hi,wow i bought a dodge coronet a few months back and it was also a hearse,i was told dat there was 2 brought in to ireland around 1952 but thru the years changed many hands, yesterday i just googled hearse pick up conversions and up pops the sister car to mine, iam turning mine in2 a pick up as all the back end was allready cut off. how far are you into the build or would you maby sell the dodge

The last I heard of it it was on e-bay for sale by the owner who was having financial difficulties and I believe it was bought in Ireland. If you e-mail Sandra in the Classic Hearse Register, she might know more about it.

I'm going to make it my buisiness over the Xmas break to go and investigate. I do know it has been officially scrapped though.
hi have you had any luck on the hearse yet?
i have now got a coffin bed and found some windows . I was told thay come out of a cortina hearse but it seems now i have taken alook into it myself the late cardinal windows fit the early type aswell . So thanks to my mate sending me down the wrong path looking for cortina ones i have wasted alot of time it seems the back window is something else and so are the rear lights do you have any idea what the lights are from? the early ones had the granada estate type but mine are long and go upright

Have not called to that yard yet, but the side windows from the scrapped Nicholson are still around allright, surprisingly. Also that hearse had MK2 Escort rear lights which looked a bit cheap and downmarket on it.

Its not that one, though is exactly the same as it, right down to the hubcaps. See what i mean about it being a pig ugly thing, all out of proportion. Canterbury must have been building them for half nothing to say funeral directors were buying them.
    This is A323JND
    Canterbury Cortina 1
    and
    Canterbury Cortina 2

This Canterbury was also pictured in a feature in Classic van and pick up a good few years back, its because of that article that the guy who has the one i know of thinks he has a car worth a fortune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

The vehicle details for A323 JND are:

    Date of Liability 03 03 2001
    Date of First Registration 01 09 1983
    Year of Manufacture 1983
    Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1600CC
    Transmission On the stick
    CO2 Emissions Not Available
    Fuel Type Petrol
    Export Marker Not Applicable
    Vehicle Status Unlicensed
    Vehicle Colour BLACK
    Vehicle Type Approval null

You seem to know your stuf on hearses so i will ask you on my hearse i have a air pump under the coffin bed and clamped ontop of the osr wheel arch are thay standard and what if i remove it cheers

That pump is for the rear suspension, i think its tied in with the rear shocks, to raise and lower the vehicle afaik. The Nicholson had one fitted. It will probably drive ok with out it.

HIK 700 was owned new by Lt.Col. Rowland M. Byers.
It was originally black and shell grey.

Pat Gleasure ended up with this car at some stage in the 80's.

    be silver in color?

Any one else see the picture of a hearse passing some building in Dublin I think, looks like something American, the reg number is clear enough too, i'll scan it later if I think of it.

One 1984 Caterbury Cortina as promised. Its actually in a pretty bad way now that i have seen it again as its been outside since around 2003. Even the chassis legs underneath are flaky looking. Its possible to see where they built up the hearse body on the pickup sides under the vent behind the passenger door as its all coming apart from rust and they also seem to have extended the rear of the pickup body with a fibreglass section. Seems mostly complete and not past restoring even if the rear deck is full of scrap. Note the 5 stud wheels also and it has a manual 4 speed box, unusual for a hearse.
I can hear the banger boys licking their lips at this one..
    cd222303.jpg?t=1294054230

Does anyone know for sure how many of these were built?

Another couple of Irish hearses, MFI 172's gone to the crusher though..........

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

MFI 172 came from Castlemaine in Kerry, it travelled a long way to Kings Lynn!
Ironically it was through this forum that the undertaker that owned it sold it and two other Granadas.

Thats a fantastic photo of TYI248- A '59 Plymouth Belvedere hearse, assembled by Summerfields on Lower Baggot St.
I have a '59 Plymouth limousine, Irish assembled. Very few left now.

I take it that you mean it was originally assembled as a car by Summerfields from CKD? Interesting to see how the fins were left on it when it was converted to a hearse. Wonder who did the conversion?

There was so many unusual hearses built in this country.

As far as I know, they were built from 4 door pillared saloons, possibly by Ryans in Ringsend and judging by when the pic was taken built when new. I have a pic of one I cant find right now.
The were a mix match of parts when assembled from CKD.

    Hi all
Been sat in the background just watching what goes on...and the stories behind the Canterbury which incidentally was not built by Canterbury coachbuilders or Coleman Milne!! I am in the CHR and noticed that Ali Babba has posted a page out of the club newsletter showing the Mk4 prior to it being raced... are you a club member? if not guess you know a member to get the page from? and twas a nice pic of the Plymouth, there is one like it in the Irish hearse book that the CHR have produced (don't think its out until February time)..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

Welcome to boards HEARSEMANUK. I know theres a good few Hearse enthusiasts lurking on this thread, occasionally coming out of the woodwork like this.:p
That Irish Hearse book hopefully will be a good one, it will be interesting to see how well it covers the subject, because no one knows for sure whats what even over here with all the various cars and coachbuilders over the years. Lots of unusual stuff coming out on this thread.

    Hi Ellisfunerals
You seem to know alot about the Canterbury, did you own it way back then? However I don't think you will ever see that particular one on the road, not from what I have read elsewhere...
Hi carchaeologist, chatting with Sandra & Dean of the club, I know they had major problems in getting Irish material as no one wanted to share much, certainly the funeral directors. But I do understand that it shows a good representation from horsedrawns, through vintage and upto moderns..and at the end of the day thats what funeral car enthusiasts like me want to see..it doesn't matter if specific details are ommitted, they tried and have produced a book that no one else have done. I cannot wait :)

This is true, im very surprised that its even been done. Maybe when people who have information see the book, they might be more forthcoming with stuff.

    Hi all
Just a quick one before I vanish for the night. I know they have not gone to print yet so if anyone has anything they want to share then maybe they should contact them at the club address secretary@hearseclub.co.uk they may be able to add anything in?
The Zody indeed went to Scotland and that is it in the picture swiped from the CHR club mag..and after the race, yes it was no doubt crushed.
Perhaps Ellisfunerals could share what they know regarding the JND hearse? and hi 'mk1 gran'; if you or anyone come across a decent -but not hanging or costing the earth - Irish built Mk1 Granny hearse then I know Sandra & Dean at the club would be interested! Most I have seen have been raced or totally rotten. see ya

All copywrite of CHR of course, a taste of what might be in the new book. I remember the Jaguar hearse at an auction in Kilkenny around the early 1990's.

Oh I'm sure they won't mind, just that there was no mention of where that page with the bangers had come from so in that sense they would not have been acknowledged and no one would have known :) What hearse do you own anyway? I not got one at the moment :(

not alot to share regarding jnd it fair amount of money spent on it and was road ready around 2006 due to some problems at around that time it was put into dry storage but as it wasent local no one started it or even saw it for some time i dont think its worth saying anymore about how the car is now i have been told its a banger now and after reeding what some have said on some chat sites it looks like some have made up minds and i do not want to ad to the ever growing stories on this car i am glad another one has come to light and think it would be good to see some one save it or even back in the funeral trade plus it mite cut down the amount of emails and stuff i get asked about jnd
