    Here here lads...
Totally agree...you can pick up some cheap gems...but that's totally not the point that was being made.

I've been accused of being a guitar snob...well, I am...I've put enough time and money, effort, learning and knowledge into it that I am completely justified in being one.

I'd rather be a guitar snob with gear that plays to my stylistic strengths than be a 'suffer-for-my-music artíste' who's too stubborn and ignorant to accept the fact that my playing, no matter how good, wouldn't sound the same if I was hammering away at a Crafter moulded plasic back semi acoustic instead of my Lowden f10c.

Doctor J, you beat me to the punch, I was gonna make the same argument.
There are signature models for exactly this reason...the best players know what they want in a guitar, the little tweaks to a high quality instrument that matches they're style of playing...like the lack of f-holes on the Lucille, cause BB just wants feedback when he looks for it...

While you're making this argument for **** gear, why don't you also throw in some other classics, like:

No, drummers should take their timing from the lead guitarist.

The first thing you should learn on guitar is the riff from Smoke on the Water, and you should start off learning on an electric guitar, with a pleck. And forget about lessons, you don't need them.

My transistor amp sounds better than those valve yokes...they're a waste of money...

Pedals are for losers, if you're any good you don't need them...

I'm better than you...but keep practicing, you'll get there (generally the comment of a **** guitarist who feels he needs to prove to everyone how good he is...)

    I'm gonna stop now...

    :p

Heh he heh, exactly. I've been playing about 15 years now, I loved my first Aria Pro II bass, it was excellent for what it was. However, as I got better, I realised though it was good, it wasn't playing how I wanted it to play. So I picked up my ESP 400 Series (basically a 64 Fender Jazz replica) and wow, what an improvement. Much nicer tone, it reacted to how I played much better than the Aria Pro II. However, it too wasn't perfect. The ESP has the sweetest, most beautiful tone of any bass I've ever heard. I run it through amps with no EQ 'cos it doesn't need it. It also plays remarkably well, my guitarist says it plays like a guitar. But I noticed sometimes, it's just too clean, no matter how hard I play it. That's when I got the Ric. The Ric growls like an angry bear, it foookin rocks, but it's just too punchy for more mellow stuff, regardless how soft I play it. It's a remarkable piece of craftsmanship (the guys who made it signed it under the scratchplate :) )

I love both these instruments deeply and I play each one differently, they serve a different purpose. Sure, I could get away with one bass but why should I? When I need a heavy tone, I use the Ric, when it's all chilled out, the ESP is yer only man. Now I'm no Jaco Pastorius, but I'm decent enough (I played a gig standing in for a mate's band, learned the set Saturday afternoon, played the gig Saturday night, no problems). Does it mean I'm a crap player 'cos I can't (nor want to) stop the Ric sounding like a Ric? I'm a decent player, and I believe part of your playing skill is understanding instruments and tone, understanding amps, frequencies, the whole package. It's more than just hitting a string. Yes, I am proud to be an instrument snob, if there's a club I'll join it. If you enjoy sounding crap then good luck to you, but I like to do it well, by whatever means necessary. ;)

Can I join too? I won't play a guitar unless is has a Floyd Rose, EMG's or at least 24 frets.

And if Music123 ever sort out that f*cker who's got me 6 string, I'll have an Ibanez SoundGear 3006E 6 string bass soon too!

Have to agree with you there. I don't have a particularly deep knowledge of the technology but I know what I like. I personally have never and probably will never find the need to invest much in effects, pedals etc, but even sticking with a mere guitar and amp I can't see why I wouldn't buy better ones if I could afford it. I'm not saying I'd find it necessary to buy the most expensive in any given range (sadly I do have to worry about such minor things as food, drink, and the roof over my head:() but I certainly wouldn't choose to go for the cheapest model as a matter of principle.
My Squier Standard Tele is perfectly adequate for knocking out a tune, but offer me the real thing at a sensible price and I don't think I'd have much wrestling to do with my conscience.

i got it from musictoyz.com in the US with a load of other pedals. I managed to get the ds1 brand new for €20 from thier site thanks to some kind of error. actually for interesting effects and the like its a pretty good site. I would love the fulltone chorus/flanger pedal, all ive heard are good things.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I've heard really bad things about musictoyz.com Orders being "misplaced", emails not being replied to, money being taken from credit cards and no orders appearing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,567 ✭✭✭mloc

well to be honest i ordered from them while they were moving premises, and that caused a little trouble. i did have to ring them once or twice to get it sorted, but the stuff eventually arrived. and the best thing was for some reason i wasnt charged VAT or duty on the import. brilliant!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Cool. Just having a look at the site now. What are the shipping costs like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,567 ✭✭✭mloc

as far as i can remember they were reasonable, i ordered about 18 months ago. i ordered 4 pedals, it was about 40 dollars or so, but the ordered totalled around 420 so it wasnt taht much. the fulltone cost around 200 dollars, and they sent the other pedals first (e.g. in two deliveries = more expensive) because the fulltone wasnt in stock.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Hmm, definately some interesting stuff on that site. Not a great selection of guitars though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,567 ✭✭✭mloc

nope tis mostly just effects and stuff. for more kinda boutique-y effects, try tonepilot.com. i dunno if that one delivers to ireland tho.

tis interesting to see most folks have more than one kind of instrument... there's a lot more people who play drums as a second or third instrument than I would have guessed...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭The Smircher

I've just received an AKG WMS40GB from thomann.de

Very very nice piece of kit, can't wait to get on stage with it.

If you play with a band behind you or playing in a band, it's a huge benefit to be able to play, to some degree, all of the intsruments being used. Gives you a better feel for things...

Doc, I'm suprised by the number of would be drummers too...but having said that...they're so much bloody fun...
