It's a simple fact that a lot of taxi drivers are criminals. Wise up and don't be so sensitive.

admit that you just said this because you think it rather than for any empericial reason or back it up

and its quits a sweeping statement

:cool:oh and on the point of the original post
there is no reason not to take the number of that taxi and text it to everyone you know
just be subtle the drunks puking on us and attacking us , the lads slamming their doors when their motts tell them to cop on and not talk crap and the fat past it slaggs trying it on makes us sensitive

I always txt or call someone and let them know how i am coming home.

Even from work I'll call the boyfriend tell him which route I'll be cycling home...

It helps, on wednesday my phone fell from my pocket and got taken by a passer by so when leaving work on wednesday i rang from work and told him which way i was going and what time i was leaving at.

After an hour past (it takes me 45 to an hour to get home) he got in the car and drove the way i go and found me walking with my broken bike...

things happen and its good to let someone know where you are...

Taxi numbers are always sent in a txt message and also the company. i dont hail them off the street either, i only call them in.

Of course my statement was not based on empirical data. It is however a statement that has been echoed by the taxi drivers union as pointed out above. There is no reason to believe otherwise.

We have a link that appears to be broken ( Irish Times asking to login )
The link is not broken. Perhaps you should broaden your horizons and subscribe.
    Spook_ie wrote: »
And a forth link to the Times which is about overcharging ( not criminality of Taxi Drivers )
Read the article properly. It notes 20 instances of complaints about criminal behaviour.

I dunno what the problem is here. I think the OP is just being careful. You really never know who's driving you home. It's better to be safe than sorry.

I mean, we tell our kids not to talk to strangers and yet we forget that it is not only children that run the risk of being kidnapped or attacked. You are getting into a strange car with a strange person. It's good sense to have their number. Taxi drivers really shouldn't be offended by this.

    taxi drivers aren't

some posters said that IF they were taxi drivers they would be
the taxi drivers were only annoyed at posters reckoning that "EVERYBODY" knows that most criminals drive taxis between heists

I don't think any taxi drivers are offended by it, what we are offended by is the non mitigated posts of people who say that A LOT of taxi drivers are criminals.

Would be rather like someone saying " A lot of Boards users look at kiddie porn" some ( by sheer number of people ) probably do BUT not a lot

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,122 ✭✭✭LadyJ

Well all I wanted to say was that anyone who would be offended by being asked their number as a taxi driver should think a little harder about the state of the world and taxi drivers are not all criminals obviously but everyone needs to be cautious these days. That's all I'm saying.

By the way, I'm in work and got distracted so forgot to read past page 1! Therefore my response was solely related to the first few posts. Oops!

    Still stands though

It's not the roof number that you should use, the PSV licence number is the one to use. A lot of drivers share cars ie. use the same roof number, whereas the PSV licence number is unique to the individual driver.

I'm guessing OH stands for "other half". A bit overprotective don't you think?

Missed this one on the previous thread readings...

Its not so true now as used to be, with the advent of deregulation the majority of taxis now are owner/user. There are a small number of firms who will rent taxis to you, but if you have the plate number they should have a record of whom it is rented to.

That's just ridiculous. Definite persecution complex.

By the way if it makes our resident taxi drivers feel more secure I'll rephrase my statement.

    Some taxi drivers are criminals.

are you a shrink i don't have a persecution complex
i'm not even a taxi driver anymore

    its not true
    you made it up

you are not now rephraseing you are completely saying something different

do you find taxi drivers intimidating?

This is what I am now saying:
Some taxi drivers are criminals. In my opinion many taxi drivers are criminals.

If I am saying something completely different then so be it.

No. I deal with problematic taxi drivers. As Spook_ie already knows.

I had a taxi driver prosecuted not too long ago for overcharging. As a result he was prosecuted for further offences. I am certainly not intimidated by taxi drivers.

And why would I know that? The only thing I know is that a lot of criminals post on Boards and use taxis

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

In fact there are more criminals posting on boards and using taxis than there are criminals driving taxis

I wouldn't doubt it for a second. Circa 80,000 Boards users. Surely a good few are criminals who use taxis.

You would know that because you posted on the thread encouraging me to follow through with it. Apparently you want the industry cleaned up.

Thanks for the link, nice to see a result, now all we need to know is what were the more serious charges....edit Can't find anything on any news links or feeds, not convinced it was that serious!

Still doesn't mean that you're right in posting comments like your's without the facts to substantiate them

WTF?! Where are you getting this from? 50% of taxi drivers have criminal records?

Those figures must have come from the same survey that said a third of all Irish males between 15 & 44 (or something) own a hair straightener. Complete & utter bullshít.

What about this then, 85% of taxi drivers are > 25 years old, 30% of taxi drivers are bald/have receding hairlines, yet 60% own/use hairstraighteners regularly.

Obviously these stats apply to city slickers, when asked drivers in Hill Billie land said they prefer sheep.

Apology accepted, now all we need you to tell us is Why? do you have the opinion that many taxi drivers are criminals.

Do you ask every taxi driver who's car you get into " Excuse me mate, do you mind if I ask, have you got a criminal record?"

Have you been robbed/mugged/assaulted by lots of taxi drivers?

Are you yourself a habitual criminal with an SPSV license? and drive a taxi and are regularly "pulled" by the Gards as a suspect?

You should have something to backup why you have formed such an opinion that is unsubstantiated by fact

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭2qk4u

The reason a lot of people think that Taxi Drivers are criminals is the same reason thet people think that every one that goes to the pub is an alcoholic and same reason they think that someone that drives a honda civic is a boy racer, ect, ect ....
People need to make their own mind up and form an opinion on their own personal expeiriance or just facts..
