Could it be a juvenile waiting for his front teeth tail feathers to grow?

Now that you mention it - the tail on that chaffinch does look a bit stubby

Here is another chaffinch with a 'standard' size tail

    I think it's just a matter of it being a post-moult bird.

A Common Buzzard, at East Coast Nature Reserve. It had been feeding on worms when I unintentionally disturbed it.
I was cursing the fact that it flew against the light, but then realised I might be able to get a shot out of it. Not perfect by any means,
but I'm pleased with the outcome! :)

It's been a while since I was here, with work and everything the months just flew by.
But I always made time on a Sunday for the little reds. So just a few of a few thousand photos that I have to sort through :).

This one would eat a little and then have a snooze.

Update from the farm. Mowed the corncrake meadows late in season (October). Unfortunately a lot of grass in iris cover patch had lodged, due to heavy fertilizer application and late mowing date. Removed most of lodged grass this weekend, with rake and by hand. Dead lodged grass would inhibit grass growth next year and corncrake dislike lodged grass. Yellow iris provides vital early cover when the corncrake arrive in Ireland. Last winter the iris field became too dry, iris need wet conditions to thrive and spread. This winter I have partially blocked the drain in that field. At intervals of 10m I have thrown in small bales of straw to slow down the water flow. The iris has flooded nicely (in photo) and should promote good growth for corncrake when they arrive back.

And this is their chick, which I have not seen in the last few days. It flew across the cleared forest on Sunday evening with one of its parents and as soon as it disappeared out of view there were three gunshots, but I'm hoping its in another field feeding on worms.
