Best thing I ever did was move my m50 account from eflow to easytrip.
    Have no problems now.

Well no as it is not a criminal offence not to pay. They say it is a civil matter but then muddy the waters with what they call "fines" which are only part of the criminal law system. They basically want the best of both worlds.

I find the whole toll business a bit of a pain. I phoned once to pay and the call cost me €5 ( 1890 number  from a mobile)

I dont live in Dublin so I only very infrequently need to use the toll. Now I avoid it at all costs.

Perhaps they should ask how many people avoid the toll bridge - because of the system used and if they want more people to use it perhaps they could make the system easier.

Like a freephone number to pay, or perhaps have a toll lane that people could pay in change ?

The money that the toll operators get from using solicitors is far outweighed by the numbers of people avoiding the toll because of the solicitors IMO.

I think tolls should go. The government needs to get socialist about this like it did the banks.

People are getting squeezed, the celtic tiger days are over and no one should be asked to pay tolls in this recession.

Ironically, there is a form of socialisation for toll operators. Look at the M3. If traffic doesn't reach the levels agreed then the taxpayers forks out. That de-risks things nicely for the operator.

Well put it another way, have there been any challenges in court where a person was successful in challenging Eflow?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,476 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Nothing has been reported thus far, but due to the fact that eflow control any propaganda about them I doubt any successful challenge would get any news space.

I travel over the M50 toll to work 5 days a week and it's nothing short of a money racket and a disgrace. Everyone pay's motor tax in this country yet we get charged to cross this toll an others in our country. The amount of cars, etc that do cross everyday id say they make a nice lump each year. Motorbikes are still getting away with it free yet cameras have being installed. If everyone refused and stopped paying the toll it would be interesting to see what they would do.

Buying out the M50 from NTR will cost €1.15bn (link)

Upgrading the M50 cost €950m (link)

Maintaining the road surface and other infrastructure, proving the free towaway service and lighting the M50 is another contract whose price I don't know but considering lighting alone was just shy of €1m last year, it's not a cheap contract.

The state made €104m profit from the toll last year - that doesn't even come close to covering the costs of running the M50. If people had to pay the true costs of it, the toll would be eye watering.

And despite the high cost of the toll, the recession and the rising unemployment numbers
The numbers using the M50 are up despite the economic crisis.May was the busiest month for the eflow system to date, a spokesman for the NRA said last night, with tolls levied on 3.5 million vehicles in 30 days.

    You weren't joking...

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/drivers-run-up-50000-debt-by-refusing-to-pay-m50-toll-2959888.html
A total of 420 people had gone to court to defend being asked to pay extra penalties, and most cases had been settled, the NRA added.

Hi guys, I was away travelling for a month and came home to a solicitors letter for an unpaid toll. My father did not realise that the tag in my car was not connected to an account as it still beeps when going through the toll.. Is there a way to protest this as I have always paid all my tolls??

Protest if you wish, but I can't see it coming to fruition especially when your father had your consent to drive your car. The onus was on you to inform your father the tag was not active.

Wow thanks for that PM Bond. I can't believe that didn't cross their mind when they were implementing it in the first place. The system would fall to its knees if everyone was to do that. There's just no way they can rectify that now at this stage.

Can you please pm me too. They are looking for 456.00 euros from me for 3 journeys! frankmulveen@gmail.com

Did you close the account? Get another tag? They will probably excuse the fines if you re-establish an account for the car your Dad is using with this tag and pay all of the tolls. I'd set up the account ASAP and then negotiate over the arrears.

I just got a letter from P&FG looking for 448 for 3 unpaid trips.I had tried and failed before to come to an arrangement with eflow..Said I could square up with the them next week ,but they said they could'nt wait..had to be that day.I was unemployed..and still am.I'm in penury so I can't pay what I don't have.

Is my best bet just not worrying about it y'think?

I mean..a trip to the slammer would'nt be the end of the world.Might make a nice change.

I found them very easy to deal with re a fine for a single journey recently.
Got a fine for 47 euros or so. Rang them and explained that I got no reminder letter and without agreement the guy put the words in my mouth that I was not used to using the road and wasnt aware of how it worked. He said if I paid 3.10 or so that he would cancel the fine.

    Thanks for replying.

Its very reassuring to hear that I might have the chance of encountering a being capable of compassion when I phone them tomorrow.

There is no barrier. I use post paid and my card gets charged at the end of the month.
