    hi,
from reading this allabout weight etc i would like to know.... im 6 foot 6 and weigh 17 and a half stone... was just wondering is there anyway that i can find out my bmi for the medical standards or does anyone know if it fits the right criteria as them silly machines in chemists are stupid and dont go tall enough for my height!!!!!!!!

I'm glad you are going to be on our side!!!
Your BMI is coming up as 28.3. This is using any of the BMI calculators online. Just google " BMI Calculator " and put in your height and weight and it gives you the figure. These are a guideline only but are near as damn it!

does this mean that i will fail the medical because of that bmi or what is the story?28.3 is nearly in the obese range......and there is hardly a pick on me...

    20-25 is normal
    25-30 is overweight
    30+ is obese

You will be fine up to 30. BMI above 30 seems to be at the examiners discretion. But keep a check on it and dont put on any more weight and you will be grand.

Nah you will be fine man, my BMI was 27.? something i cant remember exactly now, i was told i would have to ":eek:watch my weight:eek:", now im not saying im buff or anything, but i couldn't lose any weight if i tried unless it was muscle but im not carrying any excess weight, im 5 10.5'' -5 11'' and around 14 stone

Im fairly stout and have a good build with a lot of muscle, and i passed when technically, well according to BMI im overweight.

    BMI = Bo!!ox

The only caveat i have is that to be safe you would want to be coming in under 30....;)

Firstly you need to know did you get a refferal for 6 months to recheck BMI or did she fail you.

If you got a refferal you need to write to the Chief medical officer (or even better get your GP to write to him) looking for direction as to the standards in this regard. He will have to come back issuing an exact BMI figure for a 6'1" male age whatever. Then you have 6 months to meet this. Whatever they say goes unfortunately, you have to meet the same standards as everyone else and there is no grey area.

If you failed medical outright then of course you can appeal the decision and should do so straight away as you should have been given the chance to meet the standard. In your appeal, again request the information on standards for BMI and your interest in being retested without having to sit apptitude tests and interview again.
There is a lot of information on the appeal procedure with the public appointments office at publicjobs.ie and you didn't say when you had your medical, but there are deadlines for appealing.
I cannot see an appeal reversing the decision of the doctor but it will give you a chance to clarify and retry.
Hope this is useful and good luck with it.

hey thamks for that..ah no she said id failed and i wouldnt get another medical for 12-18 months, is it a rule i should have been gven a chance or just kind of a fairness thing?? im thinkin at this stage they probably have a quota for the amount of over bmi they can let in, had medical at 830 wednesday just gone..i wouldnt have a problem to meet realistic standards..cant find that info on public jobs at the mo' but il have a look when i get in from work..thanks!

She should not have told you that you wouldn't get another medical for 12 - 18 months. If you were to reapply (allowing the 6 month rule) it is possible that you would be back up for medical again within 12 months so what she said is bull****. The Garda medical in is carried out by GPs who are not necessarily specialists in any field of medicine so the norm is if they feel they have a query about anything that could be sorted they should refer. i.e. eyesight. If lazer surgery can fix it get it done and they will take the experts word you now meet the standard. i.e. if you have dental carries, get the extraction or filling and we will take the experts opinionyou now meet the standard. i.e. if you are overweight ( we all understand that you are not, but thats the S**t BMI system) lose some and come back with BMI within standard.
We would all accept that anything irreversible like, loss of hearing, severe diabetes, chronic asthma or bronchitis, etc. etc. , would be grounds for failing as you are likely to never meet the standard but in you case it is fixable ( if only for the day you are tested) so on these grounds and the fact that your medical was recent you should ring Garda appointments (01) 6661644 and ask them how to appeal this.
The information on appealing under the Garda Siochana Admissions and appointments regulations 1988 are in the "notes for candidates literature issued on public jobs.ie.
I definately think you are due a chance to lose weight and be retested without repeating written tests and interview and this is why you should appeal.
It is important to note that these 1988 regulations do state that the candidate must comply with the relevant height/weight guidelines so the decision will not be overturned the best you can hope for is a deferal and a second shot at the medical.
Also this is my interpretation of the rules and I am not an authority on the subject. Once again best of luck and feel free to pm me if I can be of more help.

Don't use earphones until then. Bring something to read, as there is a lot of waiting around. Usually there is a bit of craic with the lads, but you never know.

Bring a big bottle of water to drink so you're able to give the urine sample quickly.

Nothing worse than hanging around for an hour or so not able to pi** !

yeah thanks more or less doc told me she would have passed me if i brought my glasses- i only wear them for reading board in college said i may need to get contacts right eye was fine left eye let me down slightly but optician said i couldnt have contacts cos my eye sight wasnt bad enough.. The medical was actually ok they were lovely there did urine sample and blood pressure, then hearing listen really carefully sound very faint, lungs blow into a tube had to do ten times cos machine was broken:rolleyes: then the doc sees you gown is very flattering :) you have to touch your toes, she checks your spine, then women get breast check and they touch around ur tummy and ask u to cough then you do eye sight test if you do wear glasses bring them even for the slightest thing else you may get held up like me and then colour blind test is easy read numbers from a coloured book.
have you heard about your interview yet??

Just to clarify for asthmatics, the peak flow (breath test) will not cause you problems unless you have chronic asthma or bronchitis that is not under control. People who have their asthma under control ( with inhalers etc ) are likely to achieve the same results as smokers if not better. I am asthmatic and passed with flying colours. Smoking will diminish your lung capacity but unless you have a noticeably bad wheeze all the time you should be ok.
I also found the nurse didn't explain it great on the day. The idea is to measure the amount of air in your lungs. She will tell you to take deep breaths and then blow into the tube or machine until all the air is expelled from your lungs. What is worth noting is that the quicker you expel this air, the higher the reading ( especially on the manual test). So you should be looking to expel all the air in 1-2 seconds.
i.e.If you take 4 seconds to expel all the air in your lungs you will get a lower reading than if you expel this same amount of air in 2 seconds,
I hope you are all fogging up your screens practising this :D

The wait on a medical varies from 2 weeks to a couple of months.
You just need to have patience with it. They will contact you.

If you need eye surgery, then do the medical before it, (who knows you might pass the eye test) if you fail it over your eyes, they defer your medical allowing you to get surgery, once you have surgery, you wait 6 weeks (im on week 5 at the minute ) then submit an eyesight report from the surgeon to the medical people. They will then decide if its up to the standard required (which in 99% of cases, it is).
    Good luck

ok folks its probably the wrong place to post up something about stage 2 but im really frustrated and need someone's opinion.

i did my interview on the 14th of may, stilling waiting on my result because they won't issue it till i have my qualification recongnized by NQRI,i applied for reconition 3 month ago and they said its at its second stage which is waiting to be signed by the justice minister himself.

i rang the HQ today asking the possibility of me getting in in augest he said its highly unlikely, and he also told me they started my background check 10 days ago,now the question is would that be an indicaiton of me passing the interview or is it because all my families are in china they started background check because it would take longer than irish canidates.thanks!:)

This is just my opinion and my intention is not to get your hopes up but because the background checks can be so extensive and labour intensive they tend not to start these until the candidate has been successful at interview stage. It would be my guess you were successful and they have started but I wouldn't have a clue how they vet your school qualifications. The fact they have started does not necessarily guarantee you progression in the competition. Hope this helps!!

Is the reason they said it was unlikely you'd get in for August because of the wait to get recognised, or the fact that spaces are filling up quickly for August?
