MET Eireann is also showing a similar cold front arriving in conjunction with the north west warm front at mid day on friday. Things might be looking up.

MT Craniums forcast this morning said this about friday "FRIDAY ... intervals of sleet, snow and (in the southwest inland mainly) freezing rain will develop during the morning and spread sporadically north and east during the day. Some snowfalls of 3-7 cms possible especially north central inland counties, higher parts of Mayo-Galway, and some eastern counties. Freezing rain risk likely to spread to some south central and inland southeast locations. West and south coast especially outer headlands may become milder for a while with low cloud, mist and drizzly rain as temperatures there rise to 5 C, but most other locations will stay near freezing and will be struggling to reach even +2 C"

with this rain moving in later tonight, whats the chances of snow in meath, we've had about 6-7 inches in north meath already, and the roads are a mess

Probably very high chance at this moment in time. I wouldn't be surprised if most places saw something

I think anything could happen to be honest hence the generality of Met Eireann's forecast for tomorrow. I would imagine here in the SE it will fall as rain.

So it is a sit tight and see kinda event. If it is hitting us in the morning will there be still enough cold to turn it to snow, or is it the fact that the upper air mass is warm enough that it will fall as rain, and the lower air mass is cold enough to turn it to freezing rain.

How bad would you expect the freezing rain to be?

yeah i just heard on local radio we could get anything from about 7-10 cm, the roads are just about passable here, if we get that amount, we'll be in trouble

Could this be the epic ending before the rise to the tropical temps of 4C - 5C???

if you go into the meteoalarm site, and click on ireland, then click on one of the red regions, this is the text you see:

    http://www.meteoalarm.eu/index2.php?country=IE&day=0&lang=

Very icy overnight and tomorrow. Further heavy snow showers also, mainly in the esat of the country."

inputted by met eireann and a complete over exageration to have it as red. pure drama to attract more unwanted attention to this debt ridden country run by a pack of muppets!;)

    Now...more snow please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've heard that the precipitation will fall as rain on the west and north coasts before turning to snow overland and i've also heard that the precip will do the reverse and fall as snow in the west north and midlands and turn to rain over the east and south.

Met eireann mention no rain just sleet and snow which is unusual. I'm expecting rain tbh but with so much snow cover and the freezing temps you never know. Would be a nice surprise (which all the good snowfalls are ;))

Oh and nice big flakes here in wexford town this morning which was a surprise.

Id say mainly for the midlands and the east... the main reason ther putting it out is for a decent snow amount to fall on already frozen conditions.

Hope nobody gets rain out of it tough !

Whats the possibility of the air becoming very unstable as the milder air hits the cold. Could there be thunder and lightening?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,335 ✭✭✭naughto

we had a power cut in castlebar half the town was out,so they sent it us home from college cos it was freezing with no heat.nothing to do now put press the f5 button all day:D:D:D

so latest guidance suggests snow for many at first(even parts of the west away from the coast) but sadly the snow eventually turns back to rain in most places, except for the northeast and north midlands.

then unfortunately as the front clears we get crappy rain and sleet showers on Friday afternoon in the west and northwest. it would seem freezing rain is going to be a problem for some places.
the bottom line is don't drive on Friday unless you really, really have to.

    Issued at 02 December 2010 - 12:54
    Severe Weather Warning
Snow showers will continue in eastern counties until early Thursday night, giving further accumulations of 3 to 8 centimetres. Severe or very severe ground frost will then set in countrywide and ice will persist on untreated surfaces.

A band of precipitation, spreading southeastwards across the country later Thursday night and Friday morning, will fall as snow in many areas before clearing southeastern counties early Friday afternoon. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres will occur in many areas, with mountainous regions recording a further 10 to 15 centimetres. Wintry showers will follow in the north and west, some falling as snow; widespread sharp to severe ground frost will set in Friday evening, resulting in ice formation on untreated surfaces.

Valid until 20:00 hours Friday 3rd December 2010.

Early this morning somebody posted a link of ATC live feed to say an emergency helicopter had been dispatched.

Even tho the helicopter never got where it was meant to due to the conditions, its just on RTE radio that they were trying to get to a woman up wicklow mountains who was in labour with triplets. Delivered successfully and they are all fine! :)

Would probably want to start monitoring these buoys now: M4 (approx 50 miles WNW of Rossan Pt in Donegal) and M6 (approx 210 miles WSW of Slyne Hd in Galway).

At 1300 the temp/dewpoints for these respectively were +4.1/-3.4 and +6.9/-2.0.

Comments, especially on the M6 reading?

    EDIT: 1400 reports now in.

    M4 +4.3/-3.4
    M6 +7.0/-2.0

Any reports from Roundwood?, Wicklow area, must be obscene amounts up there by now.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/
