It's the biggest project in the west of Ireland,I have an interest since the media coverage has been so poor to date

Media coverage is poor on all infrastructure projects, not just ones in the west.
They are announced and then that's it until they are opened - unless of course they run into problems.

Just saw this elsewhere, this is a complete non story. Basically a Clare TD asked Shane Ross when the motorway would open and the official line of early 2018 was given. Nothing here we didn't know in 2014.

March 2018 my a*se. Shane didn't even read his notes correctly! It's clearly not going to take another 18 months considering some parts are nearly at final blacktop layer.

Shane Ross is starting to come across as one of the worst ministers of any kind in living memory. Total and complete joke. Been in the job a few months now and has no idea what's going on.

He should have a chat with Sean Canney

some places are blacktopped & look driveable, but some places are still at rockbreaking stage, consider the workers will be going on short time when the time changes at the end of the month for 6 months, it looks like it could be accelerated, but is there any incentive to do so?

    Yes there is.

This project is a stupid PPP. Why stupid? Because the consortium that builds the motorway borrows the money and then charges the government a premium in annual payments. This is an "off-balance sheet" and expensive way for the government to borrow money for infrastructure, when it would be far cheaper for them to borrow it directly. But then we can't 'cos ... /rant

Anyway, the consortium has borrowed the money to build the motorway, but won't get any payments in from the government until the project is finished. The quicker the payments start coming in from the government, the sooner the consortium can start re-paying their loan.

    So that's the incentive.

I've noticed the traffic in the mornings on approach to the Coolagh roundabout has been mental lately - every morning backed up at a standstill to the fence at the airport. When the 17/18 opens, any thoughts on how this will be affected with extra traffic from the Gort and Tuam directions?

During schooltimes, yes - but then the Gort/Tuam commuting traffic will start jumping off a junction earlier and using their old approaches.

There isn't much anyone can do until the outer bypass is ready.

It will be ready to go around 2019 unless the planning funding is revoked.

Anyone's guess as to when it begins after that. Gort-Tuam went to tender in 2009 remember.
