On the face of it, Moorhens seem like the most shy/placid birds on the river.
But apparently this time of year( mating season) - the males can become quite aggressive in protection of territory

Thanks keps, the sandpiper was a tick for me. The cuckoo must be the same bird I saw last year, exactly in the same location.

Have nesting boxes and a Great tit decides to nest in our postbox.

You need to put a notice on the box that it is not to be used, as disturbance is now an offence.

Just an aside, but it's illegal to photograph nests without a licence.

Deleted photos & have already told the postman Not to use the postbox for the foreseeable, looking for a new postbox now.

Edit Just to clarify didn’t realise there was a nest there until I opened the box, luckily postman hadn’t been so put a note on it.

The state of the world doesn't justify disturbance of breeding species.

Thanks thought it was a bit pedantic, would never be my intention to in any way harm any animal & just took the pic to warn the kids be careful when opening the gate as they whack the gate off the Wall When opening & if I just told them they would want to look so I took a pic in order that I wouldn’t disturb the nesting pair further. I then immediately put up a note & put out a box for post, didn’t need to be told by anyone, as fortunately for me I have a brain.

Not that I’ve to explain but I am not seeking to disturb & photograph nesting birds, just to clarify. Also sorry I posted now and wasn’t aware.

Was it caught by accident? If not, the timing is all wrong given that Spars are only starting to nest about now! :(

It was caught as part of 'general' ringing efforts, so not quite by accident but they're not frequently caught either. It's an area where Sparrowhawks don't breed, and I think it was a juvenile bird so not going to breed this year. Even if it was breeding though, it was released within a few minutes, so it wouldn't have had any impact on a breeding attempt.

In the two years that I've wandered along the Dodder - I had never seen a Pied Wagtail 'on' the water- until today!

This guy had all the antics of the grey- hopping from stone to stone - jumping in the air - but all on water?
