What length quarters do you all play?

    5 minutes myself.

I play 12 minute quarters because I'm big on a game being as "sim" as possible.

same. if i want a quick game il play 5 but since i completed all the jordan challenges i liked playing 8 minute quarters

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Yeah I play 5 minutes too.

For the My Player mode anyway, it's kind of set up for 12min quarters.

There's just no way you can get to A+ in the shorter games.
To complete the challenges and get your stats up the longer games mean more digits.

Bit taxing though considering how long the season is.

I try to switch the odd game down just to save time.

Hey lads, finally gonna get this since its going cheap in a few places. Was wondering if ye can advise the best position to start out with in My Player? I want to pick SG but I see online PG gets your stats up faster. What are ye playing as?

Mad to give the Jordan challenges a go as well. I followed BBall back in the good ol' days when Channel 4 use to show NBA at the weekends and wouldn't mind playing with the classics again. While i'm here, its 22 quid on play.com, anyone see it for same or cheaper in a shop so I can trade something in?

I picked point guard myself. I like to have a lot of the ball and be able to dictate the play and its the best position for assists IMO.

You should score more points if you pick SG though.

Sold out. Would prefer to get it in a shop to trade, it's mad how rare it is. I see gamestopp online are selling it new for 18 quid but out of stock there as well.

Silly question I know but how do you play a one vs one online game. Have completed a season on rookie and love the game couldn't recommend it more.

if you want to play a randomer then just go ranked on the home screen, playing friends/lobbies press X on Xbox and I presume square if you're on PS3 and it brings up a map of the usa with a load of lights and a number saying who's online, just press the back trigger and scroll through the options until you see the friend menu.

Finally got my hands on this today. Made a complete balls of the opening game, lost by 8 points but the animation and details were exceptional. I used to watched the NBA in the 90's and was great to play as the greats again. On night shifts in work so will be a day or 2 before I can get stuck into My Player but looking forward to it!

This is my first NBA game in years, prob since the 90s.

From a noobs perspective with limited knowledge on even the actual game, the learning curve is tough.

I found it was miss after miss especially under the basket. I've came to realise that it's to do with contact(wouldnt have been in the old games) off the ball handler when shooting.
You'll pick up a lot in the My Player mode, if you go into the settings and turn the play indicators on it will tell you where to go and what to do.

Over time then seeing the plays you begin to understand the various things you should and shouldnt do with each player(when playing alone) and the roles of the position.
The training game in stealing helps to learn how to intercept passes and the general scoring system will highlight things like how to box out, successful screens, shot selection, blocking while give a clearer picture over time of what you're doing right and wrong.

I haven't played much online lately but I've learned an awful lot from the My Player mode to improve on my games upon purchase.

Just picked this up myself on the Xbox. Played one quick game on rookie level with the sliders on casual and managed to just about win it :)

A bit daunting when you open the rulebook and see all those pages of controls  so I'm just using the basic moves to start with.

Haven't played a basketball game since the Snes and never watch it, so I have no idea of tactics or positions.

Will have to have a look at some of those youtube videos at some point.

Just put the play indicators on and play some My Player.

Even when theyre just turned on for single player it will tell you who to give the ball too> PG> and where to stand to activate different plays with icons for movement etc....

The indicators are a must really.

I didn't find online videos any help, I was looking for ones to learn how to straight up steal at the start as when I was running the ball I kept losing control of it.
I still haven't learned how to take the ball that way although I'm pretty sure it's to do with Intense D and hitting Steal when you feel the vibration.
I just concentrate on intercepting passes which I learned through the My Player mode, you start to see when the player makes a dashing run out for the corner the pass will always go to him if you can make it in front of him in time.

You can get loads of practice at the mini games as well in the My Player mode.

Unless your player is a PG I'd also recommend avoiding the skills, it's so much easier to lose the ball doing them and by moving the analogue quickly by itself you can actually get space to open up.

I find i'm way too agressive with the steals, committing way too many fouls. Think i'll just play some tight D and try intercept passes when the situation arises.

Ya I had that as well, but it's possible as when I started I used to always keep the run and dribble buttons pressed and my player was constantly coughing it up.

