At €1450 I think its too expensive to be in a bangernomics thread but what a car for the money. Maybe we should set a price limit ?

    Are those 2.0l Galants V6?

NCT expired 01-09 and "noisy" gearbox. Would want to be getting it for a lot less than 1450

If we are talking about buying, running and maintaining costs, and reliability and not too bothered about image, or too much comfort, my recession-buster would have to be a K11 Micra.

I think we have a winner. How wrong can you go there? It's just been serviced, NCTd and had the cambelt done. Can probably be had for €250 once you show a bit of common courtesy and respect to the current owner.

Surely this is worth an offer at about600:

Are you trolling? I don't want to offend eringobragh and in fairness that Primera is not a bad drivers car compared to other D-segment cars of its generation, but that's about the only pro the car has over other white goods like a Toyota Carina...

indeed, but it scores highly on the "...nomics" side of things. If it breaks, it can be fixed, and lets face it, if a luxobarge breaks, then it is bye bye (I know a guy who spent over €7k in 12 months on a 94 S Class replacing the autobox and timing chain)

I see your point but I'll counter your argument based on my own experience. Higher end cars can be built so well that things just don't break, so there is no issue. I've owned high end old BMW saloons for many years and I haven't had any serious issues that cost serious money. Or reliability issues for that matter. On the other hand, I have owned that model Primera when it was only a few years old with a low mileage and it was troublesome and unreliable.

    Hey lads....

I've been offered a 02 Pug 206 5dr with 50k miles on it for €650. Apparently it has a small bit of body damage on the rear quarter panel, but other than that its driving ok. Needs to be tested too. Hopefully i'll see it later on today, so i'll get a good look at it! No pics yet.

What do the experts reckon??! :D

Well, price is really cheap and 206 is nice car so why not, can you fix the body damage by yourself?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

See i havent seen it yet. I thinl i will get a chance to see it and drive it at some stage this afternoon.

Either way, im sure i could get the bodywork done on the cheap. Seems like a bargain, now if i only convince the missus the same thing!

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

I've done that type of project on a Scenic DrummerBoy. Quarter panels very costly. Surely the bumper and a bit of the boot could be damaged. The fact that it needs an nct i'd run a mile. It's a high risk for a low profit no matter what you do. From my own experience, don't.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,102 ✭✭✭✭Drummerboy08

I'll wait and see what condition its in when it comes in later before i make a decision.

It sounds cheap for the money, the fact that its out of NCT wouldnt worry me too much, only because i know who the driver is.

That'd would be bought for €2,750 and i'm sure there are cheaper one around. That leaves you with a 2k margin to take on the car, service it, what ever needs to be done for the nct, paying for the nct, get a quarter panel, getting that sprayed and fitted. Anything else that needs to be fitted/sprayed fixed. I've done 3 projects like this in my own time in the last six months (not all crashed) but you would be so suprised how easily costs add up.

€650 sounds cheap, always does. You could just be taking the hassle off them. Have a good think about it and add up figures before you do. You could have money tied up in it for a few weeks.

50k on a 206 is nothing. Make sure the boot floor is straight. Good panel beater will fix the quater panel, if thats all that needs fixing.
As Limerick man said, costs could add up, but people generaly run a mile when they see a damaged panel. Its really up to the condition of the car.

Really? How so? I've a P10 and only ounce of trouble I've had has been one alternator die. I know there can be issue with knocking suspension on them. As for the P11 My Dads owned a few and my uncle owned one since new and in ten years the only thing thats gone on him in the distributor (a few months ago). I suppose you can get a lemon in every brand. My friends brother got a beamer 5 series and had a fair few miles on it (can't remember how much) and had loads of issues with it and eventually traded down to a P12 primera I'm not joking! (But infairness he just through the beamer to the garage when it caused problems so thats gonna cost big money anycar you need to be willing to get your hands dirty)

    Anyway...

Mine was a P10 too (had to google this :D)

Alternator, battery and a few other minor electrical issues and the CV joints at about 50k miles

Right had a look at this yoke....

Its a bit rough inside, the steering was rubbery, the damage couldnt have been repairable - i.e. a new quarter panel, and the rear bumper was hanging off.

Pluses? Just been serviced, timing belt and water pump done 3k miles ago.

Decision? I aint buying it for myself or the missus, so i blew it out to a trader for €1300. Nice.
