to see. Anyone else come across this closed recently?
It's private land, the gates are meant to always be closed. If you want to cross, you have to ask permission from the landowners. The only permissable route is along the wicklow way path at the correct entrances and exits.

    (its vaguely IMRA related)

The gate I encountered was on the wicklow way path
However, when we ran the Wicklow way subsequently that gate wasn't sealed.

Along the river is along the Wicklow Way. Are you saying the "landowners" have extended their territory to the Wicklow Way now?

How do you know it isn't their land? Much of the Wicklow Way is on private land and we aren't automatically granted rights of passage.
It's a shame that the actions of a few, impact the interests of so many.

Congratulations to all who made the team for the Worlds in Albania but most especially my clubmate Brian Furey, Irish Champion 2011 and now also achieving a place on the international stage with a gutsy run in the trial race, he's mixing it with some top lads in Rathfarnham in training and improving year on year in the hills as a result.
I had a very good view of the race and some very good runners suffered with the short sharp shock of the gully climb but Brian kept strong and kept plugging away to finish within the required 105% (tighter then the 110% of before, fado, fado.... :D )of the winner to give himself every chance of selection.

It can be done the hard way!

PeterX - my own downfall is not the uphill section of the world trials but the downhill. But, congrats to Brian for getting selected.
