Did you watch The Hidden afterwards?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,735 ✭✭✭pinksoir

I did. It was super sweet. Saying it's like a combination of Terminator and The Thing is just about spot on. It's kinda similar to They Live too, in a way.

Nice one. Gotta love that wheelchair scene at the beginning :D

I generally skip over recommendations that haven't got imdb links as if someone lists 10 films,
I'm not going to spend all day finding out whether they are in fact any good.

Personally, I'd like this to be stickied, whatever you think yourself really though.

Ha, I feel it sets the film up nicely alright!

Thought I'd add a few classics to the thread.

Double Indemnity: Quite simply, one of the best films that I have ever seen.
Beautifully pieced together film noir. Billy Wilder wrote and directed.

The Maltese Falcon: Again, more film noir. This one starring Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre. Bogart stars as a private detective caught up in something.

The Kid: My own personal favourite Chaplin film.

It Happened One Night: Frank Capra film starring Clark Gable. Has some really great writing to it and some very well worked comedy elements.

I'll add more as I think of them.

A few random documentaries worth watching:
Jesus Camp - terrifying account of a fundamentalist Christian group. Insightful and scary!

    +1

Watched this the other night on your recommendation, and you were completely right! Give this a look people - here's the imdb link.

Check out these 2 great gang films set in New Zealand:

Once Were Warriors http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110729/ and the sequel What Becomes of The Broken Hearted which, although it differs, does definitely not disappoint http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0197094/

I don't see what the big deal is with Jesus Camp. Watched it recently enough and found it pretty poor. Of course the topic they're dealing with is interesting and terrifying but the documentary really didn't hold my interest too long.

I thought Religulous was very good.

I've been meaning to watch it again, but I found it very chilling when I did watch it. It tells the story, without forcing the negative connotations onto it - these people are just ****ing nuts, and the directors capture that. In contrast...

Religulous has to be looked at as a comedy. It's an awful attempt at a documentary - I don't agree with any of the people being interviewed, but Maher goes out of his way to insult and troll them. It's entertaining, but it isn't a good way to make a documentary. It's more a farce about religion, but it's a bit too in your face about it. This coming from an atheist :pac:

It's considered something else? I laughed the whole way through...the copious amounts of alcohol that I consumed may have had something to do with that, but I remember enjoying it anyway!

Yeah just in comparison to Jesus Camp it doesn't fare well as a documentary about religion. As a comedy, it's pretty funny. Just not objective or fair in the slightest, with very manipulated editing. Good for a laugh though :)

Just watched Religulous, was pretty good but not very credible due to its editing. I got a few laughs out of it though:)

I wish i read this before watching it years ago! I thought it was supposed to be a doc. It was somewhat entertaining but in no way would i recommend it.

I'll add Jesus Camp to the list :)

Watched a bizzare film last night called Lars and the Real Girl

Film about a shy young man who orders a sex doll off the Internet and strikes up a delusional relationship with her and integrates her into the small town society that he lives in. Have to say it is funny, very strange, and actually turned out to be quite a nice movie.
he doesn't have sex with the doll... it's not plastic porn

Documentary? Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life.

Watch Gladiator. One of the best films out there, IMO. Has it all and then some. The acting performances from all the actors, but particularly the Oscar-winning turn from Russell Crowe and the spoiled brat of Joaquin Phoenix, are stunning. Ancient Rome is captured brilliantly, and the combat scenes are second to none... And yes, I am watching it at the moment!!!:D

Bit late in the night so I imagine you don't want anything too taxing. Watch RocknRolla, it's a riot. :)

Anyone who likes their documentarys has to watch Promises. If you have any ounce of emotion in you then you'll be in tears towards the end without a doubt. Easily the best documentary I have ever seen.

Second to that has to be Capturing the Friedmans - a fascinating and worrying true story about a family in the US accused of child abuse.

And third would have to be Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father which I believe someone on boards mentioned and prompted me to check it out. Yet another true story that is both heart-wrenching and engaging.

Hey anybody have any recommendations for recent foreign or asian cinema.
Not a fan of french cinema. Like the Japanese and Korean stuff. Like the Takeshi Kitano , Twilight Samurai, Kurosawa's stuff...etc stuff myself.
Or Korean film like Memories of murder, Oldboy (hated Bakwi), Nowhere to Hide, The Host or Tale of Two sisters.

    Anybody got any good suggestions?

Have you checked out the back catalogues of the likes of Chan Wook Park (such as JSA or I'm A Cyborg), Kurosawa and Kitano? There's plenty of great films of theirs outside the better known ones. Kurosawa particularly has loads of hits - I've been as impressed by the likes of Dreams (one of the best looking films ever made), Red Beard and Yojimbo as I was by Seven Samurai, Rashomon and Ran!

Lots of good Japanese dramas released recently too. Just watched Still Walking the other night, Osu-esque family drama that's very impressive (on that note, watch Ozu :pac: Tokyo Story is a masterpiece). Departures one the best foreign film Oscar a year or two ago, a stunning film about a musician working in a funeral parlour with a superb soundtrack by Joe Hisashi. Tokyo Sonata is another fine music themed Japanese drama from a little while ago. For something very different, 20th Century Boys is an ambitious trilogy and Japan's attempt at an epic blockbuster. It's bizarre and occasionally meandering, but a compelling eight hours or so, with lots of ideas and social commentary about contemporary Japan.

Plus, classic Japanese cinema is always worth checking out. I watched the Life of O-Haru by Kenji Mizoguchi a while ago, which is a masterclass in cinematography and Japanese melodrama!

One of the worst movies of the last few years. To even mention it in the same breath of Gladiator is preposterous.
