Somebody mentioned bathing in salt water and i was told this would dissolve the stitches too early.

No medical advice on boards! :D

My specialist told me to bathe in salt water, just go with what your doc tells you.

Hey long time user first time poster

I've got a problem, bassicly my forskin is long as in about a centimeter but when I get a hard on, the forskin doesnt peal pack the hole way.

Now this can affect my as in sensation etc but its never proven to be a real problem tho.
I must admit i would like to be able to function as most men can.
I can't really explain but there's a centimeter of my forskin when flacid which is to tight is there any way the doctor can snip that bit and let me keep the rest rest as i dont want to loose sensation that you get with having a forskin...

    can this be done ?

Your GP can advise you on this ... no one here can.

Don't be embarrased to ask your own Doctor (or any Doctor) about it. This thread should be proof enough that the topic is quite common.

Please - make an appointment today and get some expert opinion :)

    Hi

Inspired by the thread, I've made an appointment with my GP for Thursday morning. I saw him a few months ago and he suggested some stretching techniques which have worked to a certain extent, but not all the way.

I'll see what his suggests this time and push for the operation. I'll let you know what happens.

In the meantime, can I ask:

    a. how long will it take to see a consultant from the initial GP appointment, and from then until the actual op?

    b. I assume it's done as a local anasthetic and you're out the same day?

    c. Realistically, how long should I take off work afterwards?

    Thanks.

I was waiting for about 4 months. I saw a surgeons clinic not a urologist.

Mine was due to be done under general anaesthetic. Due to an allergy i had to have a spinal block. Some have had it done local though.

A week is the general consensus.

    Good luck man!

Thanks. Wow. Four months? I was hoping it'd be quicker than that. I'm getting nervous about seeing the doc tomorrow without having such a long wait after that.

I'm sure private would be quicker. I was offered somewhere outside my locality under the Treatment Purchase Fund but i never got around to replying to them and the local surgeon was available for a appointment about 2/3 weeks after i got the letter.

Well, I saw my GP this morning, and - as others predicted - he was very straight-talking and re-assuring. He reckons that I don't need a full snip but rather a frenulumolgy (or some such title). I'm not convinced. I think it needs the full thing.

Anyway, he has referred me to a urologist and I've an appointment with him in a fortnight. According to the GP, the urologist does this sort of operation all the time. In fact, according to the Dr "He can do it in his sleep." I said I'd prefer if he was awake.

I'm hoping to get a cancellation, but in any case, I've an appointment for the 24th.

In the meantime, I'd appreciate any advice or thoughts what to say to this specialist when we meet.

I don't think you'll need to say anything dude, the doc will explain the situation. Just show him the problem and you'll be grand. Unless there was something specific you wanted to ask?

fyi, there's generally about a 3-month wait for the op after you see the specialist - you knew that, right?

  • Registered Users Posts: 102 ✭✭RolfHarris

Thanks. Well, I've waited this long, so I can wait a bit longer!

The only real issue is with a frenulum operation which I've read here and elsewhere doesn't always work and may result in a circumcision in any case.

I cannot retract fully, whether flaccid or erect. Is circumcision my only option? Are the creams/stretching helpfull in my situation?!

Only a doctor can say for sure really, but if you can't retract your foreskin at all, even when completely flaccid, then something needs to be done and quickly.

Really, just go and see your doctor ... I know all the advice given here about them not being phased by this kind of thing sounds a bit trite, but from my own personal experience it really is true ... he won't bat an eyelid, it's a very common problem and one that can be sorted out easily, either by stretching and the use of topical steroids or by circumcision. Just bite the bullet and go see him!

Yeah im going to see my gp, I was just wondering if the creams only work in certain situations.

TBH I don't know really, although I get the impression they're only useful in situations where it's just a bit tight or uncomfortable, rather than not being able to retract it at all as in your case.

I'm seeing the consultant urologist tomorrow afternoon. After loads of waiting around, it's becoming quite real now.

Keep your fingers crossed at 3.15 lads.

Try some home remedies (well, the stretching w/ cream or lube) if you can but if it's causing you pain by trying them then you'd wanna see what a doc has to say about it.

Where are you seeing the urologist ? For what it's worth, they can vary between hospitals so bare than in mind with how you respond to the consultation. Some hospitals (like the Mater in Dublin) cater to an older patient and can leave the younger guy feeling a bit left out so don't be afraid for a second opinion/referal if you're unhappy.

If you're paying private then "meh" as the kids say.

I saw the consultant this afternoon. A suitably supportive and reassuring chap. Booked into Mount Carmel for the end of August.

General anesthetic. One thing is worrying me - I have to be accompanied back home. I'd prefer to get a taxi. I life fairly close by.

by the hospital staff? are you sure they didn't just mean that someone should collect you, and make sure you get home ok?

It's always a good idea to have someone along with you after an operation involving a general anaesthetic .. a circumcision is no different. You may feel a bit groggy and wobbly on your feet after the anaesthetic, not to mention a bit sore .. it's just a precaution. A good friend or relative will be fine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 102 ✭✭RolfHarris

Just to clarify - they suggested what Alun said - to get a friend to give me a lift, rather than a taxi. He said they give both a general and local anasthetic to delay any pain.

is getting a lift a problem for you? maybe you don't want to tell anyone?

  • Registered Users Posts: 102 ✭✭RolfHarris

I'd prefer to keep it to myself to be honest. But I'm sure I can invent something!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,914 ✭✭✭✭tbh

I understand, but you know, you really should tell them you're going in, especially if it's a general anasthetic. You'd want to be really really unlucky to have any problems, but you know yourself - just in case. I told the guys in work it was a bone spur on my foot, explained the limp as well :)

listen, if you're stuck, let me know. I don't work far from the hospital, if I'm around I could drop you home - if you want, now. I won't take offense if you'd rather not :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 102 ✭✭RolfHarris

I do a fair bit of running, so I was thinking of inventing groin strain! But foot pain is good too.

I should be grand thanks. I live in Ranelagh so just assumed I'd be able to order a cab and be home in a few minutes. I may well take you up on your offer. Two months to go...

    hey all

another quick question - how long do you all recommend I take off work? I've plenty of holidays to take and have booked off the week after the operation. Is it worth taking an additional week, or by then will I be able to cope with an office job?
