Paul Kelly has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. I guess he won't be making a UFC return any time soon!

    http://www.mmafighting.com/2013/6/18/4442980/veteran-fighter-paul-kelly-sentenced-to-13-years-for-heroin
Veteran fighter Paul Kelly's mixed martial arts career is likely over after he was recently sentenced to 13 years in prison by a British court for heroin trafficking.

The 28-year-old Kelly, a native of Liverpool, England, was sentenced by the Liverpool Crown Court for his role as the ringleader of a drug-trafficking ring.

Sentencing judge Mark Brown broke down the reasoning for the sentence against the ex-UFC fighter. "In my judgement you decided to supply Class A drugs when your contract with UFC was terminated," Brown was quoted as saying in the Liverpool Echo. "You obviously enjoyed the high life and saw selling heroin as an easy way to make money."

Kelly fought nine times in the UFC from 2008-11, compiling a record of 5-4. He was twice awarded Fight of the Night honors: First for a UFC 80 victory over Paul Taylor, then for his UFC 126 loss to Donald Cerrone. The Cerrone fight was his last in the UFC.

Kelly, a father of two children, last fought in March, winning a first-round knockout over Henrique Santana in Essex, England.

Can't work out why the chose Bader to fight Teixeira next, surely he should be fighting some in top 3 at this stage

UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 targets Belo vs. Horizonte, Teixeira vs. Bader and 'Jacare'-Okami

The UFC's third event on FOX Sports 1 will reportedly take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and a pair of high-profile contests are apparently targeted for the evening's main card.

The UFC on FOX Sports 1 3 main event will reportedly see light heavyweights Glover Teixeira (21-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and Ryan Bader (15-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) face off, while middleweight action sees Yushin Okami (29-7 MMA) face Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (18-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

The targeted location and bookings were first reported by Brazilian outlet Portal do Vale Tudo. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed the likely plans with multiple sources close to the event, though UFC officials have yet to make any formal announcements.

Teixeira and Bader were actually expected to fight this past May at UFC 160. However, Bader suffered an injury in training and was replaced by James Te Huna, who was submitted by Teixeira in the first round of the contest.

Teixeira now boasts an incredible 19-fight win streak and a perfect 4-0 mark in the UFC. Meanwhile, Bader looks to build on the strength of a January win over Vladimir Matyushenko. The much-needed result for Bader helped reduce the sting of a devastating knockout loss to Lyoto Machida this past August.

Okami returns to Brazil to fight for the first time since a failed August 2011 bud to unseat middleweight champ Anderson Silva. Okami actually lost his next fight, as well, in a disappointing result against Tim Boetsch but has since bounced back with victories over Hector Lombard, Alan Belcher and Buddy Roberts.

Meanwhile, former Strikeforce champ Souza returns to action after a successful UFC debut at May's UFC on FX 8 event. It was the submission specialist's fourth straight victory, and he's now 8-1 in his past nine overall fights. Following that win, UFC President Dana White revealed he was already working on a Souza-Okami matchup.

The UFC first visited Belo Horizonte, the sixth-most populous city in Brazil in June 2012 for "UFC 147: Silva vs. Franklin II."

    totally agree

I think it's obvious that the UFC is slowing down the career trajectory of fighters at this stage to squeeze as much business as it can out of what it has because of it's obscenely dominant champions i.e. Silva, Jones and GSP

    On another note
Glover v Machida would rock !! but they're good mates and Machida said he'd go down to 185 if Glover got the next shot at Jones and beat him. Awful pity we won't get to see these two fight - I can't think of a more competitive fight in the UFC right now. If Machida gets another crack at Jones and beats him Glover said he'd go to HW !!! I'd actually love to see Glover take on some of the HW lads - he'd beat a good few I reckon, he'd prob be 230 lb easy.

Bader is a name fighter that Glover should dispose of, therefore keeping him in line for a title shot without (As much) risk of him losing if he were to fight a top 10 fighter.

