    Hi,
Was wondering if anyone has heard any discussion/rumour as to when we can expect to see RTE Player available?

    Nothing from RTÉ.

we'll need a comparable comment from eircom that they are upping peoples bandwidth limits, your average 30gb monthly allowance won't last long streaming video all night

those getting NGB will at least have some hope with 250gb..

sorry if this is off topic, but it is related to the rte player question

Why is there so little channels for it, bit annoying upgrading from analogue for the sake of an extra 3 or 4 channels, uk has loads of channels on freeview, soarview is looking like a major embarassment

Comparing us to just the UK is too narrow. If you compare us to DTT services around Europe we look pretty normal minus a pay DTT service, e.g. countries like Holland, Sweden and Norway only carry a few free public channels - everything else is encrypted and subscription. Even in many parts of Germany only the PSB channels are available locally via DTT (maybe 7/8 channels), the free terrestrial commercial channels deciding not go DTT nationwide.

Portugal launched its DTT service last year with just the 4 national channels, pay DTT failed to launch there. It was a direct replacement for the analogue service.

The extra channels a pay DTT service would provide isn't a viable option here because it wouldn't be able to compete with either Sky/UPC or the free overspill channels from the UK, both freeview and freesat.

With both Saorview and freesat/freeview channels available to us free I think we are spoiled for choice compared with many other countries around Europe.

The saorview rollout is not completed yet, more channels may come along. Analogue coverage in this country for many people was crap, the switch to digital is a major improvement for those same people. There are financial gains by switching to digital too - http://www.siliconrepublic.com/comms/item/18559-ireland-to-reap-a-500m-dig.

IMO The service is not an embarrassment, the fact it took so long to actually get up and running is somewhat embarrassing but that is not a reflection on the service itself. There are some aspect to it that need correcting like the Mount Leinster CH45 problems.

The expectation that some people display here are unrealistic. We are a small nation/population, we are not the UK. We have access to free UK channels via satellite so we are actually spoiled for choice.

Am I missing something here? http://www.rte.ie/player

Or are you talking about access via MHEG, like the BBC "Red button"?

Think RTÉ Player talk may be in relation to 'Project Canvas' now Youview (www.youview.com) I've emailed the broadcasters regarding it, youview and digisoft an Irish crowd that do similar. After that it is up to them. Of course the broadband issue is no doubt a consideration.

    It's just a replacement.

When 625 lines started it only had ONE channel. ITV and BBC1 still on 405 lines.

Then for a long while after colour added, only 3 channels. Some people never ever got and never will get Five on Analogue.

We have free satellite for 45+ decent UK TV and 20+ decent Radio out of 200+ free TV and 70ish free Radio. Any UK TV on PayDTT, if it ever happened, and didn't go bust inside a couple of years, would be PayTV. Boxer only added 1,000 new PayDTT customers in all of Sweden in the last year.

UK Pay DTT collapsed and "top up tv" is barely viable.

Ch 55 now fired up on Maghera. Channel line up a mirror of Ch 48. Signal quality & strength poor.

Now that the Dept has launched a public consultation on New RTÉ Service Proposals perhaps that thread could replace this thread as a sticky now that the consultation has moved the discussion from content speculation to content consultation.

The RTE HD test was off for awhile but is now back showing an RTENL Philips test card with tone. Can we expect something new on this channel soon.

My guess is that we will see something soon on the channel that was being used for the HD loop. Possibly RTE1+1 or RTE JR, I don't suppose, it's being got ready for 3e ? As a new channel has switched on today, flagged as HDTV on the EPG and they are not going to have two HD channels, you would guess that something new is about to appear. However, as we all know, things move very slowly, in the world of Irish DTT !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 336 ✭✭Damomanye

now have RTE NL with trest card SD and another RTE NL with usual HD test card..:D

    EDIT
The HD one is gone again.

17 services in total now. RTENL (SD) still there and RTENL2 (HD) now back again after a rescan. New channel soon I wonder?

EDIT: RTE News Now is transmitting Euronews at the moment.

I had a few instances of severe pixelation last night and one instance of total signal failure. Signal strength was not an issue, so I assume the additional channel overloaded the mux and caused the problems described.

At some time yesterday the RTENL channel became two SD channels and then one HD and one SD channel. Is it a coincidence that pixelation occurred?

On a scan of Ch:48 (Maghera), I've noticed that metered quality levels were below the usual average. Today the HD film loop on RTÉNL2 HD is perceptibly less sharp & is quite "grainy". Are RTÉNL pushing things too far with all the stuff they have on one mux? I read on someone's post re how many MB'S each mux can carry & how much each channel will use, can't remember where tho.

the quality for rte NL 2 looks better and clearer than the SD channels currently but not as sharp as it was and there is pixilation on occasion...i dont have any figues in regards to stream rates at the moment so i am just going on what i see :)

Thanks Crush. 1 HD, 6 HD channels and MHEG5 + RTÉ's radio network. Looks like No. 1 mux is full at this stage then with only 0.05mb left to spare.

Signal dropped three times for me this evening on RTE 1 even though I'm getting 100% strength and quality. Thought it might have been the wind at the time, but the aerial is solid. Maybe they are pushing the mux too hard.

there are two public muxes and 2 commercial (which are kept for anyone willing to persue pay tv via BAI agreement) as far as i am aware - i am sure they will add more muxes as they go along if needs be and plenty of spectrum - there are 8 or more in the uk at each transmitter i think (need to recheck the latest figures to be sure)

so capacity at teh start might be a problem but it wont be too much of an issue i feel once the service is fully operational in Q2 of 2011

In 2006 we were allocated 8 national UHF layers (multiplexes) and 1 national VHF layer.

The 8 UHF allocations included the existing 4 analogue allocations. Until ASO only 4 are available for DTT with the remaining 4 becoming available once analogue ends.

The Broadcasting Act details how the allocations are used
    - 1 PSB and 3 Commercial multiplexes until ASO
    - 1 PSB and 1 Commercial multiplex after ASO
    - 2 multiplexes for for non-specific / future services which could include DTT
    - additional regional layers if spectrum is available

Since 2006 the Digital Divdend has developed and removed 9 UHF channels (72 MHz) of spectrum from TV broadcasting by the start of 2013.

In the UK 6 UHF layers are available from 80 sites with 3 from a further 1,000+. Layer 7 and 8 are planned from approx 98 sites and will be auctioned by Ofcom in due course but not specifically for DTT use.
