iRiver IHP-140 is now available for only €350 from here.

You can also pick it up in Dixons for only €369.99! Probably worth the extra €20 if you ever have problems with it.

Great Mp3 player, great price. I paid €460 for mine and I still feel it was worth every penny:)

    Iriver all the way!

play's all file types, easy to use, can be used as aportable HD too. You are not restricted to usung itunes.
I had a chance to try both and I defo think the iRiver is beter, i also got the iriver MP3-CD player (slimx) and it is very very good.

Just look at the spec of the two!

Is that Dixons price for their stores in Dublin or online? If it's in Dublin I'd imagine it's only the 20gb model as Harvey Norman are selling the HP-140 for €499

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

All Dixons stores in Dublin, they will be out of stock for about another week or two though. 20G is €299, 40 is €370. €499 from Harvey could be for the 20G H300?

Besty, an extra €70 will get you twice the space. You will probably need it some day. I think it is worth it for the extra bit of cash, after all you'll be spending €300 anyway.

I know peats has the ihp-340 but its atleast 70 quid more expensive than the link posted in the first thread, biying these things online is perfectly safe and you save a packet.

I was torn between the I river and the ipod too but then I found the creative zen touch (20gig) which combines the pro's of both the ipod and iriver. A definate winner in my view. If your buying one tomorrow check out some reviews.

    Try

    http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk

Its a very good site for reviews.

yes 99% of the time. But I am still amazed at the 299 iHP120 in dixons, I have never seen it at that price online. I got one new on ebay for 305. peats are still charging.... just checked

Peats have it for 299 too! 399 for the iHP140

DOES IT FU<K, Stop talking our your arse....It is larger, it needs software to work, it does not play as many formats...they are all compared to the iriver. thats just for starters...
That site you meantioned is good though, because you can do a compare with different productions and see the differences quiet easily...

nice 24hr battery life. The iriver still has the radio (an accessory on the zen) and inline remote (i thought i would never use it but have never had it disconnected once) and direct encoding, optical in and out (can record music dvds direct as full quality wav or 360kps mp3), you also get the microphone, extensions, line in lead and carrying case (you get a case with the zen, not the ipod).

Well if he's talking out of his arse, then get your head out of your arse. If the man says that the Zen Touch is the jobbie for him, then you have no right to tell him otherwise.

    Ras,
The man gave his opinion, i gave mine and backed it up.
He said it was better i am disagreeing that does not mean my head is up my arse, obviously you know this guy.

Anyway, am leaving it there (anybody who has done any sort of looking into these productions knows the story)

I recently bought the ihp-140 (very good). I upgraded the firmware after getting it but does any one know how to delete songs on the player?(sorry if off topic)
I would highly recommend the iriver, the people I know have not been very happy with the ipod after while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Hey Delta, It took me ages to figure out how to do it too, I eventually read the firmware page and got it.

You have to have the player in STOP MODE as in, no song playing, then you can go from song to song deleting them, you have to have delete selected in the option menu though:)

Technically, the IHP-140 is the best.

just in case anyone was interested as to what i actually bought, i went for the 20gb ipod.couldnt get it in loads of o2 shops so was unbelievably close to going to dixons for the iriver but eventually got one in henry st. Must say i think its great so far. it would want to be for €340 though i suppose. thanks for everyones advice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Davey Devil

Why did you choose the iPod out of a matter of interest? Seems like practacally everyone was advising you to get the iRiver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

And now it seems for another €5 you could have got double the capacity, more features and much more satisfaction.

It's the fashion appeal I suppose.

I want the iriver 140 - anyone know where I can get it in Cork?

    Amazon works out about 370.

    I don't think there's a Dixons in Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Well get it from here (click this) :) over amazon.co.uk. It's only about €345 here. Or else you could get it when your in Dublin for €370 from Dixons.

i bought a 20 gig ipod today, and your right the styling did play an important part, its sexy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭buddy

I think the iriver looks sexier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I wont deny it looks good, and better to allot of people. But the IHP has so many advantages.

Buddy, you're right, it is sexy, just wait till you get the thing;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭CivilServant

If iriver starting advertising in europe with slim, sexy, big bosomed chicks holding it, while laughing and looking provocatively at another guy. Then the iriver might be sexy too...

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,351 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Was in Dixons in Jervis Centre today and the guy there knew nothing about them having IHP-140s, although he did say to come back on Saturday when they get new stock in. They had the IHP-120 for €299.

As regards the debate on the relative styling of the iRiver versus the iPod, personally I think the iRiver is a bit ugly and the appearance is further marred by the mass of technical labels on the back. By comparison the iPod is very sexy, but the IHP-140 comes loaded with way more features and it'll spend most of the time in my pocket anyway, especially as it has an excellent remote control - something the iPod lacks, so that's what my money will be going on.