Glover machida would have been better

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,148 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

Bader isn't beneath Glover. The only real big name GLover has beaten so far is Rampage and that was a guy who had let the sport pass him by. He didn't look particularly impressive either.

Apart from Rampage, the Glover hypre train is just that. Hype. He's looked good at times but has yet to prove he can really mix it with the elite of the elite, never mind become Champion.

Bader is a good fight for him. Altough I agree with above, i'd have prefered Machida. But Machida is due to fight Phil Davis.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

Machida ain't ever fighting Glover (or Silva while we're at it)... they've said as much

and on paper you're right about Glover not beating the best there is deffo - but if you asked 100 MMA writers 95 would say he's top drawer - top 4 or even 3. Not on paper as you say - but he is an animal. I wouldn't write him off completely against Jones but almost.

UFC website have Glover ranked 3rd that title shot territory just looking at his record granted he hassn't fought big names but he has 17 straight wins or something close to that.Thats a big accomplished in MMA

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,043 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Teixeira is nowhere near a top 3 fight yet.
He is only just rising into the top 10. Bader has had a bit of a rise and fall previous, but they are both around the same point now.

    Was good matchmaking imo

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,830 ✭✭✭Be like Nutella

Glover destroys Bader, Shogun (now) and Nog (now). Not at their best but now.

Evans, Hendo, Mousasi and Davis are very competitive but I reckon bookies and experts would have him fav in all 4 fights. He has more game than Davis. More size, KO ability and ground game than Evans. Hendo is just over the hill, relatively speaking (sad but true). Mousasi would need to be on his A-game... but hard to call that one. Which leaves Gusto, Machida and Jones. He's never fighting Machida as he's said, Gusto would be too long for him probably and Jones would beat him as much as anyone bar Machida.

Glover is clearly considered to be top drawer - not just top 10 but top 3-4. The only guys in the conversation about Jones are Gusto, Glover and Machida! Feeding Glover Bader is career cushioning at best and p1ss taking at worst. Bader is not very good, never has been never will be. He's a big predictable lump with great heart is all he is.

The Goldilocks Glover match ups are

    Mousasi Glover

    Evans Glover

    Davis Glover

Jones and Gusto take him apart.

    He's top 3, maybe top 4 at worst !

It seems Tim Kennedy is the latest fighter to speak out against UFC fighter pay. He says he'd make more money as a garbage man.
I hope this isn’t the reality of the sport, if it is I should probably go do something else, like empty trash cans. I’d make more money than I do now."

Kennedy made $80,000 to beat Trevor Smith, $54,940 in his loss to Luke Rockhold, $50,000 against Melvin Manhoef. There was a fight with Robbie Lawler during that span where pay wasn't disclosed but it would be a safe bet that it was at least $50,000.

So that's at least $234,940 since 2011 in pay. While those were all fights under the Strikeforce banner, three of the four fights came after Zuffa purchased the promotion. Also, only one of those fights came in 2012 thanks to the way the promotion fell apart.

Near a quarter of a million dollars in a two year span would seem like plenty of money to get by on, right?

Well, Kennedy told GrappleTalk that his salary for UFC 162 breaks down like this:

Kennedy revealed that he was due around $55,000 to show up at UFC 162, with the purse potentially increasing to $70,000 with a win bonus – but that after the expenses of his camp, medicals and fight team, he would only pocket around $20,000, even before taxes. After the interview, Kennedy sent a detailed breakdown of how his fight purse would be divided up: 13% on gym fees, 12% for nutrition, 10% to his manager, 10% to his coach, 8% on his camp lodging, 3% for fight medicals and 3% on equipment. In total, that’s 59% of his fight purse before tax is deducted.

