This song means a lot to me.

My cousin used to sing it all the time, at parties his friends told me he would just whip out a guitar and sing it and everyone would join in spontaneously. It's not the coolest song in the land but it's fun. I posted it on his facebook wall when I was over, at the time he was sleeping so I couldn't show it to him. He died 3 hours later. Whenever I hear it I always think of him, and even though it's a fun song it has the reverse affect on me

Love that song will but could understand how it makes you sad. Maybe one day it will make you smile.

I'm a long time radiohead fan, and the last few days I can't get this out of my head:
    Thom Yorke wrote:
    Riot shields, voodoo economics
It's just business, cattle prods, and the IMF
I trust I can rely on your vote

When I go forwards, you go backwards
    Somewhere we will meet
When I go forwards, you go backwards
    And somewhere we will meet

Reminds me of being 13, absolutely eat/sleep/breathing Radiohead, and pretending I got the context of this song. My god I do now.

'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye...' :
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm..
yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but now it's come to distances, and, both of us must try,
your eyes are soft with sorrow..
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye...

I'm not looking for another as I wander in my time,
walk me to the corner, our steps will always rhyme
you know my love goes with you as your love stays with me,
it's just the way it changes, like the shoreline and the sea,
but let's not talk of love or chains, and things we can't untie,
your eyes are soft with sorrow..
Hey, that's no way to say goodbye...

I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm,
yes many loved before us, I know that we are not new,
in city and in forest they smiled like me and you,
but let's not talk of love or chains, and things we can't untie,

(Leonard Cohen.) Loooong story but gets me when I hear it again.

    Animals

Have you forgotten what we were like then
when we were still first rate
and the day came fat with an apple in its mouth

it's no use worrying about Time
but we did have a few tricks up our sleeves
    and turned some sharp corners

the whole pasture looked like our meal
    we didn't need speedometers
we could manage cocktails out of ice and water

I wouldn't want to be faster
or greener than now if you were with me O you
were the best of all my days

    Frank O'Hara

    OR

    same sentiment, different author:

    SHALLOW
Ha, cousin Silence, that thou hadst seen that that
this knight and I have seen! Ha, Sir John, said I well?
    FALSTAFF
We have heard the chimes at midnight, Master Shallow.
    SHALLOW

That we have, that we have, that we have; in faith,
Sir John, we have: our watch-word was 'Hem boys!'

Heard this gem of a song recently, it's honestly beautiful.

    Are you standing outside?
    Looking up at the sky
    Cursing a wondering star
    Well If I were you
I'd throw rocks at the moon
I'd say damn you wherever you are
I don't know where to start
    This cage 'round my heart
Locked up what I'd meant to say
Or I felt all along the way
    Just wondering how come
I couldn't take your breath away

    Cause I never sent roses
    I never did enough
I didn't know how to love you
Though I loved you so much
    When I should've sent roses
    When you crossed my mind
    No other reason
Than the fact you were mine
    I should've sent roses

    Looking back on my life
    Oh, if fate should decide

I could do it all over again
    I'd build no more walls
    I'd stay true and recall
The fragrance of you on the wind
    You'll get better than me
    Someone who can see
    Right from the start
    Given all that you need
    I'll slip away
Knowing I'm half the man I could be

    Cause I never sent roses
    I never did enough
I didn't know how to love you
Though I loved you so much
And I should have sent roses
    When you crossed my mind
    For no other reason
Than the fact you were mine
    I should've sent roses
    Yeah should've sent roses

While in the Platelet Clinic the other week there is a poster on the wall and it read's "To the world you maybe one person, but to one person you are the world" it sums life up I think.

This lament was written by the Polish composer Gorecki, who died recently. It is inspired by a note scratched on a wall in a Gestapo prison in Poland by a teenage girl who knew she was not going to get out of the place, except in a box. :(
The words are very simple: merely appealing to her mother not to cry, and to the Virgin Mary to protect her.

It is a most heartbreaking, chilling, haunting piece of music. Harrowing to listen to if it were not for its beauty...

^ I know that piece of music very well. I cant listen to it without the tears starting unfortunately.

