Like the new issue. But... page 9, in the 'Dramatic slowdown etc.' article...

"In the past, mature students were entitled automatically to the higher non-adjacent rate of up to etc."

That is, unfortunately, not true. Unless you mean 'some mature students'. Or unless the 'past' you're talking about is more than three years ago. I only say it because a number of mature students I know, myself also, are not and never were eligible automatically for any grant at all. Or for the back to education allowance for that matter.

The means testing system in this country is broken.

Thanks for pointing that out. You're right, it should have said 'some'.

Resurrected thread, but well done on the new Print Rob. It's starting to take a bit more shape now methinks.

    Also market.nuimsu.com is simply excellent.

Hey guys, must say, I've read every copy printed and as a whole it's really very good! However, for your sake as well as mine I'll just mention the bits I noticed that were less admirable than the rest.

Ad for the Astro talk that happened the day before the issue was released.
Entire page of XKCD comics (I'm a fan, but one is enough, really)
Opinion pieces in the News section (namely Cathal's section)
    Full page adverts.
Thomas' name on Donal's piece, Donal's name on Thomas' piece (twice in a row!)
And lastly, really dark and unclear photographs.

Why isn't The Print or anyone associated with it nominated for any Student Media Awards?

    Nominees

Or why isn't anyone from Maynooth up for anything? The Student Observer surely should have at least had a look in for blog of the year.

    Yo!

    In short:

    1. Astro talk: overtaken by events, so small it missed my eye!

    2. XKCD: Basically, the people who usually help out with that page are all super busy this time of year, so that's why there's a giant XKCD infographic, a wall of sudoku and a few full page ads!

    3. Thomas v Donal: Have it here in front of me, pretty sure they're the right names? I just go by the email I get, I *could* be wrong though.

    5. Photos: Yup, some are pretty dark / unclear. The truth is that photos undergo about 10 min of processing each before they can go in or else they come out crazy on newsprint (exact process is explained earlier in this thread), so the ones that look meh are the ones that couldn't get processed on time.

The Print has gotten way, way, way too large a project this year for one person to handle. One human brain just isn't big enough to run it all / administer something this sprawling and complex. A few things either can't get done in time for press or else fall through the cracks. So that's why Keith Broni is making it a society next year, though he'd be able to tell you more about his plans than me!

Thanks for the feedback as always :) Info on the SMedias soon. Though at the moment I can tell you that the reason we're not shortlisted for stuff has nothing to do with the quality of the paper or journalism :)

What are the cances that there is still a copy around somewhere?! I've been looking every day since I heard the new issue was out!

The RUC kidnapped many, but returned them yesterday. They'll be distributed when I'm back from sick leave. But I put a few hundred around ARTs around 8am today, you'll probably find one there :)

There's some copies at the little table beside the information desk in the student services building if anyone wants to read it.

I think making it into a society is a great idea. Far, far too much work for one person

In fairness I think BuroniKiisu chipped in quite a bit, and got his VP Comms position largely on the back of it.

In fairness, Broni does trojan work on every issue.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

Ah yeah, I know that. I just meant that it seems like a good idea because at the end of the day a student newspaper should be the whole college's responsibility and not just one person's, because that's a lot of pressure.

I really hope Cathal Donnelly's latest offering for the print was meant to be tongue in cheek. A poor attempt at sensationalism, misrepresentation and lot of irrelevant rambling isn't a great way to present an opinion and I'm at a loss as to why an article with such an obvious political bias was allowed to be printed. Political slants are a-ok, but the truth only bends so far before it snaps.

And by Trojan you mean he sneaks in under the cover of darkness pretending to be a gift and then BAM! dead people everywhere, right?

I'm inclined to agree, actually. I just noticed you missed commenting on that, Banquo

There's little in the way of news in that article, and sticking an "opinion" label on it doesn't justify it's position in the paper.

Ahem, the horse was buily by the Greeks to trick the Trojans, not the other way 'round... ;)

I didn't read the article in question but I assume the article is about the Queen? Cathal is entitled to his opinion as much as anyone else is. Just like the opinion piece which made the front page of the paper after the November march which was nothing but lies.

Indeed, it was about the Queen.

I'm certainly not the sort of person to deny freedom of speech, don't get me wrong.

But this specific article was printed in the 'News' section. It was naught but, as Advocate put it, nationalist rhetoric and hypocrisy.

Fine for a rag, fine even for an opinions section, but it was not news. Stamping 'Opinions' on it still did not justify it's place in that paper.

I like Cathal, I get on well with him. But tht article...
