I think I got that same shower in Dunboyne around that time. There was a torrential downpour and then buckets of hail. People thought it was sleeting because there was a lot of soft hail mixed in that gives the impression of snow.

Was studying in bed completely unaware of the explosive convection just East of here until my dad told me, off the coast it seems to stretch all along the coast and is the some the best convection i've ever seen. I wouldn't be suprised if i started to here thunder pretty soon:D

I saw those cb's out towards the irish sea this morning. They looked spectacular in the morning sun.

I went for a spin today. Drove to Baltinglas then to Arklow and back home to Wicklow.
Hit an almighty hailstorm just after Arklow on the N11, was like thunder hitting the car and seemed to be partially melted as was splatting on the windscreen rather than bouncing off, had to slow to a crawl to see head safely!.
Was a beautiful afternoon in Baltinglas - 15C on the car thermometer and not a drop of rain.
As I headed back towards the coast just after Tinahely the showers started and got heavier the further i went.
A very enjoyable drive. Hacketstown is a really beautiful area I have to say, a few miles away Tinahely is a right dump by comparison, strange that.

I'm told there was non stop thunder here near Arklow for a while around lunchtime and into the afternoon yesterday with hail.
I missed it as I was down in west Limerick. We did have a thunderstorm there with heavy rain between about 530 and 6pm.

There is going to be some real fireworks around on Thursday especially in the West.....unsure about the East because the wind may be onshore though that not a certainty yet. Off-shore wind is best for us coast huggers and there is a chance:D

The 12z ups the cape and Li slightly in the midlands for tomorrow with Li at -3 and cape levels touching 600j/kg. The risk will be much lower on the coast though i'd say.

Continue to post here in the event of all things thunderstorm related, wheather it be radar, maps, charts, forecasts or just simple discussions.

Weather pics(clouds, lightning) in attachments only are allowed here otherwise use [thread=2055050139]Weather pics 2007[/thread] for your snaps.

Over the months you will find some variables or terms describing suitability of storms which are:
CAPE - This is the amount of potential energy in the atmosphere. High CAPE will indicate a high chance of thunderstorms.
LI - Lifted Index (LI) displays the 'trigger' potential at the surface to initiate unstable conditions. A low or negative LI will indicate conditions for thunderstorms are favourable.
    Cb-Cumulonimbus or thundercloud.
Anvil-Where the top of the Cb reaches the stratosphere and spreads out like a flat top.
Cell or Supercell-An individual storm or a violent storm.
Squall line-Multi cellular organised storms forming in a line usually ahead or parallel to cold fronts.
Embedded Storms-Storms that are contained in overcast conditions
Convection-Warm air rising, cools, condenses forming cumuli clouds.
Orographic lift-Low level winds are forced to rise against rising terrain ie:mountains.Prevailing wind on a hot summers day, this lift can produce rapid convection.
Convergence zone-usually refers to a region in the atmosphere where two prevailing winds meet and interact, usually resulting in turbulent weather.
Lapse rate steepeing-is another fancy term for instability.
Sferics-Sound of low-frequency radio signals that derive from lightning strikes.Common terms would be strikes or strokes.

An upgrade to the 6 weather just now in keeping with the potential of Thunderstorms for later today(thursday).
But there is a possiblity of a more organised band and a possible line squall of storms pushing in from the SW to affect the SE in particular.Together with orographic lift over the wicklow mountains in particular, a convergence zone will form here with a south east flow ahead of it.With Cape at moderate levels 300-400j/kg,temperatures is the key to how significant this development will get thus increasing cape and lift.

Temps need to be up near the 20c mark to be favourable but 17-18c is not bad for convection to enhance this trough.A result will be some appreciable rainfall totals over the mountains and in and around the SE corner of the country with some moderate storms if all ingredients work out that is.

As for the rest of the country,Evelyn summed it up,PM and TM air over the country will result in instability so all areas are at risk from storms mainly midlands west most at risk.Land convection with again temps on the wrong side of favourable will determine how intense a storm will be.

Lots of cg's up already just west of me.:D Looks like it's lashing down over there. I woke up to a bang, possibly thunder although i wasn't sure;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,033 ✭✭✭Snowbie

According to the synoptic charts that any trough lines will be kept further south of Ireland to affect southern UK.Although there is a line of showers stretching from Cork to Wicklow moving northwards and a second clump dissipating off the wicklow coast heading towards the Dublin area.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,300 ✭✭✭arctictree

Yeah - looks like a line just about to hit the Wicklow/Dublin coast around now!

The forecfield around Dublin sure killed that one off.
West is best for showers atm and east coast could do with an export from Wales if we are to see a spark later in the afternoon.
Very slow development this morning so far.

Apart from one heavy shower earlier in the morning that gave 0.8mm nothing happening here either

this would be a very handy tool if it covered more than the south of the country aswell

Thanks Trogdor,i have added them into the OP.

I can see from here a lot of cumulus build up over the mountains. You could be directly below that?
No CBs,no towering cumulus just decent size stuff.Looks dark beneath it from here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,355 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

Nothing like yesterday at all here. Too much cumulus fractus, can only imagine light showers out of this stuff, no nimbus at all that I can see in the sky round here.

Cumulus frags dotted about the country.:(
The UK has a lot of individual cells and one decent size one over Birmingham.Manchester area has had a couple of storms so far.

Saw something bubbling up North-West of here so decided to have a break from maths theroems:( ,can anyone else see it as i don't have a very good view north-west from here, it looks like a towering cu from here but apart from the cb's at around 8/9 o'clock this morning it's the best i've seen all day.

Lots of convection in the west today with a few strikes.Nothing much though. All the action was across the water in the UK and now pushing into the scottish borders.
Very disappointing again here in the east with clear blue skies all the way after a few showers this morning.
Look promising last night with a good indication of a trough pushing NE across southern parts which never materialised.
UK again looks set for a pummeling across the south later this evening and tomorrow.

Just coming down the M1 from work a half hour ago, out to my west were 3 anvils with the sun glinting from behind and another mushroom cloud back to my SW.
Might head out with the camera later, bound to be a nice sunset...
