Thank you kindly. I think it does matter and, as a result, I'll bring in some pics of my Ric bass tomorrow. It matters a lot. I know a lot of you guys like the new contemporary shaped instruments but, for me, you just can't beat the Ric. It sounds like an angry bear growling when played clean and creates a strong breeze when turned up a smidge. :D

Sorry 'bout the delay, they actually made me do some work!!!

Anyway, here we are. The real beauty of this bass is that it sounds better than it looks. It's the first bass I've ever had where I have to take low frequencies out of the amp :D

Some serious kit on here, DoctorJ's Rickenbacker takes the biscuit though, its beautiful.

    My babies:
Takamine G-series acoustic, usually with D'addario medium/lights. I've also got a nice Willie Nelson style hole in progress in it too :(

Fender Telecaster (Squier Series, but still bloody expensive !! Made in Mexico )
    Fender Delux 112 Plus amp
    Boss Distortion DS-1
    Boss Overdrive/Distortion OS-2
    Broken Flanger ...
    Black guitar leads ;)

Used to have a 12string good while ago, but traded it for the amp above, neck was starting to warp on it, lesson learnt to keep them dropped a step down.

Ibanez bass out the back somewhere, its in bad shape, along with my acoustic Hohner cost me £60 back in 1992, and its still good for a sessúin.

:D Bought a beee-yuu-tiful new acoustic yesterday in 'Perfect Pitch' in Dublin. It's a Mcilroy A30. Mcilroy used to one of the top dudes in Lowden for years and is now making incredible instruments. Wonderful tone and sustain, incredible woods (ebony, brazilian rosewood, sitka spruce, indian rosewood, pear, sycamore, walnut, mahogany ... ALL on this guitar!!!). The quality of production is awesome. Aesthetically, the sexiest guitar I've ever seen. Just put in his name in a google search and see some of the pics and reviews.

    I'm a happy little camper!!! :D:D:D:D

Nice one Feylya ... that's my little beauty alright ...Mcilroy A30! I'm sitting here looking at it across the room ... Sexy or what?? Tone that goes on forever. You get a 'birth cert' with each guitar signed by Dermot Mcilroy. Mine was completed on July 4th this year. Here's the materials list he gives for the guitar:

Back and sides: solid indian rosewood
    Top: solid sitka spruce
    Neck: 5 piece - mahogany/sycamore/rosewood/sycamore/mahogony
Fingerboard: Ebony with rosewood and sycamore binding
Edge bindings: pear with sycamore and rosewood purfling inlays
Rosette: Abalone with rosewood and sycamore purfling inlays
Headstock veneer (resting over the mahogony head): rosewood with sycamore purfling underlay
    Bridge: Brazilian rosewood
Strap button inlay: walnut with rosewood and sycamore
Heelcap: Pear with sycamore and rosewood purfling
Machine heads: Gold plated gotohs with amber pearloid buttons

    'Nuff said!

Was gonna buy a McIlroy myself, but back when I was buying, they were new and as yet relativley unproven live, then I found a Lowden f10c going cheap...never looked back.
    Beautiful guitars though.

I got a new baby too.

    A Gibson BB King Lucille

    bb-guitar.jpg

It's f*cking awesome. This is the Les Pauls older brother...more tricks up it's sleeve.

Now I have to flog my Blueshawk though... :(

Lovely machine Fitz. I used to own it's brother, the 335. Best guitar I ever owned. Unbelievable body and tone. Had to sell it cos the band I was in demanded an instrument with a little more overall flexibility. But the tone of the 335 (and Lucille presumably) was awesome. I used to play it through a Mesa Boogie Mark IV ... No FX ... straight through ... brilliant. Match made in heaven!!

    Guitars

    96' US Fender Deluxe Strat
2002 PRS McCarty Soon to be mine :)
    Front.JPG

    Sounds

Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier (100 Watt all tube amp)
Marshall MF 400 4x12 Mode Four cabs (400 watt)

    Pedal Board

    In this order

    Boss Tu-2 Tuner>Dod 40Eq>Boss V-10 Wah>Digitech TurboFlanger>Digitech Chorus>
    Boss DD-6 Delay>Ernie Ball 6160 Volume Pedal>Marshall Jackhammer Dis/Od pedal for when I can't use the amp!!!>Boss Ns-2 Noise Suppressor Pedal.