    From Nietzche [Gay Science]

Star friendship.— We were friends and have become estranged. But this was right, and we do not want to conceal and obscure it from ourselves as if we had reason to feel ashamed. We are two ships; each of which has its goal and course. Our paths may cross and we may celebrate a feast together, as we did—and then the good ships rested so quietly in one harbor and one sunshine that it may have looked as if they had reached their goal and as if they had one goal. But then the almighty force of our tasks drove us apart again into different seas and sunny zones, and perhaps we shall never see each other again; perhaps we shall meet again but fail to recognize each other: our exposure to different seas and suns has changed us. That we have to become estranged is the law above us; by the same token we should also become more venerable for each other—and the memory of our former friendship more sacred. There is probably a tremendous but invisible stellar orbit in which our very different ways and goals may be included as small parts of this path; let us rise up to this thought. But our life is too short and our power of vision too small for us to be more than friends in the sense of this sublime possibility. —Let us then believe in our star friendship even if we should be compelled to be earth enemies.

It makes for very painful listening all right, Metro. Terrifying in parts too - to think of what she endured... :(
It actually evokes all sorts of emotions in me - there's even a part of it that is ever so slightly uplifting, maybe simply because it's so staggeringly beautiful...

Some things we don't talk about
    better do without
    just hold a smile
we're falling in and out of love
    the same damn problem

    together all the while
    you can never say never
    why we don't know when
    time and time again
younger now then we were before
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go

picture, you're the queen of everything
as far as the eye can see
    under your command
    i will be your guardian
    when all is crumbling
    steady your hand

    you can never say never
    why we don't know when
    time and time again
younger now then we were before
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go,
    don't let me go

    we're falling apart
and coming together again and again
    we're coming apart
    but we pull it together
    pull it together, together again

    Don't let me go.

Look up Max Richter, 'The Nature of Daylight'.
It's on youtube. Also 'Vladimir's Blues', a short piano piece that you'll probably recognise.

'Sometimes it seems the harder you try to hold on to something or someone, the more it wants to get away. You feel like some kind of criminal for having felt, for having wanted. It confuses you, because you think that your feelings were wrong, and it makes you feel so small because it's so hard to keep it inside when you let it out and it doesn't come back. You're left so alone that you can't explain.'

"And there's no blame for how our love did slowly fade
And now that it's gone, it's like it wasn't there at all
And here I rest, where disappointment and regret collide
    Lying awake at night..."

    This just always floors me.

'Spirit' from the Waterboys live gig at Glastonbury, 1986

"Fear is a black tower built by man
brick by brick and deed by deed
it is the fuel on which our faint hearts feed
Love is just a whisper a breath and nothin more
    but love will win
because love is coming from an endless store"

Searched the thread and didn't see this posted yet. And I can't believe I only now just remembered it.

In my opinion, if there was ever a song that defined me and my breakup. This is it. Most beautiful song that was ever sang.

Lyrics below, I would bold the important bits.. but it's all important to me.

Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water
And maybe i'm too young to keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind so you never know

Broken down and hungry for your love but no way to feed it
Where are you tonight, child you know how much i need it
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away, when he feels like he should be having his fun
And much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no-one

So I'll wait for you..... and I'll burn
Will i ever see your sweet return
    Oh will I ever learn

Oh lover, you should've come over
    'cause it's not too late

Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that won't ever come

It's never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It's never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over, she's the tear that hangs inside my song forever

Well maybe I'm just too young
To keep good love from going wrong

Oh.... lover, you should've come over
    'cause it's not too late

Well I feel too young to hold on
And I'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage I've done

Sweet lover, you should've come over
Oh, love well I'm waiting for you

    Lover, you should've come over
    Cause it's not too late........

    Sonnet XLIII

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
    Upon the glass and listen for reply;
And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.
Thus in the winter stands a lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet know its boughs more silent than before:
    I cannot say what loves have come and gone;
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.

    Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)

I like the end part the best.

    there's nobody you can accuse
the mirror portrays a bold truth
and from inside its what you do

start digging around and you'll find
missing for years your own life
your're better off trying not to hide
not to hide, trying not to hide

Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock - naff as hell but this song gets me everytime...

Livin my life in a slow hell
Different girl every night at the hotel
    I ain't seen the sunshine
    In three damn days
Been fuelin'up on cocaine and whiskey
Wish I had a good girl to miss me
Lord I wonder if I'll ever change my ways
    I put your picture away
    Sat down and cried today
I can't look at you while I'm lying next to her
    I put your picture away
    Sat down and cried today
I can't look at you while I'm lying next to her

I called you last night in the hotel
Everyone knows but they won't tell
But their half-hearted smiles tell me somethin' just ain't right
I've been waitin' on you for a long time
Fuelin' up on heartaches and cheap wine
I ain't heard from you in three damn nights
    I put your picture away
    I wonder where you been
I can't look at you while I'm lyin' next to him
    I put your picture away
    I wonder where you been
I can't look at you while I'm lyin' next to him

