Going off topic I learnt a new thing about my camera yesterday............. I discovered what the 'Bulb' setting was actually for. Yay. I was wondering how people were able to take 100+ second exposures when the longest I could select on Manual setting was about 30secs, so I googled the model number and long exposures and there you go.

I only have it about 18 months and I'm discovering new things. :o

I wish Fergus well and happiness in life both online and off. While I liked the standard an quality of his work, I'm quite surprised that he has lasted this long after his last holiday. Other than the last week or so, I have found his posts to be quite angry and argumentitave.

From what I have read here from the mods, there seems to have been quite a lot of housekeeping going on to keep Fergus happy. In my opinion, if your spending over half of your online time attending to one poster, this takes the enjoyment factor out of it. They don't need this crap. None of us do.

Its jusy a pity that Dk couldn't have learned a few lessons from AR. From what I heard he was like a raging rothwieler, foaming at the mouth when he was younger. Just take a look at the little puppy now, well tamed :D

I have been away for some time and have no particular opinion on banning policies on Boards.ie.

Perhaps a short term ban, with the option of returning with a clean slate would be one option?

It could happen to a bishop...

Yay! My hard disk is starting to make grinding noises :)

    Why am I happy????

Well I just backed up every photography which hadn't been previously backed up earlier today when Eircom broadband went bandy on me.

So, that's something to be happy about.

Surprising about 5 years ago, my opinion would have been weighted completely in the opposite direction ;)

I was banned from LL for in thread mod discussion! But was told the way to question decisions was via PM. The world has gone mad.

*off to look at the rule book*

I have a suggestion to make on this banning business.

If a person continuously gets up the mods' noses they could be invited to simply
post photos to a "Salon des Refusés". A thread just for photos would
mean that we can continue to enjoy their work and that there will
not be a sad aftertaste, where everyone feels nervous and wonders
    if they might be next.

I was banned for life from a forum for "giving cheek".
Several years of people effing and blinding finally
got to be too much so I did a sort of Jomo Lomo
run with a thread, just to see how far it would get.

The ban was lifted many months later, but they
forgot to remove the "banned" sign.

People who know me in person goggle when they
hear this story. I have never even been asked
to leave a room during my long life.
The internet is not always a subtle place...

Since AnCatDubh is leaving as Moderator here, I would like to say "Thank You" for all his consideration and help.

A thread of commerative photos, perhaps, to cheer him on his way?

If they are posted here, they will remain as a sticky and never get lost...

    Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?????????
ACD will be sorely missed, was always impressed by the patient, even-handed and informative guidance (I severely lack these qualities), quite aside from the friendly and inspiring contribs with the civvy hat on.
Good luck with the next chapter of your life AnCatDubh!

    Long live ACD____C !!

The things he (allegedly) did to get the 'money' shot......

Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, 'Let's go.'
The pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the photographer instructed the pilot, `Fly over the valley and make low passes so I can take pictures of the fires on the hillsides.'
    'Why?' asked the pilot.
'Because I'm a photographer for Boards.ie,' he responded. 'And I need to get some close up shots.'
The pilot was strangely silent for a moment. Finally he stammered, 'So, what you're telling me is . . you're NOT my flight instructor?' :D

    ......to change a lightbulb??

1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light
bulb could have been changed differently

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs

1 to move it to the Lighting section

2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section

7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs

5 to flame the spell checkers

    3 to correct spelling/grammar flames

6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to
    condemn those 6 as anal-retentive

2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"

15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb"
    is perfectly correct

19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this
    discussion to a lightbulb forum

11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs
and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum

36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy
the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique
    and what brands are faulty

7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs

4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected
    URL's

3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this
group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group

13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all
headers and signatures, and add "Me too"

5 to post to the group that they will no longer post here because they cannot
    handle the light bulb controversy

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about
    light bulbs"

1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 3 months from now and start
    it all over again.

    Seen over on fredmirandas.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭Anouilh

17 to start threads about the reputation of lightbulbs.
Many more to wonder how they can get a higher watt bulb for the same price

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,009 ✭✭✭KarmaGarda

20 to start an argument about whether or not there is a copyright infringement on the usage of the particular light bulb mentioned

1 to mention the word Paedophile because the bulb was only 2 months old

Anyone see any advantage to Ricohs new camera which seperates the lens and sensor from the body?

No, I'm actually really confused by it. Okay, if they can get combinations of lens and sensor packages that address the market demand, and there's some huge cost benefit to it then yeah, otherwise, no.

What'll happen is that they'll release a few lens/sensor packages, and one or other bit of the combination just won't suit. I mean what they have there at the moment, big sensor, but its a long lens. I'd like a big sensor with a wide lens. Maybe that'll be an option in the future, maybe it won't, but that would stop me from buying it.

Now if they had a seperate lens AND a seperate pluggable sensor package then I think you'd have people salivating over it. As it is they've taken the two most expensive to make bits of the camera, and made them the interchangeable bits.

Yes and nothing very good about the prices quoted as far as I can see

    • Body: €459
    • VF-2 viewfinder: €249
    • GF-1 flash: €269
    • A12 50mm lens: €670
    • S10 24-70mm lens: €370

    A12 is the large sensor
    S10 smaller sensor

Maybe it would be a way to insure that a very good lens has a sensor that does it justice, but buying a new sensor every time you want a lens just adds extra cost:confused:

If nothing else, how on EARTH can they justify charging that much for the body ? It has neither a lens NOR a sensor !

Yeah I think that's probably in part the thinking behind it. Whether or not its a success remains to be seen, I have a suspicion its going to fail, and probably bring ricoh down with it ...
