I kinda guessed that alright.... not usually that much of a turn out for parade on a tuesday morning. I meant is it intake DA,DB,EA,FA etc etc etc

Current Phase 1 in Templemore is KC and KD. KC are due to leave next Friday. KD are in week 5 or 6.

Is this an advert for 'Garda Lite'?

No offence to the member concerned but I imagine he gets a rough time on the weekend night-shifts. We always use the yard stick here of 'if we were out on the piss and it turned nasty could so and so nick me?' If yes - then proceed to operational policing. If no - then fcuk off to mickey-mouse office-based policing role. Garda lite wouldn't pass our local test sadly.

Me think his stab vest was tailored made for him. See the way it hugs into his side. You wouldn't get that service up in templemore. Must have contacts in the trade:D

In reply to the origional query.
Once in a while I wear army boots, blue combats, black short sleeve collared t-shirt and stab vest over that, plus utility belt.... which is basically my mountainbike gear without the jacket. (I don't wear the runners...no ankle support!)

Thats not the proper way to wear the uniform,, but some days your on the bike and you get sent off in a car without time to change, you get warm, off comes the high vis bike jacket and hey presto...the uniform you described.
I think it's more comfy and looks proffessional.

New gear/ new contract... I'm guessin more rubbish kit.
Here in Paddyland instead of buying tested and proven gear we try gettin it made. Minister X announces 20 new jobs in ballkygobackwards producing Garda gear.
    Example: ASP pouches!!

    I rest my case.

The newer asp pouches are not too bad. Alot better than the initial ones. Granted, they are not the recommended holders but still.

(Actually, if u look at skinny garda, he has the Asp branded ASP holder)

I have only today received my Mountain Bike gear. Stores decided to give me everything XL when I requested L. Result? Everything hanging off of me. I could get away with the jacket but the trousers go up to my chest and are still too long!

Great piece of kit though. Has anyone dealt with stores recently? I might take a trip up to Santry to see if I can sort it out soon.

I expect the usual  responses in relation to my query above. I can only hope they (stores) will be helpful.

the asp pouches are made by a reputable italian firm and weren't made specifically for the gardai, have a look here, the one we have is second from the right on that page.

That looks better than what's issued here :D

I wonder what ejit sourced them.
No use if you can't pull your baton with one hand on day one.(I know they stretch eventually with a little help/ hairdryer/boiling water /cutting bits off etc.)
    ASP one works wonderfully everytime.
Another bit of privately purchased kit
(Along with the kevlar gloves, spare cuffs, magnum boots, UV light, belt keepers, multi tool etc.)

    istockphoto_2992465_rigid_bar_handcuffs.jpg

Are the rigid handcuffs standard in the Gardai yet? And do you have a secondary pair?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭kwalsh000

The latest phases out of Tipp have the semi rigid. Not sure about everyone else but I normally have an extra pair of Smith and Wesson cuffs just incase. I have heard about problems using non issued cuffs for various reasons but better to have two if needed.

What we really would need in each car/van ideally would be those leg restraints that do be seen on the likes of road wars et al.

these are the cuffs my phase were issued coming out of the college last aug/sept.

I carry my rigid cuffs, a set of chain hiatts as a second set, and we're issued leg restraints, which are a super piece of kit.

The usual problem is that if there's any issue involving litigation, and its non-force issue kit, the job may not back you stating you weren't issued the kit, so you weren't trained to use said kit and weren't insured to use said kit. That's the usual warning we get.

Did the course in October; and needless to say I'm in a Division that isn't geographically close to the DMR in any shape or form.

City4Life. I'm planning on giving Stores a phonecall and asking if it's possible for me to go up and do a straight swap. Hopefully they'll be willing. All of the gear is one size bigger than I had requested on the application form. The one difficulty is that I have an I/C who is very eager to get members out on the bikes so I know he won't be too impressed if I refuse to because of the gear. To hell with it though; I can't use it as I won't get a swap otherwise.

I have a feeling that I could be told where to go and rejected to a six month waiting list.. mgcop.gif

On a side note; has anyone noticed that AGS PR lacks a large amount of professional/promotional shots like you would see for the PSNI, NYPD, MET and other large organisations?

I feel it's a major let down; as I feel mass media broadcasting of quality professional video/picture shoots contributes to overall professionalism and self esteem. The only exception to the rule are the promotional shots of the mounted unit; however I would mainly be referring to regular policing. Even if they are models wearing the uniforms..it looks the part.

    IMO.

    +1.

I take the view that AGS closed door policy has contributed to misunderstanding and distrust in some quarters over the years and the media void surrounding AGS does not assist in promoting the organisation.

Love them or hate them, shows like Road Wars, Street Crime UK, Police Interceptors etc etc have opened the door to UK policing and have shown the public that the Police are human, fallible and in some cases, even likeable!

Its arguable that on account of the selective nature of these shows (and the clever editing) the force is portrayed in a positive, professional light. What there is no arguing with is that such programmes are a great recruiting tool and pr machine.

No doubt about that. It shows the reality of policing compared to what people assume while also showing people what idiots they can be at times. THat said, I have little faith in such a show being done credible in Ireland.
