Was travelling through Parnell St today and saw a pizza and kebab shop open where the Red Rose cafe was before. Another kebab shop, but better than the unit being vacant I guess.

Looks decent value for dinner but hopefully they will do lunch specials as the prices on the menu kind of rule it out as a regular lunch option

    Hi Folks,

Just looking for some input regarding a possible new venture on Thomas street in Limerick. Im looking for peoples views on a shop stocking the following product. ( Please note i fully understand the issues regarding the centre of Limerick)

Inks branded and generic, Posters ( Wall, door , and 3D), Back catalogue DvD's and CD's ( under €10, mostly from €2.99 to €6.99), Batteries ( All types and charges etc), phone covers( Blackberry and iphone to start, then maybe HTC), memory( 2GB to 16GB), black discs (DvD, CD and Blu Ray) , copier and other types of paper, Lots of earphones and headphones, printers, wall canvases to go with the posters, all types of cabling and computer accessories ( incl keyboards, mice webcams etc) , some gadgets ( Usb powered fans, cup warmers, webcams, mice, etc etc), laptop bags, ipod accessories( speakers, cables) etc. I have the option of Ipad cases aswell but not sure on those. I could also do a good value electronic cigarette.

Prices would be competitive. Looking to do volume rather than margin.

Any input appreciated. ( Please note premises are secured, suppliers are secured)

    Cheers

Think it is a good idea but i would be concerned about Thomas Street as a location, the footfall is not great, did a study myself there earlier in the summer about units and stayed away over the footfall. Good idea though, best of luck with it just rethink your premises

Try to add some retro comics, forbidden planet style to that idea, unusual albums and the like.
Limerick is calling out for that kind of indy store and what your other products it would bring people in to spend on your consumables

His premises are secured to it needs to do some revenue.

Frankly these days it is mostly all about Social Media(FREE!!) so get yourself linking to people over and over and over and keep putting up good offers and new offers. Don't spam people either.

The only place I can think of with most of what you sell under one roof would be Maplin. I'm a lazy sod myself so parking at the door of Maplin is handy but then again the internet is handy as well.

I'm intruiged anyway and would likely stick my head in the door for a "gook".

    Any website or facebook yet?

Limerick is probably lacking office blocks or call centres, off hand I'm thinking of the Revenue commissioners in Sarsfield House and Charlottes Quay, closer to the city you probably have eircom on Roches St, HSE on Catherine St and the banks on O'Connell St and that's about it - have I missed any other big employers?

The last couple I mentioned would be well within walking distance of Thomas St for a lunch time stroll, so making yourself known is the key.

BTW - I wish you well and many years of success.

    Hi Folks,

    Thanks for the replys

The location on Thomas street would be very close to O'Connell street so its not in a bad location.

My views are there's no where really in the town centre that does that kind of thing bar HMV which is more Cd's and Dvd's rather than computer supplies , headphones etc. Also i think we could be cheaper than them on most if not all of the Back catalogue Cd's and Dvd's .Blu rays i could do for between €6.99 and €9.99 . For instance Ocean's 13 blu ray i could do for €7.99. We'd have access to an order form of roughly 30,000 titles so customer orders would be possible aswell.

Batteries we could do very cheaply aswell. Pansonics/Sony being €1 for a 4 pack and Duracell Plus's being €2.99 to €3.99. Also we would be doing all of the car chargers for ipod's/ all phones etc.

I also have access to suppliers of things like sledges, snow shoes, snow shovels, all types of hats , scarfs, gloves, wellies at very keen prices for the winter season but i don't know how people would react to product like that as it wouldnt really fit in with the rest of the store

    Cheers

would stay away from the wellies hats etc but if you could get access to board games, top trumps, model kits etc they would go hand in hand with dvds and cds. You could have more of a hobby shop than just a pc electrical / stationary store.
Zero competition on toys or board games except argos.

I'm intruiged anyway and would likely stick my head in the door for a "gook".

LOL think the word you are looking for is gawk, that other word was used a lot in Platoon :p

By the way he said possible venture so I am sure he only has a verbal agreement on a unit, but he clarified the O'Connel St end. Nobody would sign a lease on a unit without a venture nailed down.

How about selling some official music memorabilia and products. There is a store in Liverpool that you could "Borrow" some ideas from:

Would agree with this, maybe a small graphic novel section. The comic/Apparel/memorabilia in the Paul Street shopping centre in Cork might be worth a look in terms of how to fit a lot into a smallish portion of your floor space.

Maybe if you are selling music you could have kind of a classic rock/rock/Metal/indie range and not do the obvious pop/chart stuff. Generally the folk that listen to the genres I suggested are more willing to spend on physical media than those who listen to pop.

Would also share Kilburn's concern about the location as Thomas Street has a pretty poor footfall and it is a footfall that has decreased year on year for a number of years now. Would love to see ya buck the trend though and well certainly pop in for a look around when you open and not for a member of the NVA like the battle hardened Beer Baron. ;)

Gook is a word actually and I, along with others, have used it for years. I'm serious.

Gawk is very "rough" Limerick. "Gis a gawk at da willaw" and the like.

What I would love is a Gadget Shop. EDIT The Gadget shop I was thinking of was in the UK called Gadgetshop.com The website now goes to WH Smith though. Ah well, it was a proper boys toys shop.

I think this is a good idea actually. Jigsaws and art sets are popular these days too, and hobbies encourage repeat visits / regular customers. Especially if you would be up and running for the xmas market. Small-scale hobbies do well enough in a recession I'd say, as people cut back on the bigger luxuries. I read a couple of months back about that new cloth shop (I think!) on John's street that opened a year ago I think, and they seem to be keeping going. I love seeing specialist shops do well, as they are proper shops imo :):)

That it is, been in there a few times, some great stuff. Go in there anytime I go to Liverpool. I'm not sure if it would survive in Limerick though, maybe it would out in the "Dreaded" Crescent :)

Heading back home again this weekend so will warn the city that a mad Irish woman is on the way next week :D

Actually if it is your first time in Liverpool for a few years, check out Liverpool One (the newest shopping area in the city centre) and then just imagine something like that in Limerick city. Would be costly, but would suck shoppers into Limerick from the surrounding counties.

Sorry for butting in but i'm heading to liverpool soon and am wondering about the sc you mentioned...Liverpool one.....is it worth a visit? is at all under one roof or is it like woodbury common in states ( all individual shops/sorta like kildare outlets)? And when looking at costs.....do things work out cheaper or dearer given the sterling changeover?

New chipper opening on William Street called golden chicken. It's where that Shwarma coffee shop was. Also sale agreed sign on new York pizza/lobster pot.
