Zips are fine as long as they are quality. I've Castelli tights with ankle zips and they're fine.
    Wouldn't worry about it.
Just get the material right (cold weather stuff if you choose) and size right and you should be fine.

I'm considering buying a pair of the Pace Roubaix Bib Tights.
Alot of the reviews on the site flag that the ankle zips knock off your shoes as you cycle & also come undone.
    Have you experienced this too?
I would like to stick with the DHB brand as my DHB Finchdean bib shorts are a very good fit!

I noticed they were knocking when I was walking around before heading out, but when I was out on the bike I had booties on so they weren't really free to move.

In fact, I would always be wearing some kind of overshoe during the winter so this won't be an issue, if it bothers you then you now know of a cheap solution.

@ Raam, Nice! Do you know if theres much of a difference in the xl and xlg in the Assos stuff?

I have an Assos Element 1 jacket in XL and want to get an Airjack 851.

My own jacket is perfect on me but I am unsure on wether or not to go a size up for the Airjack in case I need to wear a good few layers underneath?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

Try here for size diffs: http://www.assos.com/en/63/sizing.aspx
Since I am neither XL or XLG I can't really help you, although I will say that all my Assos stuff is large. I'm tall, but very skinny.

If you are in Dublin, go to the cyclesuperstore and buy it there.

I really don't like ASSOS shorts. However I love the ASSOS Airjacket.
If Scott of the Antarctic was wearing an Assos winter jacket he wouldn't have died in a tent.

Btw Cycle Superstore don't seem to be stocking Assos any longer.

Pretty much. I reckon that the MALE model grabbed the wrong leotard.

The iceman cometh (winter that is, not me):

DHB Pace Roubaix tights with pad (I give them a 9/10 - super warm, great fit but like Hail 2 da thief said, the zips knock around making some irritating noise, get booties)

    dhb-A0088-aw110ps-med.jpg

DHB Merino 190 Base Layer with zipneck (Again 9/10 - not cheap but quality is first class, super warm and great fit - might be cheap compared to other merinos?)

    dhb-LS-Mer-zp-190g-ad-med.jpg

Mavic Razor 2011 (7/10 - Needed new shoes for commuting, love my Mavics so went with these, nicely made but not much different to my 40 euro shimanos except for more secure locking):

    56215-2.jpg

I think that's all for now, I may need panniers if anyone has a recommendation for an affordable, waterproof set that can fit over a regular rear-triangle mounting rack. My World Cup 94 bag just isn't up to it anymore.

I have a pair of assos bibtights aswell and find them great, however I have a pair of giordana bibshorts aswell and the chamois is as good if not better than the assos!

I looked at the Airjack 851 recently and it seems fairly light, although it gets great reviews, would it be worth scraping together another few quid for the Fugu jacket?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

On the Assos airjacket. I wore it during the worst weather last winter over a LS jersey and winterbaselayer.
You won't need the Fugu in Ireland. Despite its lightweight it is warm and genuinely windproof.

@DirkVoodoo What's the fit of the DHB Pace Roubaix tights like? Being tall and skinny I get a range of recommendations from the Wiggle chart depending on which measurement I go for (waist, chest, height).

Go too big and I'll get a baggy fit, too small and the fit will be a little too snug in the crotch-to-shoulder dimension (which can really crush ones, erm, shoulders...).

I bought that too - from Slane Cycles who had the cheapest price I could find. My medium fits perfectly (apart from my previously diagnosed T Rex Arm Syndrome but think even that will be OK when stretched out on the bike). I thought black would be suitably low key but it is more bling than it looks in the picture. I look like a cross between a camp drug dealer and a 1980s ice skater in it. It's a good look for me though.

I bought it in red. It looks like Michael Jackson's Thriller jacket. Awesome.

    What you putting on it?

    I'm thinking:

    Campag Record
    Kysrium SL's (have cosmics)
ITM Vista stem and ITM wing shape bars
    Carbon Keo pedals

    Any idea yourself yet?

Hmm, that's almost exactly what i'm going with. I've most of a Record groupset already (07 levers), was thinking of Easton EC90 SLs, but with budgetary concerns becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, I've been leaning more towards the Kysriums. Going with speedplay pedals, Ritchey stem, not sure about the bars yet, every time I build/re-build a bike, I go through about 3-4 bars before I find one I'm happy with.

I suggest you buy unbelievably expensive bars, e.g. Zipp. Then you'll find them perfectly adequate and practically irreplaceable.

Sounds good. Must keep an eye out for ya!

Anyone have any suggestions other then Kysriums? Have Cosmic's so need a second set but very open to ideas!