Exactly, these things spend most of the time in your pocket, so really how it looks shouldn't be important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

by the way, I worked it out before. To buy accessories for the ipod so that it will have some of the features of the iriver (remote, radio, battery pack etc) it will add another €150 (approx) to the price. So basically, to have an IPOD come a bit closer to the iRiver, you will be paying about €500... and that's with HALF (20GB) the capacity. Now when all these things add up, The slight better look of the IPOD doesn't make the slightest differenct to where my money is going.

Just checked price of 40GB IPOD, works out including remote, battery pack etc to be about €560. And that's still with less features than iRiver. So basically, you're paying €200 more for a product that is inferior.

But if you think it's worth it for it's fashion appeal than you may as well just go for it. Personally I bought a portable music player for music, imagine that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭buddy

Damn, not in Dixons. I was going to hold back my usual "impulse buy" response and actually buy it in a shop.

Peats have it for €399. I hate paying 50 more but I probably will :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

    zaph wrote:

It is a well guarded secret, but those labels can be removed. I think it looks great, the new 300 series are revolting though, they look like electronic games from a pound shop.
I leave mine in the leather case in a backpack and just have the remote wire coming out. I never thought I would use the remote but have never had it off once.

buy from MX on the first link, amazon screw you for postage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Personally I would pay the extra €20 to get it in Dixons rather than abroad.

I would also try get peats down to €369. I wouldn't buy for €399 though. It's just the principal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭buddy

Yes, but Peats ship and I won't be in Dublin a while. I'll probably order this tonight.

    Itchy "impulse buy" fingers.

Then I'd just go with MX if I were you, save €50+:) Either way, €400 is still a nice price for what you get, I think it was worth every penny of the €460 I spent:)

An alternative to the Iriver and Ipod is below

    http://www.provantage.com/buy-22089415-neuros-audio-ii-128mb-40gb-bundle-usb-2-0-shopping.htm

you can even demo the controls on the homepage.
but check out the specs and the price.
    http://www.neurosaudio.com/

I got the 20gig bundle (but they go up to 80g) includes incar charger for 250euros delivered. but the FM transmitter is brilliant for those who want incar mp3 yet have not tape deck. quality is very good. Unlike zen you have to use s/w to add tracks, but it does support oggs amongst other things and is seen as an external drive.

Itsjust gone open source so it looks like there will be a lot of interesting s/w brought out for it. :D

Went with MX - about 345 euro so better value.

    Can't wait!!!!!!

I bought an IHP140 about 6 weeks ago now and haven't stopped using it since, find it great for trips abroad etc. Our place got burgled a few weeks ago and my wifes NetMD was nicked so we decied to upgrade her to an MP3 player and she picked out the Creative Zen, it was £179+shipping from Amazon.

Comparing both side by side the iRiver wins hands down but if all you want is a 20 gig player with great sound and none of the bells and whistles then the Zen Touch is a great choice.
It is a well guarded secret, but those labels can be removed.

Rubadub, can you tell us how?

I have an iRiver iFP190TC and am in the process of selling it, thinking of getting a hard disk based MP3 player instead! Now the only thing I'm wondering is should I go for the H340 or iHP140 from iRiver? The only major difference that I can see other than the colour screen is that I can record from radio using the H340, and can currently do this from the iFP, however can't do it on the iHP140.

    Any opinions greatly appreciated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    Cons:
No LCD remote included (however H1XX remote can be used with H3XX)
    Dearer
    No Optical ports
    Tiny bit bigger

    Pros:
    Colour screen
    Record from radio
    Better buttons
USB On the go (connect to a friends H1XX and transfer files) - to me that's the best thing about it. I'm not sure how compatible transfers are though.
    Picture viewer
    USB Charging

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭Fabritzo

Pro, the 340 charges from usb, you wont be getting your bonus from iriver this month cormie.

Haha, believe it or not, I'm not affiliated with them. It's purely a spread the good word thing.

    update on that review

which effectively gets rid of 2 of the cons

    and now

NDBM has successfully loaded MP3 files, Ogg Vorbis files, Windows Media Audio files and WAV files on Linux, Windows, OS X and Solaris platforms.

Plus as I said I have one and its not as bulky as made out!!!!! Its light and while it won't really fit in your pocket easily, it suits me because i drive a lot
I don't think its inferior to the zen or ipod, just different.

Sorry a bit of change of subject, but its still regarding the iRiver H140. I'm travelling around the world for the next 3 months and want to get it insured incase it gets stolen. Anyone know what insurance I can get, I doubt house insurance will cover this.

How heavy is the iHP-140 in reality? I saw it in Peats the other day (not that I'd buy there, it's just nice to see these things in the flesh) and it looked huge... even the remote looked huge.

It's a toss-up between the 140 and a Zen Touch at the moment so size/weight may very well be the deciding factor.
