    How about this one?

    DSC00927.jpg

can anyone id this? Not entirely obvious to me. It was quite large, nearly as big as a pigeon but it was fluffed up of course.

Yes looks like a Sing Thrush to me. They really fluff up in cold weather.

if it is a thrush it's an amazing transformation, I actually had a Thrush in the garden the other day, a rare occurrence, so it's entirely likely

    Thanks.

I have 2 bird id books and looked it up so couldnt see anything else that it could be. I have had Redwing + Fieldfare this week which will probably never happen again. The joys of snow!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,796 ✭✭✭Isambard

I'd say it's a Thrush alright, another turned up, probably the same one, nicely fluffed and seconds later from another direction an unfluffed one appeared. I got photos but they aren't fit to publish

Saw plenty of the regulars in the garden over the last few days,

Chaffinch, Song thrush rather fond of the berries on the ivy, blackbird enjoying the remains of last years crab apples, a friendly robin and a blue tit.

Then there was a few more unusual in the garden and along the river, what I belive is a golden plover, a red wing, a fieldfare, a lapwing and some little Gulls. Also say some grey wagtails but I could not get a decent picture.

That is a Mistle Thrush. Keps I believe has a picture of a Song Thrush a few posts back and when you look at it it's much buffier colour then the mistle thrush which is a paler looking bird. Obviously bigger as well but when you see a lone bird size sometimes can be hard to fathom

That is a song thrush. Notice again how it has a buffer colour around the face and chest

Probably noting special but I kept this bird fed during the snow and couldn't tell what he was. If someone could identify from the bad phone pic I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

P.s loving the pics here, I've been looking through the last hour, and that inspired me to ask about my bird.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,324 ✭✭✭keps

To me it looks a lot like a Robin- except for the fact that I can't detect a trace of red on its breast

    Wait for better birders:)

My old eyes aren't what they were but the shape suggests Dunnock.

Sorry its a terrible pics. Much bigger than a Robin. Bigger than a starling. Very tame. The starlings would fly away when then seen me throwing out food but he/she would stay.

Your right though in that pic it looks like a Robin.

Just looked up dunnock and Seen they are Robin size, this was bigger than a starling, very proud chest that was a lighter colour than the rest of the body.

If it's bigger than a starling- then I'd suggest a Thrush
