Heinous crimes such as rape and child abuse should carry a mandatory life sentence i.e. all of your natural life as this is the sentence that has been meted out to the victim. I really don't care if Mountjoy is over crowded and hasn't been improved since the 1800's........prison isn't meant to be nice, its meant to be a punishment, if you don't want to go there then don't commit a crime.
I have a massive problem with people drink driving and think if caught they should never be allowed to drive again. If they hit someone while driving under the influence then a custodial sentence should be mandatory.

No, snyper objected to a post of Terry's a couple of nights ago, which he felt was rude, but Terry wasn't actually being serious - it was a joke. To be fair, nobody seemed to get it - even me (and I get jokes).

Perhaps it would be clearer to edit the title of the thread then. Instead of threatening to ban people for posting controversial opinions in a thread entitled "post your most controversial opinions"? Maybe "Post your mildly unusual but not offensive opinions"?

Where did I threaten to ban? I said I would lock this thread. And there's a difference between having a controversial opinion and being able to back it up, and just posting one-liners to shock people.

If i said all travellers should be steralized at birth, thats contraversial and i can give you an endless list of reasons for saying it. But, it still would be, by any fair minded person be considered a daft and perhaps abusive opinion at the same time, and of course its contraversial.

So ineffect its impossible to police this thread really. I understand what you are saying and yes i do agree, perhaps if there was a rule inserted into the OP, that no race or religion be mentioned at all then its possible to police the thread

You don't have to write several hundred words to back yourself up, but some level of cop-on is hardly too much to ask. For instance: "I think that x is y as I believe bla is due to bla". Just posting "All whatnots should be whatever" and leaving it at that is just an attempt to elicit shock, nothing more.

Well, on that note, I'll elaborate on my original post. I think pornographic pictures docotored to look like children should be legal due to what is called the 'harm principle.' I think it was John Stuart Mill who devised it, and it is widely accepted these days. While the notion of child pornography is abhorrent to any right-thinking people, no real harm was done to anyone in th making of such images, and thus I can't see a good reason to make them illegal. Of course, I would not want to see them widely distributed, so maail-order only or something.