I think it's a bit rich coming from a guy who hasn't even fought in the UFC yet.
If things are that bad then go fight for someone else, or go be a bin man and keep mma as a hobby if bin men are paid that much.
Nobody forces these guy to fight. They see the contract before they sign so its not like its a surprise to them.
Either get a better agent to get you a better deal, or shut up about it.

And I think his figures may be a bit skewed too. Either that or he's being ripped off. Sounds like he needs a new accountant aswell.

The UFC is a big stingy mean ass money machine that treats its fighters like a bunch of prize fighting scumbags money-wise... as opposed to the modern professional athlete that these guys by and large are. The UFC does hundreds of millions in ppv each year and Dana is worth more than 100 Million quid. All in all I reckon they don't pay enough to the vast majority of the fighters which fill most of their cards and certainly don't pay enough to first timers or first 3 fight deals. I don't care if this starts up again but that's my opinion as I've said before it's a scabby money making machine and deserves less and less credibility with every crap match up and over hyped challenger that Joe and Dana roll out to us all in a bid to squeeze as much business out of their roster as possible as opposed to letting the best fight the best which is what it should be - and if you say 'well it's a business get used to it' that's fair enough I say 'it's a scabby business full of BS and crap pay'

UFC should do him a favour and cancel his contract so he can go and become a garbage man!

He's taken back a lot of what he said on Facebook:
I recently made comments regarding fighter pay. The intent of these statements was to highlight that professional fighters incur significant expense associated with their preparations to fight and that fighter compensation is still not on par with other major sports. While I am fortunate to have various revenue streams associated with my business interests, most fighters do not have that luxury. When you spend training camps with great guys with amazing talents and you see them barely making ends meet, while simultaneously seeing athletes in other sports with far less character and a far smaller work ethic making exponentially more, you can get frustrated.
Unfortunately, I made statements that alluded to how the UFC in particular pays its athletes. This was particularly offensive as Zuffa has taken better care of me than any other organization, even giving me a bonus for being amusing on Twitter. My choice of words was poor, not properly informed, and did not match my intent. Additionally, my comments were taken out of context. I can tell you that I have been fighting longer than most people and I remember all too well the days when there was no regulation or standard for an MMA promotion. I fought many times in Mexico where the rules were negligible, there were no physicals, and being paid was a luxury we didn’t expect. Our sport was shunned and was considered “human cockfighting”. Today, we are on Fox. We have doctors and insurance. We make more money than the average American. And we get these things by playing a sport we love. The only reason this is possible is because of Zuffa. They have legitimized the sport and taken better care of the athletes than any other organization, and the trend is only improving, with athletes making three times what they made on average five years ago.
My comments were hurtful and inappropriate. I accept full responsibility for the statements and apologize to the UFC, Dana White, Lorenzo Fertita, & Joe Silva as well as anyone I might have offended with my comments. Fighting for the UFC is an honor and a privilege. I look forward to putting this situation behind me and focusing on my upcoming fight with Roger Gracie.

Looks like Nick Diaz is up to his old tricks.
I was just reading on mmafighting.com that he texted Dana White and said he broke up with his girlfriend and wants to fight!
He also asked Dana to find him a hotel room for last nights fight. All the hotels were booked up but Dana managed to get him a room.
Then Diaz did what he does best........he didn't show up! :D

Tim Kennedy complained over a $60K to show purse with a $30K win bonus. He is an idiot and to make matters worse Weidman nearly got half that and beat the longest reigning champion in UFC history.

sh1te.... so yeah I'll just get me knife and fork for this hat here.... very impressed with Weidman.

I'm heading to Vegas on Jan. 30th for a few days - hoping to catch an event over there only to hear that for the first time in 10 years they won't be in Vegas for the Superbowl weekend.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,148 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

I had read that UFC were scheduling Jones v Gus for Las Vegas, so I planned my holiday this year with the missus so we could go to New York then hit Vegas where Mayweather v Alvarez is on and then the UFC the week after.

The UFC card was booked for Canada. Now we're going to Portugal on holiday. :P
