Got this Double Dragon from Kerbdog, bit dusty but played fine without no sound.

Whole heap of new caps and a new processor (68A09) brought it back to life :) Oh gave it a wash as well :)

    New supergun design?

Looks different to the one I got off you :)

Ya its a cheaper more basic version of the one you got. Only supports mono boards, Megadrive pads only etc..

I see. Yeah that one i got off you is really cool actually. And all the pad adapters I got come in handy from time to time.

Just ordered one of these bitches for the upcoming iCade mod:

    JA0178881_celco_celco_circles_c68_template_clear.jpg

It has the all important 30mm circle for the Sanwa OBSF-30 buttons.

It should make enlarging the iCade's holes much easier and more accurate having the guide in the form of a drawn circle.

Handy thing to have for any arcade modders.

Was watching Tested 's videos last night on building their own custom cocktail cab. Its in 7 parts and nice to see it all come together.

Dissapointingly though they never uploaded the final part where they actually play the cab so its a bit of an anticlimax!

Anyone know where I could get an original mega drive power supply, or a cheap replacement that doesn't involve cutting wires?

Been coaxing Ciderman's Colecovision back to life recent. We've gone from totally dead, too playing blind, to this garbled mess.
Lots of faults but interesting to work on none-the-less and making some (albeit slow) progress :)

What's the actual problem with the Coleco?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,719 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

Well so far I've found two bad ICs (VDP, DRAM), 1 shorted and 4 open traces. One of the original RAM chips looks to have badly overheated and scorched the PCB, its also quiet fragile as well doesn't take a lot of heat before the traces start to lift.

Its currently running with DRAM from a Commodore so I know the chips are good so need to check the address logic - all the sprite data is good and displayed in the correct places but the background is all over the shop.

Imagine all the learning you're getting working on my Coleco!
Seriously though, it's not looking good for it, is it?

Wow, not a well console at all is it? How can so much go wrong? Or is it a case where if one component starts struggling, it puts pressure on further components down the line (a bit like a monitor chassis)?

Ah should be fixable I think, we're most of the way there now.

I've only spent about 2 hrs actually working on it so not beaten just yet :D

The original RAM was real old nasty technology, needed 5V, -5V & 12V to operate correctly AND had to be powered up in the correct sequence or would fail. Judging by the marks on the PCB one of them cooked pretty badly so sank a lot of current possibly causing damage to the directly connected VDP as well.

Its old and crusty (no comments about its owner :D ) so a few failing components can be expected I guess, probably should check the caps too...

That is impressive work, i wouldn't know where to start.

I have a question relating to crimping tools.
    So i have these: http://ie.rs-online.com/web/p/products/7205946/
    And these : Molex

Do i need a special crimping tool? RS recommends one that is €221 that i wont be getting. http://ie.rs-online.com/web/p/crimp-tools/0450391/

Is there a cheaper alternative or a workaround way of doing it?

    Thanks,
    Ed

I use one of these crimp tools for the various KK, JST, NH connectors I use.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,780 ✭✭✭eddhorse

Thanks, pricey for a once off.

Looking closely at that makes me realise i have something similar and used it at the weekend to strip cables.

EDIT bought that one for €36

Funny you mentioned crimps, I just received some jst crimps and matching xhp2 housing connectors in the mail this week.
Going to use them to do a solderless icade core mod making the parts easy to replace in the future.

I've been using this cheap and cheerful crimper all along and its served me well, commonly known as a dsub crimping tool:

Wow, that's a really big crimper!
It's like the device I have for lopping branches off of trees!
    Epic!!!

    Speaking of crimping

I told a lie, I actually received the crimps themselves this morning and they're the wrong type!

They should be the SXH-001T-P0.6 shown here in this listing:

    http://m.ebay.ie/itm/191545554137

Instead they're 9mm in length and have no clip at the back to lock into the housing.

    Pics here:

The front of them remind me of the statues on Easter island.

Hopefully the seller has the correct ones in stock.

They do look like Easter Island statues.
