I spotted this odd thing on the garden fence that did not seem to have a discernible head
By the time I had gone to open the back door it had flown
    Can anyone identify it ?

    A snoozing bird
    What breed is it ?

No idea. Not much to go on! Srameen might know.

I have a video of it but only in that position
Its head was tucked into its chest unfortunately it was in flight when I opened the door
A short flight I may add akin to that of a chick

I wonder is it a sick goldfinch with Trichomoniasis? A healthy bird wouldn't snooze in the daytime.

    Not a goldfinch.

Looks very small -- my first thought was goldcrest. The way it's holding its head you wouldn't see the crest, and I don't think you'd see the wingbars or other plumage characteristics from that angle. Foot looks good for goldcrest ;-).

Hard to be sure from that angle... maybe the video would help.

Just came across this. Looks like a Goldcrest but it's difficult to make out.

Precious little camera action in all the wet weather of late... so here's one of my favourite birds from last autumn... grey-cheeked thrush on Galley Head in West Cork.

Backs up my first impression... the only other thing I can think of is maybe an overwintering chiffchaff -- but size and shape suggest goldcrest.

Keps, sorry to be a doubting Thomas, but are you sure that's a blackbird, albeit a juvenile and/or a female? I don't know if it's the angle, but the beak seems wrong, and the colour of the eye seems too brown, too.

Stunning photos as usual, anyway. :)

    @New Home -

I'm never sure -but through process of elimination?

Here is another pic of same bird- think you are right about the beak

PS - you can see how birds are descendants of dinosaurs:)

Definitely!!! I get that impression with cormorants in particular. :)

(Edit: I was just thinking, one of those birds is a Dunnock, the other is a Dunno. :D)

Thanks Keps, your own are pretty stunning, what lens are you using? Sigma 500mm F/4 here some of the time, otherwise 70-200 F/2.8....

    @ bogman

I'm using the 'cheapish' Tamron 150-600mm zoom
But I'm using it with a full format camera - the Nikon 800 ( produces 36mb pics)

They just work so well together imo:)