I saw you yesterday with an old friend
It was the same old same how've you been?
Since you've been gone my worlds been dark and grey
You reminded me of brighter days
I hoped you were comin' home to stay
    I was headed to church
I was off to drink you away

I thought about you for a long time
Can't seem to get you off my mind
I can't understand why we're living life this way
    I found your picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home
    I found your picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home
I just called to say I love you, come back home

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)
i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
    i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

    My Dad is great for throwing out philosophical phrases in response to any situation. Some classics;

"He who feared he would not succeed sat still"

"When a woman weeps, she is setting traps with her tears"

"To argue with a drunk is to wrong a man who is not even there"

James Blunt "Goodbye my lover" - ok the lyrics are fairly self explanatory (no deep metaphors here!) but the line

"and I still hold your hand in mine, at night when I'm alseep..."

    gets me every time.....

Love this thread. I looked up Warm by The Coronas after reading it on here... Honestly, it took so much not to cry.

I don't even know where to start with the lyrics that mean something to me because I seem to find a little phrase or something in nearly every song that I hear. Only one song is jumping out at me.

The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars - A lot of people seem to think that it's about a relationship with someone else but it's really about the relationship you have with yourself, the video for the song explains it. My favourite lines:

"I tried to be someone else but nothing seemed to change, I know now this is who I really am inside. I've finally found myself. Fighting for a chance, I know now this is who I really am."

I'm going down through my playlist right now to find more.

Walls by All Time Low - "I'm gonna break down these walls I built around myself. I wanna fall so in love with you and no-one else could ever mean half as much to me as you do now."

Almost every song by the band Alter Bridge. They're an amazing band, check them out. I love them so much and I'd absolutely love to see them live but they're not big in Ireland so doubt it will ever happen. I'll just add a few from random Alter Bridge songs.

"Left to face this alone, left to die with nothing you can hold. Left to break in the cold.." - Slip to the Void

"Cast a line when I saw you were drowning, still you turned your back on me." - Still Remains

"Though you've lost your way now, it's not forever. But I know your pain. We all fall sometimes, you're not the first but I know it hurts. In the end you'll find what you deserve. Still I know it hurts, I know it hurts." - I Know It Hurts. Just love the message behind this song - you're never alone no matter what's going on in your life.

In Loving Memory by the same band is a beautiful song. Can really be applied to and mean something to anybody. If you've lost a loved one, this song will speak to you.

I won't keep going because I'll be here for the night and I don't think people will like me very much for submitting a novel for a post! I read into everything I listen to, readers won't appreciate it. Lol.

    Calvin Harris - The girls

    "Now maybe
I can learn to settle down one day
    But right now
I'm living life to mess around and play"

My ex kept booty texting me, so this was my tag line on my bebo for ages. It took me a few months to finally settle down, but Christ did I play! :D

    Wakey Wakey - Light Outside

I know you want to stay in bed
    But it's light outside
    It's light outside

So know I am going to stay right here
Because you saved my life once
    You saved my life

And I would try to get you out because it's beautiful outside
    And we will fall
    We will try
And do our best and I love you otherwise
Because you saved my life once
Because you saved my life once

I know you want to rest your head
    and just forget the night
    forget the night
So you know I am going to stay right here
    And sit by your side
    By your side

And I would try to get you out because it's beautiful outside
    And we will fall
    We will try
And do our best and I love you otherwise
Because you saved my life once
Because you saved my life once

I think you always knew would be
I think you always knew would be
    The greatest
I think you always knew would be
I think you always knew would be
    The greatest

Because you saved my life once

    A Fine Frenzy - Happier

Quick kid quips, so harsh and cynical
    Touches stricken cold and clinical
    Such a transformation to behold
I don't like this new, I like the old

It's not the words that make it final
You've said such things before to rival them
But it's how you say them now that's changed
Cold but sympathetic all the same

You'd like to convince me that I'll be better off

So you go on and I'll be happier
    I'll be happier
You go on, yeah, you go on
You'll be gone and I'll be happier

Shoot me with your rubber bullets
Your finger's on the trigger, pull it
I know you want the suffering to end
And so, it is forgivable my friend

All to convince me that I'll be better off

So you go on and I'll be happier
You go on and I'll be happier
You go on, yeah, you go on
You'll be gone and I'll be happier

Say what you mean, what you mean
Is you'll be happier without me
    Without me
    Without me

All to convince me that I'll be better off
So you go on and I'll be happier
    I'll be happier
You go on, yeah, you go on
You'll be gone and I'll be gone
you go on and I'll be happier
