This Sparrow Hawk was around all morning annoying the Magpies, until these's two decided to join in, and I think they were sorry they did.

    Great shots
All corvids just don't seem to have any fear of birds of prey
Even my Harris hawk was knocked to the ground by a magpie came out of nowhere

Yeah, and most of the time the Bop's will just get out of there, but not this one, this time it was the Sparrow Hawk that was the aggressor, it kept diving on them. It was at it again today, Pigeon's, Jackdaw's,and the Hooded crow's were all scattered in every direction .

    The hoodies are dangerous lads
They will mob a bop as large as my Harris and common buzzard and will do damage to young bop that doesn't know better
Sometimes my Harris wouldn't come out of a tree if there is too many around
The bravest of them is magpies
    No fear at all

A nice visitor to the garden! I think it's a member of the thrush family? I'm not sure which one?

Looks to be a red patch on its side, so I'm guessing its a Redwing - a winter visitor that started arriving here in the last couple of weeks!
Looks a good bit darker than I would have expected though!

Love those cheeky, greedy birds - the starlings on the feeders above!

These redwing visitors seem to have arrived early this year. Is that a sign of a tough winter to come, I wonder. Am looking forward to seeing the fieldfares arrive. I have a cotoneaster hedge in my front garden, and they have come there to devour the berries, for the last couple of years.

Great Waxwing photos VBull, where did you see them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 719 ✭✭✭V Bull

@ Rainbowsend, saw them in the carpark at Liffey Valley Shopping Centre beside the VUE cinema. There were about 15 of them, most people passing bye didn't notice them right over their heads :p...

Fantastic photos. Are there enough berries around for them to hang around for a few days?

Yes, I would say so, a lot of Rowan Trees dotted about the car park to the front of the VUE cinema..

BTW V Moth, I saw your other post about the Waxwings being ringed in Scotland and to be on the look-out, I tried looking for rings on their legs, very hard to see as their legs seem to be short or tucked up into their bellies .. Dick Coombes of BWI also mentioned the ringing during his excellent talk on Birding last night in Newcastle..

The waxwings were definitely there this morning!(Thanks V Bull)

I've searched around for a specific insect thread but don't see one.
Can anyone identify this critter? Out of focus shot taken by my cousins missus. She said it was about an inch long and was on the door on the outside of house here in Donegal.I've never seen the likes of it.Maybe dragonfly larva?
