    Pardon the mini-rant...

Earlier I was cleaning out my wallet, something rarely done, and found the student travel card I'd renewed last crimbo. So I logged into the site, as you do, with the login and password written on the card. Granted I should've done it last crimbo, but there you go. When I login I find that whoever had entered my details into the system clearly couldn't read the capital letters on the application form so I fixed them up and then went looking for the Change Password button. Which doesn't exist. Couldn't find it anywhere.

So I pretended to forget my password so I could get a reset password email and choose my own. Got the email, clicked the link, entered a new password, see a message that says 'Your password is reset successfully !'. When I try to log in with my new password I find that only the old one actually works. The one written on the card. I tried this whole rigmarole three times, entering different passwords (letters/numbers and letters/just numbers) and every time the same result, only the password on the card works for me. And just because it's the type of guy I am, I even tried in three different browsers, just in case it was a plugin affecting the way the (awful) site works. No joy.

So... if anyone happened, in the next 4 and a half minutes, to steal my card, they could log in to my account and find out where I live, my phone number, my email address... Not exactly ideal to have a person's login and password written on the ID card. Upon first login you should be prompted to change the thing. My only solution appears to be to change all my details to junk text.

Anyway... it all got me thinking, and then annoyed. I understand that the card is good for discounts on all sorts of things... but can anyone tell me why my actual, official student card isn't good enough to get student discounts with? I mean, my student card required a passport/birth cert to get. It's got my date of birth. It's got an expiry date. It names the college and course I'm in. Why do I require a second card that also says I'm a student?

    domain: studenttravelcard.ie
descr: Credit Card Systems Ireland Ltd
    descr: BODY CORPORATE (LTD,PLC,COMPANY)

That a private company, presumably having been outsourced by Dublin Bus and Iarnrod Eireann (since the back of the card says it belongs to them) have arranged discount deals with a bunch of people is one thing. But as part of their deals they've evidently assured that a person's actual real Student ID card, the one that proves you're a genuine student in the country, is not good enough to get a student discount in a bunch of places. It's a money racket. I don't like that I have to pay extra to prove I'm a student so I can avail of a discount. My actual proof isn't good enough because of a deal cut with this company to organise the whole thing.

Anyway. Maybe I'm wrong about the whole thing. But I won't be renewing this card. I don't approve. My student ID should be enough. Shops can't conceiveably be making much if any money out of the deal, so why deny real college IDs? Well... presumably a little advertising to students who are more likely to go to particular shops to avail of discounts they're otherwise find elsewhere. And that's the thing... whatever about the travel discounts, you can find better deals on any of the shop stuff if you look around a bit. It has to be a little bit of targeted advertising to us students.

A pointless mess of words giving out, but I wanted it out of my head. Damn them anyway. That company will get no more money from me. Even if it is just 12 or 15 quid. Hell with them.

tl;dr = studenttravelcard.ie sucks, needs a change password button, stealing our money for nefarious deeds.

The travel card thingy is just an annoying nuisance. As you said, our official student card should be acceptable. I have enough cards in my wallet without adding another one to the collection. Had it for first year and didn't bother renewing it as I only really used it on the train which I stopped using last year.

Speaking of Dopplegangers, I met Michellenman's doppleganger in Temple Bar on Friday night, except she was English. It was very, very strange.

Also met Russell Brand's doppleganger but that's not a story I want to go into. He made the real Russell Brand look like the kind of guy who enjoys a cup of Horlicks and some knitting at the end of a long day of bingo.

I'm not sure... but I may have seen Banquo on a train this morning. 9.19 from Drumcondraland to Maynoothville? I think it was Banquo. I'm probably mistaken. And I didn't want to say anything... being the antisocial freak of nature that I am.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

Was totally me! Do say hello :) groggy I may be, but I'm always up for a chat :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

Will do! Was thinking of asking if it was you when the train stopped... but you were fairly legging it, and I'm part of the (sorta)old-fogies-with-dodgy-knees-who-can't-keep-up brigade. We are numerous.

I didn't know you could repeat for a better grade, is this only a final year thing of because of the department you are studying within?

Oh, the buses. The glorious, douchebag drivers, too. All of it, glorious. FML and shove €35 up my ass, since that's how you like to treat people, to repay me for the cab I had to take to work.

Just had to get that off my chest. See you tonight, perhaps.

    One luv (n/a for busdrivers)

Dunno but I do know that banquo lived in Moyglare one of the years so he might know. There are loads of different Moyglares alright. Did you not view the house before taking it? You should probably go up and have a look for yourself!

In other news, I'll be living in rail park next year in a cheap, affordable bungalow mansion with a great location near to the college and various shopping outlets.:D

p.s. Can someone please tell me when the 2010/2011 timetable is available??
