A classic film on later tonight (UTV, 02:15): The Sting (1973), with Paul Newman and Robert Redford. It's very good, and I'm not saying that just because the Academy gave it 7 Oscars. If you've seen the semi-sequel The Color Of Money (Newman & Tom Cruise), but not this, you're missing out badly.

From out there on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch’.

    Was that not The Hustler?

The Hustler (1961) came first, then The Sting (1973), then The Color of Money (1986). Newman played Fast Eddie Felson in the 1st and 3rd, but not in The Sting, so I shouldn't even call TCoM a "semi-sequel", I suppose. But all three films have that "hustling" theme and spirit, I think.

    Great pair of films.

Another great film on tonight: Badlands (1973). BBC2, 12:55AM. This is the film that made stars of Martin Sheen, Sissy Spacek, and director Terrence Malick: possibly related to Bonnie & Clyde, except that Kit (Sheen) isn't in it for the money; they live in a fantasy world, and shooting people is just how Kit deals with them. Beautifully paced and filmed, as we expect from Malick.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin is on UTV, tonight at 10:35PM - if you're one of the few people who haven't seen this yet. Some seriouslt cringe-inducing scenes there ...

There is Shutter Island in about half an hour on RTE 1, as posted above. One of the best movies ever imo.
