A consultant has been appointed at this stage, a number of advance works tenders have been prepared and published on etenders earlier this year - archaeology, site investigation and advance civil works. Even still doing well to get started on site by Q1 2019.

True, a consultant for the advance works only. this will be a design and build contract which will have a separate procurement process starting with the consultant

Construction to start in 2019 according to the Taoiseach

That's good cause it was originally 2020-Q1.

Just to be sure, the bit bypassing Macroom will be HQDC while the rest will be 2+2?

A similar system to the Mallow road with the wire up the middle?

The current design sadly uses cheese wire which is lethal to motorcyclists. Would much prefer a concrete barrier.

A recent accident on the Mallow road involving a Garda motorcyclist proves just how dangerous the cheese wire is.

Sure why would they bother when the "experts" keep telling us that exceeding an arbitrary number by as little as a mere 1 km/h is the cause of ALL fatalities and there would never be any problems if we all drove within the speed limit:rolleyes:?

I don't think that's exactly what they say now Captain. ;)

I know this is a really stupid question, but I thought the 'M' prefix was only used for Motorways, so why M22?

    Typo or error.

Although when Ovens to Macroom is done it should be redesignated as the M22 from J1 N40.

Sadly the M22 was just an error or possible slip of the tongue on the Taoiseach's part.... despite his time in transport, his knowledge of the national road network appears to be less than comprehensive.... at least when it comes to Cork and Kerry. The transcript of Leaders Questions for the 03-Oct has Danny Healy-Rae asking a fairly descriptive question on the status of the frozen Farranfore-Killarney scheme.... only to get a response from the Taoiseach that was related to the Macroom bypass... "If I remember correctly, when I was Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, the project got stuck in legal issues. There was a heritage case or a case involving property that held it up. " (at least that was correct re Macroom). He then went on to apologise for getting "his Kerry road projects mixed up". At which Michael Martin, Aindriais Moynihan and the Healy-Raes hesitated little in pointing out that Ballyvourney/Macroom are in fact in Cork.

    Exactly this.

Unfortunately, the Macroom-Ovens section is at least 15 years away.

    How depressing is that.

It may come sooner, depending on who wins the next election! ;)

So, it will be a motorway to Macroom, or all the way to Ballyvourney?

Motorway as far as Coolcower east of Macroom. This would include a motorway redesignation of the Ballincollig bypass

I was under the impression that part of the Macroom bypass would be HQDC?

    No, all 2+2.

Was originally planned to be HQDC as far as the R582 junction but this has been downgraded to 2+2 now as Quackster pointed out above

2+2 would be effective enough for the region, however that cheese wire isn’t.

A concrete barrier is far safer surely, more costly i accept.

It was passable all morning albeit one lane, traffic was mental all day with Cork bound traffic back to the Amenity centre...

At least we hope so - what you're saying isn't confirmed.

Traffic volumes from Coolcower to Ballincollig would be sufficient for Type 1 DC - TII will likely redesignated the lot as it's up to standard and will have an alternative route along its length.

Avoid Macroom def today. Backed up to 2 mile bridge. Not sure is there a cause, or just that it's Friday.

Nothing on AA roadwatch Twitter - so must just be Friday bank holiday traffic

See Kellehers opening a shop at Coolcower filling station. Eventually got planning. It's a RE.store of the Topaz brand. This will be just off the bypass, when it's built.

And will do good business for the next couple of years. Always thought Macroom lacked a proper stop, besides the filling stattion near the Millstreet Road junction
