Tony Fenton played the clip of Ray celebrating the record and I have to say I was unimpressed. I can't really say why it just left me cold, I think Shave Or Dye is great campaign for a great cause and they do it well, getting people involved, hearing people's stories of cancer and why they're getting involved and showing support. To top it all off with a big cheer about breaking some petty world record just seems totally self interested and self promoting. The record thing just doesn't do it for me, completely takes away from the people and makes it all about Ray. This was highlighted by Ray's reaction.

All that said I wasn't hoping they'd fail, it's a great cause, and I also only heard a ten second clip of Ray whooping and hollering and I'm sure he brought it back down to earth eventually but there was a gloating tone to his whooping which I didn't like. I'll have to listen back to record bit in full.

So basically what you're saying is that you're OK with Shave or Dye as a concept, just so long as it doesn't involve Ray D'arcy or any celebrating that he might do because of him being involved in breaking a world record. Oh sorry actually, make that a "petty" world record. Jesus H Christ. Talk about an ironic username...

I'm pretty sure he wasn't gloating, simply just happy for all involved, including himself. He had spent the morning talking to people whose lives have been ripped apart by this f**king bitch of a disease- of course he'd be whooping and hollering to know something great had happened that morning. What do you want, for him to go "Right- fair play, now get over it, sure it's only a haircut"? I genuinely can't see what you mean about it being "all about Ray". It was about all the people who were involved there yesterday.

As I said I literally only heard 10 seconds and those ten seconds I heard were purely of Ray celebrating the world record. Personally I feel the world record attempt takes away from the actual event, I don't see the need for it. Would involvement be any less if they ditched the record attempt?

I do think Shave Or Dye is great and I partook myself only last year so I'm not trying to take away from the event, but I feel the world record is needless. Apologies if I came across as bitter. I'll refrain from commenting on ten seconds of audio out of context again ;)

Shave or Dye gets bigger, better and more successful every year. Today FM and the Irish Cancer Society are not going to change a winning format to suit a few whingers on the internet.

Just on the D'Arcy/Foley thing, it's not that they don't like each other, it's just they have such different ways and styles of doing what is essentially a very similar job. (Or so I've heard.) I never heard about the coffee mug story. I have heard Foley slag him here and there, especially over the texts from the '6 foot truck drivers crying on the motorway' and stuff like that. Even the other day, on his NTN Podcast Foley took off Ray's accent and was saying "what can we do, really though, what can we do". They're never going to be radio colleagues who will socialise together, but nearly everyone works with someone that they have nothing in common with and would never socialise together.

I don't think that Ray is disliked at Today FM, but I would say there are probably people who wouldn't want to get on his bad side is all. To me, he is the face of Today FM.

There has been a lot of nitpicking on this thread lately, some of it way over the top imo. Seems he can't do right no matter what he does. I used to have my own issues with the show and things like Ray's attitude to guests etc, but I learned to just zone in and out of the show at work, and now I enjoy it as much as I ever did. I've enjoyed the return of Jenny a lot more than I thought I would too, and herself and Mairead ganging up on Ray can be funny. I think Jenny has already put Ray back in his box a few times!

    Very well said.

I know that child birth is one of Rays favourite subjects, but that Gareth fella is definitely a cut above most Daddys. Fair play to him.

More baby ****e now. Rays next mission is to have a 3rd kid and deliver it himself by the side of the road.

Ah stop, that was a fairly impressive story!

I rarely catch the very start of the show, but I did this morning. Is there any reason Ray does the newspapers on his own? Of all the features they have this seems like one of the best ones suited for interaction and banter but instead it's just him reading through them. Has it ever been explained why Mairead and/or Will don't jump in?

It's an odd one alright. I think that Ray is all alone in the studio for that first segment.
    No idea why.

Ha I have to say Ray is not wrong about Damo, he's one angry dude, Nothing makes Damo Happy he hates everyone and everything!

Simply put it's probably his favorite part of the show. He gets to sigh and moan, moralise and generalise as many people as he likes (usually politicians)

It really is the most infuriating few minutes on Irish radio.

Fairplay to Hector, not going on with any bitterness, holding himself up high, dunno if I'd be quiet so magnanimous!

Ah right, missed that. I've noticed them do that a fair bit, they may previously mention that Ray is meeting so-and-so later to record an interview but when the comes to air they just segway in and act like it's live, no "and now here's an interview we did last week". I'm trying to think of an example because there was one recently, was is the lads from Anchorman maybe ... when people are paying to text in you think they'd warn people.

I don't ever recall them pulling that Suzanne Vega stunt ever previously.
Certainly not with a musical act.

It was a bit not on, tbh.

That's because they're so good at it you wouldn't notice, seamless ;)

They did it recently, not with a musical guest, but someone more famous and I only reason I remember it is because Ray had mentioned the previous week he was off to record an interview with whoever it was. But when it aired you'd swear it was a part of the show, because they ask in advance for questions but when it plays out on the radio it sounds like they're getting them in live.

Why was Ray playing a Juanes song today?

Well he has been known to play it but it was for Hector who was in studio.

Enjoyed Hector on today. Couldn't stand his radio show but I thought he was good craic today.

The agony aunt segment is a bit stale at this point. I was able to predict most of what Niamh was going to say today while Ray was reading the emails. It's always the same texts too, "Dump him/her, I was in a similar situation a few years ago and now I'm happy." "Talk to him/her, let him know how you feel.", etc, etc.

It was also very unnecessary to read out the "Dump the nagging, controlling bitch!" text. Seriously, have some sort of standard if you're going to read them out. Blatantly abusive ones that add nothing to the discussion are pretty bloody pointless.

I remember once a girl emailed in because she was "the other woman". I can't recreate it but you could genuinely hear the pain and hurt she was feeling in her words. I'm not justifying he situation in any way but I would say 99% of the texts they read out were pure abuse. I didn't know high horses came with radios

On Ian Dempsey they had a brief discussion about height with Iano saying that he is 6ft. I think it was Johnny Collins who disagreed and Iano said something like "We'll measure my height.. Oh wait that's a Ray D'Arcy thing"
I honestly believe Ray is the laughing stock of Today FM.

It was even better than that. He said something like i'm as bad as ray d'arcy!
