now i have a kit lens 18mm-70mm but the max ap is 3.5 so there will be a big difference

stupid question no doubt but whats the difference between a 50mm 1.8 and 500mm 1.4.

and why is there such a difference in the price.

    do you mean 50 1.4?

if they are both 50's the 1.4 lets in almost twice as much light, it has a larger aperture and bigger glass, its more expensive and complicated to make.

actually of course you mean 50! if a 500mm 1.4 existed it would need a truck to carry it!

it goes like this 1.4,2,2.8,4,5.6,8,11 and so on
each value upwards lets in half the light as the lower value. 1.2 is the lowest you can usually get and they are very expensive, at least 1000euro, or 400euro for an old manual slr lens

there are f1.0 lenses, a canon ef50mm f1 costs 3000euro or more, they stopped making them a while ago. a leica 50 f1.0 costs maybe 5000euro

a manual 50mm f1.4 will usually cost you 70-100 euro on ebay
a manual 50mm f2 or f1.8/f1.7 will cost you 20-40 euro on ebay

the aperture value is usually written as f/1.4 or 1:1.4

if a zoom lens has f/4-5.6 written on it, it means at the widest angle the aperture is f/4 and at the longest it is at f/5.6 so a 35-80mm f/4-5.6 lets in twice as much light at 35mm than it does at 80mm, so you almost always have quicker exposures at the widest focal length of a zoom lens than the longest, if a zoom lens says f/4 it means its f4 at every mm value in the zoom range, they cost alot more and are heavier, f/2.8 zooms will cost usually twice as much as f/4 and also will be heavier

I just felt like typing, hope some of it makes sense

:D Well, there are at least two threads dealing with nifty fifties.
In general, 1.8 is the absolutely cheapest lense you can get from Canon. Build quality, plastic lenses, motor...
But it is a prime, therefore it mandatory has to be better than standard kit lenses. Especially with aperture 1.8 you cannot get from most of the available zoom lenses.
1.4 has USM motor, glass elements, better built quality and overall superior.

If you are surprised by the price gap, check the price of 50/1.2L :p

the 1.8 doesnt have any plastic glass/elements! only cheap disposable 35mm cameras or holga/lomo fun type cameras use plastic in their lenses

I am sorry, it feels like plastic.
By the way, my decent Pentax 28-70/4 has plastic lenses, but absolutely no lens flare, even with the sun in the picture. It is not about material ;)

Just to mention the 50mm f/1.4 from what I read it's not as sharp wide open as the f/1.8 is,The USM motor can break and people say you should leave the lens left in infinty MF when not in use and all for 3 times the price..

After reading that I've decided to either get an f/1.8 or not bother :pac:

^^ while lookin/gooooglin about 50mm's. I came upon this forum responce (http://photo.net/pentax-camera-forum/00G2pd) and after reading it I ended up buying an M 50mm f1.7, quite cheaply on the Bay, they are built like a tank and their resolution is fantastic. I had been tempted to 'splash' out on a f1.2 but...........no !

Phew ! Luckily I already shoot Nikon ! If I didn't then on the basis of your well argued and informative post above then I'd almost certainly switch ! On the other hand someone told me I can do much better with Sony, how would you feel about that ?

Looks like we are the third most popular forum, if that is accurate?
