So I read about saorview today on aertel, So what exactly was done today, as many of you are aware many of us were getting the trial already, was the rest of the transmitters just switched to transmit saorview as of today?

The press releases indicate there are 24 transmitter sites active for today's trial service launch, probably the same 24 that were active yesterday, last week etc. RTÉNL has not published the list of active sites.

    What happened today
    - new Saorview website launched http://www.saorview.ie/, www.rte.ie/saorview
    - Dept of Comms press release http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/Press+Releases/Minister+Ryan+announces+switch-on+of+Digital+Television.htm
    - updated RTÉNL website http://www.rtenl.ie/saorview.htm
    - updated BAI website http://www.bai.ie/licensing_digital.html
    - lots of Google News Saorview reports http://news.google.ie/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=en_ie&hl=en&q=Saorview
    - possible failed attempt to launch TV3 on Saorview
    - those viewing the Terrestrial forum exceeded those viewing the Satellite throughout the day (doesn't happen too often)

other than that it's the same service we were receiving on Thursday - the day before the trial service launch.

I don't think anything has changed.

Except it now officially exists and has its own website http://www.saorview.ie, that is a slightly incomplete copy of http://www.rte.ie /saorview/

TV3 may launch on October 31st because of that thing that says "All SAORVIEW channels must be available to 90% of the population by October 2010".
Do not fear, TV3 will have to show soon. Take a look at my spoiler above...

But TV3 according to their licence should be on ALL the sites TG4 is on. On Analogue. In fact they won't pay and are not. The Regulator accepts the long excuse that they are negotiating.

i'd wonder if the service is going to improve now, or is it still going to be the same crap shown on the telly. i surpose that it is going to be good for sports fans, as i am not one of them.

I don't see it improving for at least another 3 months till it gets nearer to launch. Then TV3 will HAVE to be on DTT whether they want to or not.
2 English channels simply won't do since they've put it on Six One. At least wait until everything is all ready. RTE News Now is a copy of the one available online!

Have you seen the licence conditions? I asked previously and no said they had.

If they were to be on all sites why was their licence renewed in 2008 for up to 15 years?

Same reason NTL didn't lose licence in pre-UPC days for fluffing rollout.

Same reason a Mobile Company didn't lose Licence.

RTE NL only have to make the system available for TV3. There is unlikely to be any legal requirement for TV3 to actually take it up by any particular date, or ever.

But they were penalised 2 years on their licence and TV3 get rewarded with a 15 year licence.

I'm just wondering from reading this if most have you have only now tuned your television for DTT but I've had my samsung tuned in since the service started when it had TV3 on it. Has everyone not being using the service already regardless of it being just launched

Most posting here regularly over the years have been watching the engineering test transmissions, myself since DTT launched locally in Mar 2009, others since the engineering tests started in Aug 2008. Some were even part of the 2006-08 trial. Might even be a poster or two who were involved in the late 1990's testing.

Now the transmissions on the rolled out transmitters have moved into a public testing phase posters are expecting at least a duplicate of the analogue service. Many are disappointed TV3 is not there at the start considering it was included in the various press releases. When it does launch on DTT it will exceed it's analogue population coverage by at least 5%.

I rarely if ever use the analogue button on my Sony remote these days, last time probably Jan when Mullaghanish went down for a few weeks due to the bad weather.

The green button / Saorview EPG function appears to be testing again at the moment. When activated, it hangs with the Loading ... icon via PS3 / PlayTV. Can anyone with a different setup / iDTV get the EPG to load ?

Is it not appalling all the same how our masters treat us: they told us that TV3 would be on the digital service by the weekend: it did not happen and they do not feel obliged to give any explanation or any indication as to when it might happen. Really arrogant behaviour.

And it is not so trivial an issue: my wife watches some programmes on TV3: because it is not on digital, my digital set top box is unused: couldn't be arsed having my wife call me to change the input on the tv, when she wants to watch TV3.

What is it with women and TV3? Most of the women I know are more intelligent and more thoughtful than 99% of the guys I know - yet they invariably want to watch this channel full of unmitigated ITV ****e, X-Factor, straight-to-DVD movies and DORT accents. We can't get TV3 here in Crosshaven (some parts anyway) so I'm between two minds about whether or not I want it to appear on DTT. Wonder if I can quietly make it a 'blocked' channel or something.....:)

TV3 carries a some of the main soaps and that Ireland AM programme so that is why alot of women like it. It also has the X-Factor

Like if it were up to me I'd ban TV3 as I think it is pure crap and instead fill the airwaves with a mix of thriller and explosive movies, diy and making stuff programmes and an several stations dedicated to boobs and Lucy Pinder.
Men and & Women have different tv tastes! TG4 is crap also however those weather girls.....

Have to agree with you , although it does'nt seem to bother some people that
the national broadcaster on the 6 o clock and 9 o clock news, tells a bare faced lie. If TV3 was to be on this weekend and its just technical issues ,then why did'nt they wait a week till TV3 was on before announcing the Trial. This kind of arrogant treatment of people who pay their wages is just typical of RTE
They could of just told the Truth, but why tell the Truth when its easier to lie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

The Truth is that TV3 won't let themselves be on it because they don't want to pay their way.

There's nothing on TV3 that can't be seen either on ITV or on their catch up service on tv3.ie.

Frankly I would not bother with TV3 and give your missus ITV 1 HD instead. If she has to watch Martin King or some other TV3 muppet then she can watch on a PC.

If the reason given by RTÉNL to byte & channelsurfer2 is correct the blame appears to lay with TV3.

The various press releases indicate TV3 will be there, the TV3 schedule appeared on the epg and the channel name changed from RTÉNL to TV3. They are one of the stakeholders in this project who would have been involved in the preparation for the launch.

The question is if everything was in place why did TV3 refuse to give permission on the day of the launch to be carried on the trial service? The dual charges issue doesn't seem to be the problem if RTÉNL were ready to carry TV3.

Taking a shot in the dark here but this has the smell of Onevision's failed commercial licence bid about it (TV3 being a shareholder) not to mention TV3 being removed from the engineering test transmissions almost 8 months ago during the negotiations.

As we've has no official response/release from any source can we assume discussions are continuing?

Jackie is on TV3 tonight and you wont see the likes of her on TG4 or ITV HD, thou i say she'd look fabulous in HD:D

I still think RTE have a neck to say TV3 is on Digital when its not.
