    Not only that but the guy who builds it is some @rsehole, I was at a show last year looking at that particular model hearse and couldn't but notice that the build quality was, to say the least questionable, he was on me like a spider when he knew I was after spotting a few "problems" and proceeded to rant and rave that if I could build a better hearse then go ahead, I just replied to him that he was the one who was putting his shoddy workmanship out there for all to see and I know if it was me I wouldn't have put the hearse on show unless it was properly finished off, pretty poor show by all accounts, he could have just said something along the lines of it being a display model only or something.

    Lots of things, joints not finished properly, wrong type chrome/stainless trims used in the extension, rubber seals not fitting properly and general fit and finish all around in general.

    Tis,but you would need a mile long propshaft otherwise! Also the rear track is much wider too,so the car would look silly in RWD.

    I often wonder how they get these cars designed,do they sit down with a computer,or just slice up an insignia hoping for the best?


    One factory I worked in did a full size drawing of the hearse before starting to build it. Then as it was being built small changes were made to the design. The limo was a different story, it was taken in, cut in half then pannels made for it. At the start they didnt know if they could actually finish the job. From what I can remember it took about 9 weeks from it was stripped until it was driving out the door to go to a show in England. These were all Mercedes E Class, and brand new.

    Thankfully we never had one come back with serious side damage but had one come back with a major frontal impact. The middle doors opened and closed perfectly but the front and back ones were a bit tight. The car was fixed and back on the road.

    There have been many books written about hearses but these have all been primarily about models built in the USA. So we felt it was about time the British hearse had its own coverage.
    The pictorial history of the British hearse starts from wheeled biers & horse drawns right up to the present day. This is not just a ‘Mourning News Special’ but a proper book with over 200 pages and 500 pictures telling the story of how the styling of the hearse has changed.
    Originally we set out to produce just 100 copies in August last year, but these sold out within months. A further 150 were ordered & we now have NO copies left.
    We are now collecting material for a second edition & also on Irish built hearses if anyone has anything they would like to share with us please contact us.

    Just seen this thread,My dad was!! an undertaker.I must have a look and see if I can find any old pic's of his hearse.All I can remember is the number plate began with IT..(scared me because of the film!!)lol

    Car was from Leitrim so,and pre May 1972. Some scanned pics would be great.

    the history is a bit sketchy at the moment , from what we can gather it was imported as a pick up from the states in 1952 and hand built into a hearse , another pick up was subsequently brought from the states later on to act as a doner for a spare engine , this was then buried in the bog by a hymac !!!:mad::mad: "IT" has been lying in that shed for nearly twenty years till we dragged her out ! sadly the engine and spare engine are both siezed but we are trying to free them out at the minute !:D:D

    yeah sorry i should have mentioned that ! "IT" was converted to right hand drive when it got to these shores , a nephew of the man that owned it is trying to track down more old pictures of "IT" and maybe some history .

    I posted a pic of this Mercedes before. After a bit of research it turns out its first owner as a car was An Garda Siochana, Pheonix park. It was tax exempt untill 1981. Im not sure when it was converted to a hearse though.

    If a car is registered to Phoenix park does it mean it was a comissioners/high ranking officers car car? Or do all Dublin Garda cars get registered there? Im thinking second option.

    It's just an ex-ministers car, that's all, usually sold at auction because of high miles etc and bought cheap and converted to a hearse. Lots of ex state Mercs ended up as hearses for this reason, now they're usually imported, converted and VRT cleared as a hearse and commercial rate of 50 euros.

    It's still alive anyway according to Cartell.ie. Iirc Pat Gleasure converted one of them back to a car some years ago, maybe it was this one?

    here is a bit of an update on "IT" , The engine is still siezed , we have tried everything to free it out from parafin , diesel , coca cola and brute strength and a lot of ignorance !!!! next try is dynamite i think , anyway here are a few pics of "IT" !!!!!!!:confused::confused:

    No,not the same car. That track looks like Nutts corner,and it is an irish driver that raced that one. Probably the same coachbuilder,Duffys or someone like that.

    This is why i didnt put that pic up with the original pic of the hearse. I didnt want to stir up any controversy,when you said it was converted back then i thought it might have been the same car.
    Edit..i see the different headlight set up now.

    This has cropped up before regarding the same undertaker who seemingly converted ZJ1 back from a hearse to a saloon Austin Sheerline which not only would be a crazy thing to do it would also be uneconomically viable!

    ZJ1 belonged to the managing director of Lincoln and Nolan. It was a standard Austin Sheerline that was eventually converted into a hearse.

    ZJ1 was sold with a rolling shell so I think it was more a reshell than an actual cut and shut job. As far as I can remember Pat Gleasure converted quite a few hearses back to cars. I can remember seeing an older Rolls from the late 40's that was converted too.
    Well I suppose nobody wants an old hearse but lots of people would want it back as a car, especially if it was a Rolls or something rare or potentially valuable.

    ZJ1 was abandoned in a field for many years before it was converted into a hearse around the early seventies and was used as a hearse up to about 1980 and converted to a car in the early 80's.

    There is a black and white period photograph taken of ZJ1 outside the Ever Ready garage in Donnybrook that I wouldnt be surprised if it was somewhere on the interenet. The photo has turned up printed in mags over the years.

    I have one, only of the front, at Jack Doyle, the boxers funeral somewhere if I can poke it out and I think there's another one of it in Cronins bar in Crosshaven. I'd be interested in seeing one of it myself, it's a long time since I saw here in the flesh. She's black and yellow now as far as I know, like this one.

    The one in the picture is a very nice car, ZV reg'd.
    It was operated for years in Dublin as a wedding car.

    I know of only 4 Sheerlines in the country.
