Those youth defence ads scare me.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Complain about them then - there's a thread on tLL with details.

    Bunch of absolute muppets tbh.

The word "scum" is overused but honestly think this is the best way to sum up Youth Defence. They're violent, homophobic, fascist thugs that care less about protecting "babies" than they do about controlling women. I'm 100% pro-choice but even if I was anti-abortion these people would make me sick.

Interesting thread on AH, would you call your OH your "Partner", "Boyfriend", "Girlfriend", "Wife", "Husband/Hubby", "Spouse", "Other Half", etc.?

Personally, I'd call mine my "partner". Maybe it's because I'm not yet and and not 100% comfortable with sexuality, but calling my OH "boyfriend" doesn't stick well with me just yet.

I call my girlfriend my 'other half' usually. Girlfriend sounds a bit silly and partner sounds odd imo.

I'd be the total opposite. I'm not really out but boyfriend wouldn't bother me. I don't like the word partner though. It seems so formal but I get it if you're going out with someone for years and you're older it's more serious sounding than bf/gf.

What I don't get is when married gay people say partner instead of husband/wife though.

I call them a figment of my imagination, were I married/ in a long term relationship I'd say partner, girlfriend doesn't convey serious and wife sounds possessive.

So how was pride people? I missed out this year.

I call my OH many things... ;) If I know the people she's my girlfriend, if it's a bit more of a formal thing she's my partner, and occassionally now my fiancee. :D We've been going out 8 years though...

Pride was really great, it was my first time marching and it was brill. Lots of support for everyone, and the guys in my group had a blast. I was marching with a group for people with extra support needs (intellectual disabilities) and it was a massive deal- we're only a new organisation, and supporting gay people who have ID is a bit dodgy, technically it's illegal for them to have sex at all, so it's a bit fo a grey area for most services, hence why we came into being.

Here's some pics I took during the day...

^That's our group, I'm in the back with the flag and the cheesy grin. :D

    211183.jpg

^The guys from BelongTo looked awesome!!!!

^The party in Merrion Square afterwards was great.

    How is everyone?

I am reading 50 Shades of Grey.

My god, it is the worst book ever. I kind of wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I am also not finding it terribly kinky, although perhaps that says more about me than everyone else... :o

    Anyone else reading it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭Captain Graphite

No but yesterday I was reading #IrishShadesofGrey on Twitter, which I'm fairly sure is more entertaining! I even had one of my suggestions retweeted *beams proudly*

They refer to it as Girly porn, I'd imagine that it doesn't translate easily to the mr grey character being a woman? I haven't read it obviously but my other half found it interesting. I don't think it's going to win any literary awards for great prose, it's just mills and boom for the Internet generation! Seems to be a bit marmite though!

Never really gave much thought to reading pornographic literature, but I'm intrigued and am wondering are the books worth all the hype.

On another note. Got a job last Wednesday and lost it again the next day. The company failed to use foresight when dealing with potential contracts and I got the chop. Myself and the Technology Officer were both left red faced at I was lined up to manage both the technical support desk and network infrastructure. Otherwise I'm having an outstanding week.

So I guess I'll post in the Off-Topic thread :-), get it on my "Followed Threads" list at least.

Socialising. Yay! (digital still counts, right?!)

Um, so, hello! :) Just back from a week in south Florida. Beautiful, HOT. Enjoyed the heat for the week but never been so thankful for some grey sky and mid-teens temperatures!

@baby and crumble -- both my sister and my mother were reading that over the holidays. Talk about a soft-porn cross-over! At least I'm going to assume it's soft. Very soft! My mother is reading this for gods sake! I'm going to retain my innocent notions anyway, and stay well away from the inner pages :D

I want to read 50 Shades of Grey just to see how awful it is but I don't want to put more money into the author's pocket. I don't have anything against fan fiction but writing Twilight fan fiction and then changing it just enough to publish without getting sued is bad enough without it being terribly written.

i keep seeing that picture doing the rounds - the one with two women reading 50 shades... and the caption 'women are too classy to watch porn, but they'll read the f**k out of it'
which is funny but very innacurate.

now i hear the story is very tame porn too - im in no hurry to read it. not because it isnt naughty enough but i never liked mills and boon type stuff. I could barely stomach twilight.
I read other books by that author and all of the female leads are self sacrificing, weeping and because it has to be emphasized: self sacrificing twits (cant think of a nicer word). I gained a new appreciation for Kristin Stewart after reading the other books.

I'm currently living in Lanzarote on work placement and while I do want to try reading some Spanish books I don't care enough about 50 shades to bother trying to translate the bits I don't understand. Also I don't think any new vocab would be very helpful. :P

And thanks for the offer gcgirl but I don't own either. I prefer reading physical copies anyway. That said if I'm ever in a position to afford an ereader (my current wages are ****) I'll jump at the chance. I tried to bring so many books with me but most got dumped 'cause they weighed too much. :(

Why so? I had never heard of it untill a friend told me had joined it as a way to meet women!

Is there nowhere selling books for tourists? I'm in Spain atm and came across 50 shades in the English section of the nearest bookshop.