I've got the whole lot encased in a nicely made flight case. So its a breeze to set up I take the top off it!!! May seem like alot of pedals but I usualy make the most use out of the tuner wah and Delay!!!

    Thats may rig!!

Sweet...gotta love the 335...the Lucille has more bite in its tone than the 335, and more sustain. I can stand in front of my amp and play like I'm using an Ebow...it's amazin....
The lack of f holes beefs up the sound, moving it more towards the solidbody sound, while preserving that beautiful archtop quality.
That and the Varitone gives you huge variety of sounds.
Did I mention the stero out? (It's actually a customised 355 when you get down to it...)

6 string guitar(electric), acoustic, amp, pedals..

as i said, it doesn't matter wot u have.. any truely great musician can make any **** instrument sound better than any 'great' instrument

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 800 ✭✭✭dabhoys

Yes thats true. But lets face it. You play what you like. But I mean Michael Schumacher dosen't win the F1 driving a Lada. A good guitar players usually likes to have a instrument of equal quality. Granted there are some people who find 'the' instrument for them. Its a matter of opinion. I would consider myself an average guitar player. I've got a PRS McCarty and a US Deluxe Strat and there two fine instruments. They don't make me a better player. But there just nicer to play. If you have the choise Between Lada and a Ferrari, what would u choose. Regardless of skill.....

*typical justification of someone who's bitter about the fact that they aren't yet able to buy an expensive, quality instrument, and is trying to convince themselves that their gear sounds as good cause they can play well*

    Which is bull****.

An expensive guitar won't make a bad player sound good.
But it'll make a talented player sound better.

I've put a lot of effort into buying gear that compliments my playing style.
Anyone who discounts this as an element of being a good musician is either naive or stupid.

I agree totally with you there Fitz. But you must agree that on rare occasions you do find some cheep gems and some great guitar players play some really cheap guitars. Tom Morello would be the most famous. He guitars aren't worth very much. But your totaly right in what you said....

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yup, I agree with Fitz too. There are some lovely cheaper guitars out there. Yahama Pacifica and some Squire's (I can't remember if it's the standard series) are very good for the price. A little bit of hot rodding and you've got yourself an excellent, cheapish gigging guitar that doesn't matter if it gets damaged.

Crap, noisy pickups, unresponsive woods, unreliable tuners and shyte fretwork wouldn't make anyone sound good, no matter how much talent they may possess. That's such a lame arguement. A good musician is a good musician but crap gear does no-one any favours. A good musician will seek out the instrument which helps them best express what they're trying to convey. Whether that's a €150 Encore (unlikely) or a €4000 PRS, the musician and the instrument should compliment each other. Put a Rickenbacker in some doofus' hand and he'll still sound like a doofus, just a doofus with better tone. Put a Cort in a genius' hand and he'll still sound like a genius, just with crap tone. That's why Les Paul made a guitar! That's why Jaco played a Fender Jazz bass! That's why Clapton plays a strat! Why make it hard on yourself? It doesn't make you more of an "artist" it makes you a stubborn fool. Your instrument should help you make every kind of music you can conceive, easily and with a minimum of fuss.

By that logic, every drummer should use upturned pots and paint tins (see Metallica's new album :) ) every bassis shout use a tea-chest, a broom handle and a bit of twine. Man, get a grip. Just because you are self-conscious enough to think your friends will think you're a show-off cos you decided to buy a quality instrument, it doesn't mean you're not a soulful, real player. Is BB King without soul? He plays custom made Gibsons. Was kurt Cobain without soul? He played American made Fenders. Joey Santiago? Gibson Les Paul. Rory Gallagher? Damn, he had one of the very first strats ever to be imported into Ireland. Are these guys showoffs or do they lack artistic authenticity because they played quality instruments?

If you don't like how or what someone plays, don't blame the instrument. Blame the player. But a good player will always sound better on a good instrument. They play better, they respond better, they sound better. Would you drive a Model T because "that's real driving"? No, you like a car that stops the rain coming in. you like doors, you like an engine you don't have to get out and crank to start. It's the same with instruments. A better instrument will do what you want it to do.

:D Just thinking of Eric Clapton saying to the Fender Custom Shop guys "Could you do some crappy wiring and soldering on my new guitar, I want something that sounds crap, yeah, much more artistic, that." :D