I think it's when you're pressing Intense D(L2 i think) and the player bumps into you and stumbles(the controller vibrates as well), I'm pretty sure if you hit it there you'll knock it lose. It's never worked for me though, but I've never fouled that way and I'm always a bit slow off the mark, I reckon it needs to be pressed as soon as you feel the vibration.

Best defensive strategy for me is just forcing a bad shot. Stay tight and contest every shot.

Yupp, have been trying that tight defense with no swiping and it's working out much better. Can anyone tell me what the yellow meter under the player is? It goes full under the basket and decreases the further you get from the basket. Is this the likeliness of making the shot?

Also, any tips doing the double cross over in the dribbling course? Only move I can't consistently pull off and trying to get those Speed points!

I think it's a players ability to make that shot. So it ll go up for people who specialises in 3Ptrs and it'll move down for that person if they get closer to the basket. If it goes blue it means your on a cold steak and are less likely to make a shot regardless of how good the player is, red is the opposite it's your heat streak and your more inclined to make shots.

Probably the hardest game to play on defence the AI will pump fake all day every day if you go for swipe and probably power past you to make a shot.

I'll give you a game, I'll add you later.

I had two online games the last day, the first ones since I've got to grips with it.
Trashed the first fella then the second picked Miami and pulled away in the last 1/4... he just kept rushing for the paint with Lebron and dunking.
When he was shooting he wasn't much good... I think I'll be avoiding Miami players any more(just like Real/Chelsea bandits in FIFA)

I had the auto save turned off in my player and kept replaying the drills trying to get gold. Finally realised you don't have to do all the moves in the dribble drill to get gold. Got gold in all 6 drills (do more drills ever appear?) and went onto the games. My team sucks balls! My PG is a glory hole who takes awful shots, my Centre can't make a layup and no one will pass me the ball haha. I pick and roll into the paint and no pass. I never call for a pass as nba 2k11 always punished me for it so I break free head toward the basket and call for the ball and my grade disappears by a quarter!

As frustrating as it can get, with giving you a bad grade for something completely out of your hands, it is mental fun at the same time. 2 games played and averaging -A score.

So, does it work that after my next game, a team will draft me (hopefully) and then I play their summer camp where I try to get on the starting line up?

Got any shooting tips for me? I'm ok in an exhibition with a decent team but when I've tried the My Player mode, hardly any of my shots go in. Playing as a SG with decent enough shooting skills but finding it hard to know when to release....

I'm the same, its rare I hit the green indicator. I'm in the 60's and 70's in my shot stats. I spose it depends on your situation - close, medium, 3pt, in traffic, off dribble etc. I'm just lashing any skill points into those. Once they are in the 80's (except 3pt) I will move onto other stats

Are ye finding shot stick or square button easier?

It doesn't matter who you play with, your team mates are always like that.
I'm with Orlando now in my second play through(on a different PS3 as I lost my other save to YLOD) and I had the exact same problem at every team.
It's very annoying, apart from D.Howard the rest constantly miss, even free shots from close range

If they won't pass the ball maybe you're not running the plays?.... When I get frustrated off standing in the designated spots sometimes I go legging it into space and they won't pass it.
As I said before, the play indicators are a must unless you know the exact role for every set play.
Go into options from the main menu and turn on the ''play visibility'' or whatever they're called.... FULL Plays and for single player turning Offence/Defence Auto play calls will mean you don't have to worry about selecting plays for online games which is a huge help IMO(and the indicators there will give passing routes etc..)

I have the same problem.... but online only.

I can get a green and sink nearly every shot with my player then it's miss after miss online.

This is either due to one of two things:

1.Different players have different jump routines
2.The lag I think I can feel when navigating the menus are making a pass are effecting my timing for releasing the jumpshot

Turn the ''jumpshot feedback'' on for a while maybe. it gets in the way of 3 point shots but at least then you'll know whether your man is getting the shot off correctly or is it a second factor(pressure, ability).
My guys round 81 for close, medium and under and if I get a free shot off and green it I score most of the time.
