yeah thats correct kevin , she had gone completly rotten in the middle , perhaps where the conversion was done , but dad said the guy from dublin loaded her up and took it for nothing , would be very interested to know if he ever managed to salvage any bit of her , shame really to let it rot like that , especially with it being so rare and an original irish car , even if the reg itself was saved , but there was no real value left on them back then , the damlier hearse ( SEI 1 ) is in storage we believe awaitnig the return of the only surving member of the foleys undertaking buisness , he now resides in australia ! im trying to locate it and see if i can get a few photos of her before she disintegrates too much. :):)

The p5 doesn't look like it was extended in the middle, but I guess it would have had lot of hacking around done to fit the rear section.

Came across this informative site recently relating to DS420 hearses
    ( http://www.myds420.info/hearses.html#Startin)
It has pictures of the DS chassis just before it was sent to the coachbuilder for hearse conversion.

    279041.l.jpeg

    279042.l.jpeg

    chassisdrive.l.jpeg

And an advertisement for Startins from the mid 1970s
    funeraldir.apr75.startin.l.jpeg

The four door lowline is something iv never seen before. As is said on the site, it would make a pretty good looking estate car.
    Another version from Startin below
    startinF.2.l.jpeg

(if the pictures dont copy over click the link to see them)

    startin.2.l.jpeg
The most important hearse coach builders for the DS420 were:
    • Woodall Nicholson
Woodall Nicholson has traditionally served the high end of the market. Apart from Daimler, they converted Rolls Royces as well. The company is based in Bolton (Lancs). They have merged with limousine builders Coleman Milne.
    • Thomas Startin
Based in Birmingham, Thomas Startin was another famous hearse builder on DS420 chassis. The current successor company (Startin Motor Group, Worcester) is not involved in hearse production anymore.
    • Eagle Specialist Vehicles - Wilcox Limousines
Eagle, one of the larger hearse coach builders in the UK, is also based in Westhaughton, Bolton (Lancs). Main distributor was, and still is, their sister company Wilcox Limousines of Chalfont St.Peter (Bucks). Before 1985, Wilcox manufactured hearses under its own name.
Eagle Specialist Vehicles as a hearse builder should not be confused with one of the largest American hearse builders Eagle Coach Company, formerly Hess&Eisenhardt, of Amelia (Ohio,USA), manufacturer of hearses on GM and Ford chassis (Cadillac, Lincoln etc.).

HIK 700 was owned new by Lt.Col. Rowland M. Byers.
It was originally black and shell grey.

Pat Gleasure ended up with this car at some stage in the 80's.

Judging from the people walking beside the hearse it was Michael Gaughan's?

Looks like you are right if you google image it. Why were the people a giveaway?

And to bring things right up to date with a Maserati Quattroporte, though its got the same awkward look as the opel insignia job.

Although this angle is a bit more flattering.

It is, its a sort of Hearse you could take to a vintage show and it wouldnt look out of place. Some more pics of it from a previous thread by him.

Never dreamt there could be such an interest in Hearses, but sure it makes sense reall, there were plenty of them and well kept for ages.

Now whats the wee blue yoke beside the A55 during its restoration? I have made a guess but it might be stupid. Someone will know.

Looks like you have a good bit of work ahead of you! Have you started work on it?

It's a shame to be cutting her up she doesn't look too bad for a Daimler.....

i got the hearse to take away but had to buy the limo to do the conversion

It's a shame to be butchering them though, the sad thing is unless you're very dedicated I doubt you'll finish it tbh.

Why do you need the limo for the conversion? So many of these cars have been banger raced, would be good to complete it.

    Eerie!

I have a few pics of the inside of the building and they are properly eerie, didn't want to post them as they are non-car pics.

    Pics not working
you have to be signed into the bangers to see them:mad:

I nearly bought an old cortina hearse about 15 years ago i had cash in hand and everything but the guy wouldn't sell it to me because i worked for a circus, he said it was disrespectfull
when i told a friend about she said i was crazy and "imagine how many people have died in it" so i pointed out she was living in a converted ambulance and way more people have died in her camper than have ever died in a hearse, she didn't get it

and that reminds me, i spotted a funky looking green hearse in tullamore last year, i have a pic somewhere, i go looking for it now.
i have some photos of a cortina hearse part striped for a banger

thay are also building this princess limo in to a banger

Princess limo is a rare motor, not the first to have been raced though. Does that Cortina have a manual box in it?

the princess photo was taken only a few months ago but the cortina photos was taken around april time i think he was going to put a engine and box from another banger in it so it will be manual now
i have better photos of the cortina from the side view i will post them up in the next few weeks i just need to find where i have put them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 betty2

Nice one and excellent work GD3, have you a clearer scan of that page?

I know of an '84 Canterbury Cortina Hearse but the owner wont sell it, they are based on the MK5 Cortina P100 pickup with a 4 speed manual box strangely, and an ugly old hearse to boot... I must try and get some shots of it for the thread. Sadly i think it will be baled, if it hasnt been already.
is the hearse still there and do you have any photos of it there can not be to many left now

there has been alot of peopel looking into this hearse i have been told a323jnd was the only one that anybody knows of i also understand there were very few made i also wish you the best of luck if you do still investigate the one you know of

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

There was very few made alright, probably because they were based on the ford P100/cortina pickup and were very awkward looking also. Built by Canterbury Coachbuilders.

i needed the limo for the flat roof and the small front windscreen, a good bit of the work has been done, the hearse engine was seized so i rebuilt the limo engine, here's a few photos of all the holes that had to be filled and a photo of the chop!

hi no i am only looking for spares things like windows and stuff that was made just for the hearse i found that the rear window is the same as a mk 1-2 fiesta so i am ok for that 1 and the back lights are the same as a mk3 escort estate but other parts could be hard to find if i ever need to replace them thank you

It's easy enough to cut the glass to size tbh, i've done it many times so I wouldn't be too worried about it. Credit where credit's due re. the customised Daimler, it's very rare to find such dedication!!
