Groundhog Day maybe? Not exactly a RomCom but it does have some romance and I find it a feelgood film.

Anyone have any recommendations for any well "scummy" Irish films. As in anything along the lines of Intermission, Perrier's Bounty, Barrytown trilogy etc. By in large I find them funny but anything with a little more story and substance to it would be good. So essentially anything set in Ireland, a Dublin accent would be a good addition, revolving around crime wouldn't be bad etc. Thanks.

As a side note anything English that almost fits that description would be good too.

The Halo Effect is a great little film. You'd probably like that. Set in a Dublin chip shop.

I have been watching some French films lately. I am a fan of Isabelle Huppert. She is really excellent in Une Affaire de Femmes. The English title is the Story of Women. It is based on a true story of a woman called Marie-Louise Giraud who was an abortionist in the Cherbourg area and was made an example of in 1943 during the occupation of France. The film version is a little different from the real story in that only the principal character is prosecuted. In reality the women who used her services were prosecuted also.
As far as I know Isabelle Huppert has only appeared in one English language movie so if you don't want to miss her very fine acting you have to watch her in French films.

Recently I've started watching old films mostly black and white but also from the Hitchcock era such as Sabetour, getting Netflix soon and working on a media room wondering if you guys could compose a list of must see films from the 30s-80s..not a proper list of course it'd take ages just people throw around some suggestions, cheers :)

    Double Indemnity.

Are you just interested in seeing old Hollywood films or would you watch foreign stuff as well? Fritz Lang (most famous for the 1927 film Metropolis) made "M" in 1931, absolutely fantastic thriller which still looks good today.

Charlie Chaplin's films such as Modern Times & The Great Dictator are timeless classics & absolutely must-sees.

Moving to later decades classic American films like Rebel Without A Cause & Blackboard Jungle which both explore the difficulties of adolescence are still pretty relevant. Another great film from the 50s is Asphalt Jungle, about a heist gone wrong, very exciting stuff that apparently inspired Reservoir Dogs.

In terms of movies from the 60s & 70s Easy Rider is an incredibly cool film to watch, beautiful visuals & a great soundtrack. Taxi Driver is Robert de Niro at his creepiest, fantastic performance. Check out The Last Detail from 1973, imho one of Jack Nicholson's finest roles & a film that should be shown a hell of a lot more than it is.

OK that's a pretty random mix of stuff with no exact pattern to it but should give you a few ideas. Details for all can be found on IMDB.com.

From the 30s on, you might try to sample a couple of different genres.

Some of the comedies remain popular, including Chaplin and Keating (both quite physical humour) and the Marx Brothers (more verbal). Other names here include Abbott and Costello, and Laurel and Hardy.

Then there are film noirs. There's an overview of some of the more famous ones here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_noir#Classic_period

Some surprisingly modern films exist from the 30s and 40s. You might try the films of Powell and Pressburger (a British partnership), which where influential on Martin Scorsese. Citizen Kane often tops best of lists.

Moving on, some Hitchcock is rewarding. His most famous include Vertigo, Rear Window, Strangers on a Train and The Birds, but he has lots of good stuff.

You might try some of Hollywood's former favourite genre: the westerns. Try some of the films where Forde directed John Wayne. Another brilliant western is High Noon, but sample a few - they came in all sorts of styles. Then try For a Fistful of Dollars - the first of a trilogy in the late sixties that made Clint Eastwood a star and a really cool stylised western, full of machismo and Mexican standoffs set to an incredible score.

Speaking of Eastwood, Dirty Harry is the protype of the tough as nails cop who is obsessed with getting the bad guy.

You might try some of Stanley Kubrick's films. There are some amazing ones.

The 70s are where the summer blockbuster started. Sample Jaws (Spielberg) and Star Wars (Lucas) before Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Spielberg and Lucas). But also sample some of the quality drama that got made in the 70s, like The Godfather movies, and Kramer vs Kramer.

In the 80s, try some Michael Mann crime movies (and zip forward to 95 for his masterpiece - Heat), Arnold Schwarzenegger action movies (Conan, The Terminator, Commando, Predator, The Running Man), and John Hughes coming of age movies (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, etc.).

    Also, watch Airplane.

Check out Roberto Rossellini's War trilogy, very good series.

    Chinatown is excellent too.

OK, might try this one again...

There's been a lot of recommendation threads over the last week or two, so bumping this thread to try and tidy the process up. The first post describes this thread's purpose, but basically if you're looking for a recommendation from a specific genre, director, actor, country etc... post here and hopefully people will be kind enough to oblige :)

I'll let the existing threads run their course, but I'll merge any further threads that are started into here, on a temporary basis anyway to see if it can gain some momentum.

Can I ask why? You're cutting out a whole lot of great stuff. I've listed 3 American films above but I think my top 3 would be all foreign.

    Hi,
Please recommend some films to watch without my wife/while she's away. (any jokes about porn is a bit too obvious....)

She likes her films but if she's not around I'd normally watch something more 'world cinema', violent, odd etc. On my own I prefer to watch something fast/with 'something happening' and not films with 'little happening', e.g. Nebraska (while still a good film).

Some recent examples are Enemy (good but could have been condensed into 30 mins short film), Snowpiercer, Requiem for a Dream.

    Thanks in advance,
    Pa.

Thanks for the quick reply but maybe to help-
I don't like martial arts, JCVD action films
I like sci fi, bleak films (sounds odd I know) such as The Road (slow but fantastic), Requiem for a Dream, comedies etc.
