In those photos, the new columns at the old uncovered stand side are MUCH taller than the old ones. Anyone know what the story is with those?

They're totally unlike the old stand columns.

There's a new covered stand going there so it will need different columns to support the roof.

Surprised this wasn't linked already, article about new stadium or more importantly the lack of a centre of excellence due to all money being poured into the stadium.

Good point re all the other underused stadiums in Munster.

Munster doesn't need another 40,000 capacity stadium.

Munster doesn't but Cork does. Cork has always had a stadium with a capacity for at least 45,000. Why should we loose such a piece of infrastructure because of bad investment decisions elsewhere. Cork is the only location in Munster that has the population, economic base and associated commercial opportunities that can justify such a stadium.
Anyway bit of an academic debate at this stage.

    Anything but.

How is the stadium progressing now. Any pictures?

I would take issue with stadiums with 25k+ capacity being built in towns with populations smaller than Douglas (Thurles, Killarney and Ennis) rather than building a stadium in an actual city.

Wouldnt knock the rural towns. It is far easier get in and out of Thurles on a match day through many rural roads than to get into Pairc Ui Chaoimh. The Gaelic Grounds in Limerick was also a nightmare prior to the Shannon tunnel. Croke Park is surrounded with public transport and Ennis to be fair has a modest ground in comparison.

In the UK many new stadiums are rezoned on the outskirts of cities but that doesnt appeal to fans. Therefore there is merit in small towns

Actually you make a good point. The GAA is uniquely protective of their stadiums (is their any other sport globally that bans other sports from being played on their grounds) so the benefits of having a stadium in a city are negated as it is only going to be used for one purpose anyway.

Except that this isn't true and the stadium is down to be a world cup 2023 venue if ireland gets the world cup.

So it will be available for Munster games during the winter when it is lying unused?

Making it available for a handful of potential games in 7 years time isn't exactly opening up. As the GAA showed recently in their refusal to consider letting Connacht use Pearse Stadium or McHale Park in Champions Cup next season, they're not for changing.

Wow, is the whole ground going to be knocked and rebuilt so? Probably not a bad thing tbh.

The location of PUC isnt ideal in terms of outside travellers. Its in a Cul de Sac. A new stadium off the motorway would have been better but I suppose the other side of things is that local businesses may not benefit in such an event. Surely though, they could have built a new ground near Glanmire on the outskirts of the city?

Unless you count American football of course which is fine for some reason. Bunch of hypocrites.

Yet the GAA didn't see the irony in using Wembley back in the 60s and 70s.

Realistically there are very few businesses close to PUC compared to those close to Thurles or Croke Park. Closest pub to PUC is the Venue or Temple Inn and that is a nice walk

A cork publication moaning about 30m being spent in Cork. I presume by the tone of the article that it be split up across the country instead for grass roots funding.

I wonder did any of the Dubs complain when Croke Park or Landsdowne Road got public funding. The mind boggles.

Id imagine there extending the terracing back further, money isnt there surely for roofing?
When did they change to putting a new roof over the north stand? That was meant to be done with steel taken from the south stand, not that it would have been much good anyway.

The other roof was unusable. Unsurprisingly.

Surprised that the pitch is still there!

Looks to be taking shape so. Thanks

Appears as if they diverted the water around the back of the terrace
