Wood duck, most likely escapee. True wild birds can turn up: Will have no rings, behave wild/nervous.

Here is the BWI page on the Corn Bunting
Knowing Capercaillie I guess he's very much on top of this - but the blurb does include the lines:

Where to See: Only likely to occur to as a vagrant to Ireland. The last Irish record is from Cape Clear in 2006. Any potential sightings, especially in possible breeding habitat should be immediately reported to BirdWatch Ireland.

As big as a starling. Distinctive call. They look quite plump. The yellow over eye is pollen. The sturdy "bullfinch" like bill is very distinctive and upper mandible is grey, while lower mandible is paler colour. No white on side of tail is distinctive marking in itself!

    Spain:pac:

    What a pity

I thought that as a 'byproduct' of your amazing Corncrake work - that a Corn bunting might have dropped in for a minute or two

    Enjoy Spain :)

Unless there was a re-introduction programme perhaps?

Corn bunting ideally need small scale tillage intermixed with extensive grassland, I know of only one farmer with that mix. There would need to be an agri-environmental scheme to incentivize that type of agriculture. NPWS lacks funding for any re-introduction and BWI would not have the skills/ability for farmland management.

It's a shame we lost them as a breeding bird in the country.
