Not cheating, it's good to see and know what a Harris looks like so they can be ID, sometimes they go astray on their handlier I'm told.. Nice one..

Theres a few around Ireland that are now wild because they were never caught
England has at this stage wild Harris hawks wild bred
A lot go missin over there due to people not knowing about them and buying them
At her age she almost looks like a buzzard but at about a year later or more she will be a very dark bird losing her baby feathers

@ emo72, I have come across them in a few areas in the Park, the better area, I think, is the wood on the left as you enter Farmleigh..

    Hope this helps..

    Thats quite interesting
In my experience I've found Harris hawks and buzzards to be big enemys with my Harris trying to attack the buzzards and vice versa but to breed in the wild is pretty interesting
If you joined the international falconry forum and just watch the lost section everyday a falconer loses birds such as Harris hawks redtails goshawks and peregrines a lot
So it's no surprise they'll breed in the wild

I think you got mixed up between the Harris Hawk and Goshawk. The first two pics are definitely Goshawk, while the bird at top right in the last pic is an adult Harris Hawk.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Yeah first two pics are goshawk 100% 2nd pic looks like a finnish goshawk
Last two pics the bird baiting on the bow perch is a Harris easily recognised by its tail feather they have a white tip on the ends of tail feathers
    Where was this taken?

The really need to be controlled

The really need to be controlled

Not much point in trying to control them, except in areas where there are Reds or areas that border places that have Reds' or at the edge of their range!

There is plenty of reasons to control them
Whether there's reds about or not they not only ruin the reds but local birds and other wildlife get damaged
A big male grey will destroy nests and take young birds and I have seen them try attack a magpie nest with newborns.
They are vermin and doing falconry I will take a delight in seeing my female Harris take one
Not only will they take birds in the high trees but they will take birds in the bush aswell

Not having a go at you mate just pointing out the damage they do
