I was in London over the past few days with friends and we ended up chatting to a table of Yanks one night. They told us that it was their first time beyond American shores and were only too willing to ream on and on about their Irish Heritage. Eventually, one of them asked if it was not "dangerous for us to be here, what with the Troubles and all?" - I nearly bit off the rim of my Pint glass! It seems these proud members of the diaspora thought that the Troubles are some kind of pitched, conventional war between the British Army and the Irish Defense Forces (which is what they thought the IRA was) over the past 30 years for the North! We just played along for the craic and promised to send them an "Uncle Bertie Wants You!" Poster when the "War" ends and we can f**k the Ration Cards in the bin

meh, I lived in San Fransisco for 2 years. The ignorance of Americans is greatly exagerated, imo

    Much like our own stereotypes
san francisco is not america. they are a different breed there. and also the fact that it has a large irish community. try checking out a few more states to get a better idea. alot of them havent got a clue about 'overseas'

my sister in 6th year and a pretty good student: ''where is oslo, in germany?

the irish of all nations wouldn't exactly be in the position to insult the ignorance(and by god are they ignorant) of random americans.

i'm sure many americans could name many of their 52 states, how many irish could name the 27 EU states?

You were wrong with 54 states.

Youre still wrong with 52 states.

    Keep going.

ok, yes americans are stupid but we can't expect them to know much about a place 3000 miles away that prob isn't covered in their curriculum..

it'd be like them laughing at us for not knowing that mc donalds is actually good as a staple diet.

    Stop trolling.

Someone in my class in Uni was in mexico a few years ago when she bumped into your typical american tourist.

    American "Where are you from?"

    Her: "Ireland"

American "Wow, your English is very good"

    /facepalm

But its not just ignorance about the outside world, you be surprised how many americans don't even know what year 9/11 happened.

    I mean for **** sake. 9/11?

    Its pretty worryingly ignorant tbh.

So, Seven people, if I'm not mistaken. Any more, or is that all you can conjure up from a sideshow Aussie?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Cunny-Funt

My god, I was just talking about Americans I talked to online, I encountered so many that I actually thought it would be a great idea to make one of those clips like the other aussie one (where is North Korea, american points to Australia one) and the bastards beat me to it!!!!

    Damn it.

1st happened when I came online in 2DF which has a main chat room and noticed two americans (people I had chatted to before) debating what year it happened. (both had it wrong) Took me a second then I was like "WTF, are you guys actually debating what year 9/11 happened?" I spent the next 15 mins explaining to them how utterly astoundingly stupid it was for americans not to know when 9/11 happened. & how they made themselfs and their country look like fools. & they just didn't seem to understand. It was so dumb it was actually depressing.

Since then I often tested the odd american I got chatting to online, and to my dismay a lot of them just don't feckin know. I mean wtf.

Overheal ask people in your country and you'll be horribly disappointed.

    **edit**

just watched it, damn it again! They couldnt get the ****ing month? fecking hell...

Bit of a loaded survey with a rigged map tbh given he labeled Australia anything but Australia, among many other places on the map. I dont expect you to be able to point out South Dakota from memory either.

For all you know the person that answered that suffered from Dementia or Alzheimer Disease. Or was intoxicated. I doubt they had very strict screening methods for their "survey"

How many Irish vote for Fianna Fail again? Oh thats right, the Irish must all be idiots then.

This thread has been done to death, with the same erroneous arguments being thrown (Oh you re-elected Bush so youre all stupid). You're welcome to search through them.

    Ah .....irony.

The entire cornerstone of the Celtic Tiger was American outsourcing.

As the Irish continue to emmigrate to the four corners of the world after blowing the greatest economic boom in their history, they reach for someone else to mock.

Yes, if you can't eat it, drink it or fcuk it.....piss on it.

Give it a few years when they only industry in the country will be heavily EU subsidised farming and tourism. The Paddies that are left will be beggin' the Yanks to fly their airline and spend their 'yankee greenbacks' in Ireland.

Every nation on this planet has their fair share on gob****es. Do you really think that the Irish are immune to this ??

Read through the dozens of threads on these boards about the scumbags, junkies, skangers, and politicians that inhabit this mossy rock, and then have a long look in the mirror.

If that doesn't work, take an afternoon off (if you are actually employed) and have a walk through Dublin.

The streets are lined with geniuses.

Horses asses will always outnumber the horses in this world.

I probably should have just said 'Horses asses will always outnumber the horses in this world' and left it at that.
