One of the worst movies of the last few years. To even mention it in the same breath of Gladiator is preposterous.

The normal cut is indeed terrible, but the directors cut is basically a completely different film.

The cinema version is indeed, its an incoherent mess, but the DC is a stunningly good film, story arcs are resolved, the plot is better, the characters get more payoff.

so yeah, its better than Gladiator ;)

I haven't seen the theatrical cut, but I really enjoyed the Director's cut. A saga of epic proportions :pac:

The DC is the one that I watched. I turned it off halfway out of sheer boredom.

Or Korean film like Memories of murder, Oldboy (hated Bakwi), Nowhere to Hide, The Host or Tale of Two sisters.

A Bittersweet Life and The Chaser are both exceptionally good films.

Just watched The Woodsman there and thought it was fantastic. Anyone have any suggestions for films like The Woodsmen?

+1 I totally agree the DC is way better. its like two different films!

Saw Munich the other night. Definitely recommend it. not too gone on the ending though.

There's not many films like it really. Some other films dealing with the same subject matter are 'Little Children' and 'Happiness'. If you haven't seen Happiness yet, it's really great, one of my favourite films of the last 20 years or so.

'Little Children' was raved about when it came out, but I thought it was crap.

Oh, and 'Bad Education' is a spanish film by Pedro Almodovar along the same lines that is very good too.

I'd also have to jump to the defence of Kingdom of Heaven.
Really enjoyed it, has some amazing shots in it and I really loved how it looked.
The scale of the film is just fantastic.
Orlando Bloom shouldn't have been cast, but other than that I can't really fault it.

    • Haute Tension (Switchblade Romance)
    • Rec

    • L'Interieur (Inside)

    The Hills Have Eyes
    House of 1000 Corpses
    Devils Rejects
The Orphanage (more of a psychological thriller)

Most of the better recent ones have already been mentioned. Would definitely second quite a few of them - Rec is one of the tensest horrors of recent times, while Audition is an experience (read absolutely nothing about it before you watch).

One that hasn't been mentioned is the excellent House of the Devil. It's the best 70s/80s horror that wasn't actually made in the 70s/80s, and was in fact made in 2009. Cheap, creepy, carefully paced and a wee bit demented, it's retro fun that shows up most of what passes as horror these days.

This is quite a specific request, but I've just seen "12 angry men" for the first time and now would easily put it as one of my favorite movies. The narrative of having the entire film in almost one location is fast becoming my personal favorite. "The man from earth" is another I love for this very same reason, and I think "Resevoir Dogs" would qualify as well, except being set in a warehouse instead of a room. Can anybody recommend me any other films set almost entirely in one room or location?

Ive just seen this request now. It takes place mostly in an apartment exvept for the few opening scenes. If you want to see the classic of this genre you have to see Rope. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040746/

It has the added attraction of being shot in only one or two continuous shots! Virtually unique in cinema.

PS Dont watch the trailer on youtube as it totally gives away the ending.

In the Loop is a genuinely laugh out loud recent comedy - spin-off of the BBC show The Thick of It (which I really must watch). One of the few recent comedies which goes above and beyond being merely amusing. Scathing political satire, but also full of the best coarse language and crushing insults you'll hear on screen :)

Four Lions is another fantastic recent one - you won't always be rolling around the floor laughing (although there are some very hearty chuckles to be had), but brilliant and intelligent comedic take on suicide bombers. From the guy who did Brass Eye on Channel 4, which you should totally watch if you haven't (all available on 4oD).

Always fall back on the classics too, although you've probably seen a lot of these. Office Space is great, a weird and funny workplace comedy from Mike Judge. Can't have comedy recommendations without mentioning two of funniest films ever made - This is Spinal Tap and The Big Lebowski. Both well known and again you've probably seen them, but just in case they've passed you by :)

    Good recommendations.

Haven't seen Four Lines but remember seeing a preview for it at kick-ass. will check it out.

What about some American 80's (or not) high school / college / underdog types?

Heathers (80s) and Election (90s) would be two of the better, subversive high school comedies. They're both pretty dark (especially Heathers, which gets pretty, well, murderous) but also very, very funny - sending up the stereotypes that dominate many films in the genre. As someone who actively dislikes the John Hughes brand of high school comedy (barring the glorious Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which is just too fun to dislike), I really enjoyed both. Not a film, but Freaks & Geeks on TV is pretty much the definitive high school comedy/drama.

The best 'all set in one room' movie ever made is Rear Window, in my opinion. One of Hitchcock's best, and therefore one of the best from anyone. Rope is great, but Rear Window is sublime.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047396/

And I think Rope wasn't actually done in only 1 or 2 shots - it was just made to look like that. If you watch the film you can actually see where the cuts are - the camera zooms into somebody's back to disguise the cut.

I saw a program on it once - Apparently Hitch wanted to do it without any cuts, but gave up after a while, since the technology wasn't advanced enough. He did only use around 8 shots though - still amazing.
